My static found it was easy to remember the toxic squall/ surge by saying "if it's surge we merge" for light party's and "for squall we spread to the wall". Rhyming makes it easy to remember!
Damn that was fast. My static is planning on using your guides for the whole tier after how well they worked for us in asphodelos. Keep up the good work Hector.
Hey guys! For Ruby Glow + Topaz Clusters, I found that my group was struggling finding the 3rd safe zone. If you blinked and missed the set of Crystals dropping down, quickly look for the quadrant with only 1 Quartz in it before for 4th set drops. I solved it this way much more consistently than trying to eye on drops.
Additional note on this one: Look where the 4th set drops. The safe spot of the 4th set indicates the safe spot of the 3rd set, as the 2 safe spots will always be diagonally opposite of each (eg South-West indicates a safe spot North-East)
I didn't think it possible but the quality of your guides is actually increasing. I love the attention to details, like the deliberate timing of the blue flashes indicating claw attacks. I've been watching streams of the world race and, unlike other guides I've watched and needed to be present in the fight to map concepts to execution, I can very easily map the concepts from your guides to the phases I need to execute on. Great job (and so quick!), you're amazing
For the zigzag pattern of aoe, you'll notice that the quadrant he first jumps to becomes safe after the third hit, so in the example you give, once he does the AOE at 2, you can move into 2, follow him to 1 and your safe to remain there while it resolves the rest of the mechanic
Although these guides aren’t “perfect” upon release, the quality of these guides for the first week have helped numerous parties clear. I thank you on behalf of the raid community Hector, your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.
i find his guides the easiest amongs all of them. the animation makes it clear to see where to go rather than the "live view" which is easily super confusing... way better and needs more attention
First time trying to clear current Savage and honestly Hector this guide (and the correction to Devour) is a literal godsent. Thank you. Aiming to clear this fight tomorrow, I reached Ruby Glow 5 today :)
This is my first time clearing a tier with everyone else blind as I only caught up with the game recently, it makes me really happy that my half assed party finder tactics are relatively similar to yours... And thanks for your hard work!
for devours I found that it's easier for the zig zag, to wait like you said at start, but then just chill in 1 marker corner, until last jump at which point you can just walk centre safely and so your soaks. for the circle pattern, yours is probably easier, but I've been doing it with waiting for 2nd jump to start, and you just run a straight line to the corner across, by the time you get there you can just turn around in same line and then 2 more pizza slices and you're practically on top of the pools ready to soak
I find Devour much easier this way: Clock pattern: Stand left of the first jump, move in afterwards, then follow it when it changes direction Zigzag pattern: Start opposite, when it lands to the right of you, run counter-clockwise to the first jump location and stay there
By "left of the first jump" I presume you mean CCW "left" from the start (between A&1) and not boss relative left (B&2). But that's basically the same thing to what Hector said, he just said it in a more complex way. They move into the first spot and then move CCW following the explosions.
You are the GOAT. Guide is fantastic and will be a huge help. One thing I've noticed for the zig-zag bite pattern is that you can stop running once you hit the pizza slice the boss started biting on. Makes for less opportunity for error I think. Either way though, you're so good at these guides!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE GUIDES. Ex "hardcore top 10 world" WoW player but my OG MMO was FF11 back in 2004 in college. So nice to "retire" on FF14 b/c I can still get my "kill something 'hard'" fix and this boss in PF first week did not dissapoint!.
Grats on day 1 clear! This has helped my group who can hopefully clear Thursday! I love your guides as they have helped me so much and your better at explaining these mechanics!
Great and easy to understand guide. Small improvement might be having a video of he fight after, maybe even sped up, with timestamps to the mechanics show.
i love your guides! the animations make it so much easier to understand the strategies than gameplay footage and i think its a nice compromise from going in blind and spoiling the spectacle of the fight :)
On Ruby Glow 5 spreads, please do not recommend tanks at the wall. There is by default 2 "uptime" spots on each side, one being max melee at the edge of poison. Having Tanks be in that spot makes the boss run over to whichever tank is currently holding it and messes up the melee range for both spots on the other side. So either you need to have both melee in the light party with the tank that currently is holding the boss or you put the Tanks in the center positions.
Thanks a bunch for the guide! I'm glad my blind pf actually figured out a bunch of the mechs on our own including arrangements for poison towers. It drives me wild that the day 1 pf strats encourage roles for pairs when all it does is cause massive confusion for the cardinal towers.
For the Devour - I find it a lot easier to think of this mechanic as of one single pattern (because it kinda is). You position yourself diagonally opposite of first jump and then you need to remember intercardinal at which boss changed direction - boss gonna start clockwise to do all his jumps and ALWAYS change direction at this "checkpoint". So he can change it either once (Circle pattern) or twice (Zigzag pattern) until he exhausted himself. The rest is easy - you follow his jumps and dodge each of them by standing on opposite intercardinal closer to center.
As always, the animation and perspective shift help so much more than PoV videos. I guess without them my static wouldn't have cleared Asphodelus at all. Maybe in the future, "Hector" will be something you read in PF descriptions a lot more :D
This is a great guide hector. But these encounters are just test of memory. And its too much exercise for whatever memory banks I have left. There was an age when I could instantly recall what I need. Those good days are long gone.
ffxiv raid in ARR used to be about adventure and battle, mechanics involving adds, aggro management, etc and over time it's moved more and more towards simon says / 8 man jump rope. now its 10+ minutes of musical chairs and memorisation
Even after watching this guide over and over I'm still far too nervous. I tried a learning party and got upset at making mistakes as a tank, I felt like I was letting the team down. Its a super helpful guide and you explain things in a nice way. I'm just upset I won't be able to do savage with my small brain.
I’m a Pf only player, I learned the fight in under 3 hours, still took me 20 hours to clear despite not making mistakes, because people legit screwed me over and over again. Just go for it, a bunch of people screw up as well, so, even if you do, you won’t have anything to feel bad about. Good luck!
One note for Squall/Surge that my static has found is that you don't need to stack center. You have the healers take their spread spot closer to the wall, then everyone waits to bait the aoe in the same spot, then move. So for Squall it's spread, stay to bait, then move in to stack. For Surge it's in to stack, stay stacked to bait, then spread. I've found that since this requires a lot less movement it's a little easier on healers too.
Hector you're an absolute live saver! I have ADHD and memorising sequences is something that's extremely hard for me. I've been wiping to Ruby Glow 3 and devour all night because I thought I had to memorise every single invididual aoe and was getting so overwhelmed. I watched your guide and after some practice, finally managed to survive both of those mechanics thanks to how you explain a much easier way to appraoch them. Eternally grateful for your fast and effective guides. Keep being awesome and I hope you enjoy the tier!
Something I noticed with the Devour mechanic is that you can also predict which way the initial jumps will happen based on which pizza slice of the quadrant the first jump will be. So if it is the upper left pizza slice of quadrant 1, then the boss will jump counter clockwise 2 or 4 times. Havent gotten past devour yet with the whole party alive but I believe that tomorrow will be different now that this guide is out :)
Maybe worth a mini-guide for Ruby Glow 3: You see that line that goes North/South that splits the floor? The first crystal to spawn on that line shows that the safe spot is the correct side (east/west) but opposite North/South. So if it spawns on that line in the NE quadrant, 3rd safe spot is SE, then NW. If it spawn on that line in the NW quadrant, 3rd safe spot is SW, then NE. etc.
For zig zag pattern, you don't even need to do extreme move after you get into sfae quadrant. You just need to hide in corner and move when you see last aoe. It has lot of time even without sprint to go to tower.
3:00 For towers, what my group does is every person runs to their assigned puddle based on their clock position. If your position does not start glowing green, you go to your partners. holy shit this will help my brain remember so much better ty
Lol I go by:
“Surge together”
And
“Squall-lone” cuz Y’know. Squall’s a loner…. 🙃
I’ll see myself out
I memorized it by knowing Squall starts alone in FF8, and then gets together with the party.
@@elduardo2496 I gave my static the strat that "Squall spreads for Seifer"
i do that too!!! Squall to the Wall!!
Get home from work and this guy's got the raid guides already up

For towers, we found it much easier to say 2 people go to the highest of the options (numerically/alphebetically), and 2 go to the lower.
You're doing Hydalyns work, keep up the good work!
Day 1 guide btw. Incredible and clean!
One note for Squall/Surge that my static has found is that you don't need to stack center. You have the healers take their spread spot closer to the wall, then everyone waits to bait the aoe in the same spot, then move. So for Squall it's spread, stay to bait, then move in to stack. 2cw/5ccw or reversed is such a wildly simple rule to resolve devour, absolutely fantastic.
