  • Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK government as part of its response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The 55-year-old Russian oligarch is alleged to have strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he has denied.
His attempt to sell Chelsea has been halted by the UK government following the sanctions.
Chelsea FC cannot sell any more tickets for games, its merchandise shop will be closed, and it will be unable to buy or sell players on the transfer market.
The UK government said Mr Abramovich, who has an estimated net worth of £9.4bn, is "one of the few oligarchs from the 1990s to maintain prominence under Putin".

I am a man utd fan. I am wondering how this is legal. Roman is Chelseas club owner who happens to be Russian. Whether he has ties with Putin does not mean he is in agreement with his actions. UK and US have not Sanctioned Israel and they have been bombing the Palestinians for over 40 years. Neither have they sanctioned Saudi Arabia for their atrocities.
Football is a sport and has no business in the game of politics. Like everyone i am sure i feel for the people of Ukraine and hope the war on them comes to a swift end.
Financially this may hurt Roman but it is not about finance. It is clear that the man loves the club otherwise it would have passed hands years ago. Has the UK thought about the impact of the staff and players? There is so much hypocrisy in politics! Who supplied weapons to Saddam Hussein and then branded him a tyrant?! Sanctions are aimed at Putin and quite rightly so, but then Israel should face sanctions for the bombardment of the Palestinians for over 40 years. Palestine has been there since Biblical times Israel was created in 1946. You should not chose who you sanction when wrong is wrong. The treatment of Roman is a poor judgement on the part of the UK. Britain has never condemned Saudia Arabia because they have a good relationship with the King. Roman is not obliged to say anything he can remain silent on things like the UK has for many years

This is ridiculous, Roman hasn’t taken a profit from Chelsea for years and is willing to forfeit the 1.5 billion dollar loan.
Not allowing the sale of tickets only affects jobs for vulnerable people living in the uk who work at the stadium and fans of the club who have nothing to do with this war.
By all means sanction and banish Roman, but don’t punish the fans and staff who have mortgages to pay and families to feed. Uk government is reacting to quickly and haven’t thought this through at all.

Chelsea fans must realise that Abramovich has put Chelsea in a vulnerable situation with the £1.5bn debt as it could cause Chelsea to go into administration as Chelsea have the most debt in the Premier League. Abramovich did this 10yrs ago & that's when fans should have boycotted him & raised concerns because now it's up in the air & you have to hope Chelsea is sold to a really rich man, the debt is cleared & Chelsea aren't deducted points.

As before, apart from the lawyers, bankers and beneficiaries nobody knows the true value of profits generated.
And, where these profits are spent and by whom.
Or of course whether any tax is being paid on aforementioned profits.

I would suggest "chasing the money" was begun well before the issue in Ukraine and said issue has merely accelerated the process.
And, before that, UK had passed legislation ref the proceeds of crime.

This is not a bank account or real estate. It’s a club. It involves people. Thousands of people directly earn from this club. Hundreds of thousands of people are supported by charity works through Chelsea. Millions of people are bounded emotionally with the club. The club pays almost 150 million pounds tax to UK government. Chelsea FC are the most generous of the current Premier League football clubs in terms of spending through their charitable foundations. Chelsea Foundation works on a broad range of initiatives focusing on employment, education, social deprivation, crime reduction, youth offending and much more. You can go do a fact check.
You want to cut the financial aid to Russia? Sanction Roman, fine. But let him sell the club to somebody who can run it professionally. Let the transactions happen only through British banks. Freeze the account. Now it’s sanctioned mid way neither he can sell it nor he can run it. What is the purpose here? Screwing up a football club and its people or sanctioning Russia? If it’s only about Russia, all it takes bit of an effort to respect the millions of people behind Chelsea who have nothing to do with Putin.

@@siddharthvignesh There are a lot of comments from football fans complaining about what's happening, and each one tries to paint a view of caring about 'the bigger picture'... but if there's one thing they almost always have in common, it is the notion of 'don't punish the fans'... I doubt there would be so much passion thrown into such comments if Roman was head of Wimbledon, or some other non-football sport event. Cliche or not, there are more important things in this world than football. I doubt the Ukranians give a flying fk whether Chelsea gets to play next week.

As I understand it (I hope I’m wrong) there is a huge amount of property in London that nobody knows who the beneficial owners are. This “hiding” of owners identity is achieved by using offshore companies and/or a complicated trail of ownerships.
I WOULD SUGGEST THAT A LAW BE PASSED THAT ACTUAL OWNERSHIP OF ALL PROPERTY BE VISIBLE ON A SIMPLE SEARCH AND THAT ANY PROPERTIES WHERE THE OWNERSHIPS CANNOT BE VERIFIED BE FROZEN AND SIEZED AS PART OF A BID TO CRACKDOWN ON THE OLIGARCHS AND MONEY LAUNDERING OUTFITS. IF PEOPLE CAN PROVE THEIR OWNERSHIPS THEN GENUINE OWNERS WONT HAVE DIFFICULTIES COMING FORWARD.
People, where the origins of the Money is questionable will of course be outraged and fight tooth and nail against this suggestion. We live in extraordinary times so extraordinary measures are called for.
    Stay safe everyone.

You suggesting that there should be even more legislation against people (and even more power in the hands of purported authorities) is exactly what will accelerate the destruction of society as we knew it.
My suggestion to you is that you think very carefully about what you wish for as that may be just the very thin of the wedge.

It is because of this respect for private property that it is being frozen and not just taken and then maybe sold to help pay for the Ukraine war effort or to help Ukraine citizens.
