Fabric Covering a Rudder with Superflite

  • I received a rudder that had been previously covered and was asked if I could fix it. Here is a time-lapse video of the steps I take to cover (or re-cover) tail feathers. This piece is from an excalibur ultralight kit and I'm using Superflite products to cover it.
    I've worked on dozens of planes and been asked many times to make videos showing my processes, tips and tricks. I'll be uploading more videos periodically as I complete more projects.

    A specialist indeed. Watched a video where she covers the fuselage of a SuperStol. The precision is impressive. Wish I could do that,

      What did you decide on? SS I'm guessing. I'm very close to covering my fly baby 1B biplane build and have been looking into all the systems. Thanks for your help

    Why did you switch to the yellow iron vs the model iron? Also why do this in two pieces as opposed to the one piece wrap method? Thanks love your videos!

    Is Siperflite the same as Diatex or similar? And what is the adhesive you used for the job. It looks very good.

    Hear are a few questions...
    1. What U500 to Acetone ratio are you using?
    2, Are you changing the ratio at different stages of the application?
    3, How many coats and what ratio of thinned U500 are you putting down under the finishing tapes?
    Over the finishing tapes?
    4. Any tips on applying the finishing tapes and getting that smooth green appearance instead of the green with mottled white sections?
    Your videos are great and have been a big help our project. Sure glad I can slow them down with TH-cam and pick up all the details.

    Approximately how many hours did it take you to do that rudder? Great job!

    • @iapplyufly
      @iapplyufly  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This one was easy, no stitching, minimal taping. Maybe half a day.

    wow nice job, but after so many coats didn't it got over weight? are u using butyrate dope? is nice anyways

    • @iapplyufly
      @iapplyufly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve thinned the glue with acetone for multiple coats so much of the weight is lost through evaporation. The materials used on this piece are by Superflite and are lighter than the older ‘dope and fabric’ systems.

    Hi. Please tell me name off the yellow iron and small clips, and where I can purchase. Thanks

    • @iapplyufly
      @iapplyufly  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Stephen! The iron is a Toko T14. You can find them on various sites including ebay. I bought my small multicolored clamps from Harbor Freight.

    And the reinforcing tape?

    • @iapplyufly
      @iapplyufly  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This specific kit did not call for rivets or lacing on the tail so no reinforcing tape was needed.

    • @IvonatorBG
      @IvonatorBG 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thank you! I am a student! Another question please, don't you use some kind of fill coat and finish coat?

    • @iapplyufly
      @iapplyufly  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this system requires multiple coats of primer and paint after covering.

    Looks extremely time consuming and labor intensive, and this is just for a rudder. I need a simpler way, because this would piss me off 10 minutes in as soon as shit was sticking to things it wasn't suppose to be sticking to.

    I don’t know what I did to the algorithm but TH-cam is feeding me vids of very talented females that are working in the aviation mechanical world. Lol they are actually a lot better than the men’s vids🤣🤣🤣 I grew up around drag racing and girls make better mechanics because they have small hands and pay attention to detail !! They also have faster reflexes and make better drivers too🤣 the truth hurts😳💪🏼🗽

  • @choppergirl

    I don't want all that gunk and crap on my nice aluminum plus omg, way too time consuming and labor intensive. If you're going to do all that, you might as well cover it in fiberglass.
