I live at Tahoe, and have skied at Heavenly for years. Thank you for giving credit and thanks for our local patrolers, who are seriously underpaid, and mostly work the job for those they serve. I know that feeling; 39 years as a high school teacher. I think your patroler was probably Morgan Grose.

Being a patroller, I say thank you for giving credit to the patroller who treated you and got you off the mountain. PPl don't understand the amount of training we get to treat seriously injured skiers. Glad you're doing well.

Truly gut-wrenching story! So glad she got through it. She always came across as sweet and likeable and not just a pretty face. That came across loud and clear and she showed real courage reliving that story and her gratitude to ALL the people who helped her. She is truly beautiful inside and out.
Side-note: Her story was hard for me to view/listen to because I was in a horrific accident when I was a child and lost part of my foot. Because of that, any foot or leg injury stories or images are still hard for me to endure to this day. But she told it so well and in such a heart-felt way that I didn't get squeamish at all which clearly tells me that she has a rare gift of storytelling. In fact, I would encourage her to do more long-form stories like this once she is up to it. Journalism is truly her calling.
    Get better soon Luz!

Glad you are okay and are on the road to recovery. I think many Bay Area skiers and snowboarders, especially beginners. could benefit from a follow up piece going over your decision making on the day. Based on your brief video you look like a beginner skier (less than 10 days maybe).
How did you decide to do an upper mountain intermediate run rather than a beginner run? (Peer pressure from the group?)
How did you lose control to go off of the trail? Or were you trying to tree ski?
How did you go fast enough to sustain that injury? (I'd assume you were going 30 mph+)
Did you have any background on tree well safety or avalanche safety? (General mountain safety)
What inhibited your ability to stop?
All the best in your recovery.

Hamed, even very experienced skiers can make mistakes that end badly. The late Sonny Bono was an expert skier but made one little mistake that cost him his life. Luz already mentioned that she doesn't mention anything from the accident so there's no way she would be able to answer most of your questions. There are no beginner runs from the top of Heavenly on either side of the mountain and frankly I think that your assessment of her skiing ability is nowhere near accurate. She is clearly making linked parallel turns quickly in part of the video so she's definitely not a beginner.

    • @hbeytollah
      @hbeytollah ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@kgsails7102 The piece covers all the decisions after the accident, which are important. My point is that decisions made before the accident are equally as important, and covering them would help many beginner skiers/riders.

Skiing can be very dangerous for those who are beginner->intermediate, and those who are advanced->extreme. If you know how to ski well, there's absolutely no way you accidentally hit a tree at Heavenly. That is the truth. But, if you know how to ski very well, and take bigger risks, you absolutely can hit a tree. I'm guessing this lucky lady was in the beginner->intermediate phase where she could get enough speed to hurt herself (not a learner on the bunny hill), but didn't have the skill to scout, avoid, or stop in time to hit a tree.

As a snowboarder that spends a lot of time in the park, especially big jumps, I don't get the culture around not wearing a helmet. Coming from the skateboarding world where I don't wear a helmet (it's heavy and throws off your balance), it's nothing a like. More obstacles like trees, and most importantly, you can't just kick the board away. You catch a back edge, and it's hard to not hit your head if your going even a decent speed. I've landed upside down on my head on jumps before and road away with a minor concussion. Please get a mips helmet. If you really want to push yourself in the park, or are a beginner, it can and probably will save you at some point from more damage.

I'd say stay away from the trees until you are at least intermediate level because maneuvering should be second nature before assuming the risk of being off piste.
Ironically I got tree welled sledding in my backyard 2 weeks after the above incident. Was clowning around on a sled run we had prepared..the snow got super fast and I shot out of the run and bam into a well. I was essentially standing vertically in the well facing the tree. He hiked back up and found me upside down in a tree well and my legs were twisted under each other so there is no way I would ever have been able to save myself…. It took him a very long time to dig enough so he could get me out and ski patrol came and helped… I was very lucky I didn’t suffocate in the snow, didn’t break anything but I did break 3 ribs and all these years later they still bother me! Those Tree wells are sooo dangerous…

I made it to 5 minutes and 42 seconds before tears started flowing. Thank you for sharing. I am glad you are safe and that you were truly surrounded by angels that day and I will pray for your fast recovery Ms. Pena 🙏. Reno-Tahoe is home to us before we moved here in South Africa and as an OT who worked in SNF and outpatient setting, I have seen so many patients of Dr. Althausen before and he is truly a good doctor. I had to pause the video so I can type my comments. Now let the tears flow again.
Update: the last few minutes of the video actually made me laugh and smile. I am so glad you are are doing okay 🙏

Skiing is extremely dangerous. You can walk out in the snow, but if you decide to go down a mountain very quickly on blades, you can’t exactly stop this can happen.

At Shasta, many moons ago, first time on skis......flying down the hill while some fella was yelling "hot-dogger!" NOPE, I had no clue how to stop. Scared the daylights out of me. I learned how to slow and stop after that.

Glad she is OK. I started to wear a helmet 25 years ago when I went skiing. I would say back then only 1/4 of the skiers were wearing helmets now most everyone wears a helmet. I can’t believe when I was skiing in the 70’s no one was wearing helmets. I even ski raced with no helmet. That was just so crazy and stupid.
