    Good video but I would much rather have a Netgate 6100 running Pfsense for half the cost and no licensing payments. Thank you for the video! Always love to see firewall stuff.

    I wish they had more budget options for home guys like me trying to gain some experience. $1100 is a serious chunk of change for a firewall to use in a lab environment not to mention that license is probably yearly...

      Hi, there are a few options when wanting to try Palo Alto, they offer a trial VM-Series which is valid for 30 Days, and both the cloud firewall and the NGFW for Azure are available as pay-as-you go, it is a shame that they don't try and make hands-on practice more accessible.

    Can you recommend a vendor to buy the lab unit and license from? Palo Alto doesn't seem to make that part easy. Any help or guidance is appreciated. 🙏🏽

      Hi Keith, I found this Exo secure provider that sells Palo Alto solutions to natural persons, they have the entire pa-400 series and offer license renewal, but I don't know how reliable it is to make a purchase with them.

    Pricing isn't bad at all. I've looked at Fortinet as well, but I'll be comparing the two now that I know the pricing. Currently using OPNsense.

    Didn't even see the video yet, but I agree 110%. Too bad it's hard to buy one as most PA partners will not sell to you, especially without a VAT (but some rare ones do).
    To expand a bit, PA is, if not the best, in the top two enterprise firewalls and work great. I manage a whole lot of them at work and compared to anything else I worked on, it's so much better
    Regarding the 400 series tho, it is a shame that with lot of home internet services (and smb lines too) going in the multi-gig speed (at least here) the lack of sfp+ or multi-gig ports is a bit of a shame. 800 series would be better but the price spikes if you go there, even for lab units last I checked.

      I was just replying to a vendor that refused to sell me one unless I had an established BUSINESS account. Not sure how the OP managed this unless he is a reseller himself.

    • @tbard
      @tbard ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zapphoddbubbahbrox5681 If you don't have a business it really depends on the vendor. Usually they don't, but some do. Really helps a lot if you're an employee working in IT in a company that is their client or if you've got a job that could give them good publicity or possible sales. Stuff like Security Engineer, Network Administrator sometimes is enough. If it's anything like CISO, IT Manager or such and you ask for a lab license they will 110% sell it to you if you're unlucky, just give one free if not. Source: Way back when, I used to be an ""IT Manager"" at a SMB, got a PA220 and a Fortigate 200E for free in that period.

    PaloAlto considers as HighEnd solution in firewall world, but it's too expensive for home usage as home user firewall. Not hardware, software and licensing is expensive part of this trip.

    • @EZ-lj3hv
      @EZ-lj3hv ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, at almost 2000 USD the 440 or about 1000 for the 410, a bit stiff for home. A Netgate 2100 for example, is much more appropriate.

    Beside the price, Palo Alto boot times are horrendous, they sometimes hang, and also during configurations. Open source is starting to become popular, but for me, they also have their downsides. Being an older, impatient guy, I don't want to have to manually incorporate third party IDS/IPS software within a firewall. I want rapid, and smooth sailing with my configurations, and experience at least, IDS incorporations within the firewall, whether physically or virtually. Because of this, my choice is Fortinet.

    • @VirtualizationHowto
      @VirtualizationHowto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph, i agree the Palo's have horrendous boot and other times. I do however feel they are top notch from a security perspective however and why I really love them.

      @@VirtualizationHowtoOffcourse PA is incredible but its enterprise stuff. As long as you’re not some Bill Gates, Elon Musk or any other public person who often are targets of some serious hackers attempts, you dont need that lvl of protection at your home. Its your „inner geek” who buys this stuff. But taggin it as „home” gear is a big overuse. Ubiquiti, Mikrotik, some lower Fortinet, used/refubrished cisco, Aruba etc. - thats the stuff which homeusers and homelabbers mostly use and interested about.
      All i can say that as some ordinary watcher when i see some reviews about „out of my league” stuff i usually just skip them and ignore the channel in future searches. Only because my curiosity rised now, ive just looked at your channel and saw that you also do some really nice videos about other things arround proxmox and other stuff im interested about so i’ll check them out. But yet, normally i would ignore the channel :)

    Cable ISP's provide >1Gbps service these days and motherboards ship with 2.5GbE, so it's a big fat NOPE if it doesn't have 2.5 or 10GbE ports.

    $1600 for a box that no one can really buy unless they find a PA partner that will sell to you. Nah. I'm good with a Protectli running Untangle.

    • @VirtualizationHowto
      @VirtualizationHowto  ปีที่แล้ว

      iball, thank you for the comment! It is fairly easy to find online resellers that will sell individuals the lab units. I bought mine for $795 USD, so not $1600. However, I am not sure if you are US? Also, i really like Untangle and support a few production instances, but I am a bit unsure of the direction of the product since the Arista buyout. Time will tell.

      @thbadmin7751, thank you for your comment! I know better is relative for most. I know netgate and pfSense are great solutions and that is probably what I would be running in the home lab if I wasn't already invested in PA. I do honestly think PA has the best security out of all the vendors out there at this time and is why I run one...even if it isn't the cheapest.
