As a trans woman who grew up in the 90s, it can be hard to crush that internalized transphobia too. We appreciate all that our cis allies can do! These lyrics from "Fortunate Sun" really speak to me about the imperfect nature of progress:
"I’ve done a lot of violence to people in my space
Been a solipsist, been misogynist, been a fake
Been an insecure asshole and immature blank
Been broke, broke boundaries, and been a thin mate
Been a rich kid talking over people who ain’t
I been a simp, played the fool to a king of the snakes
I been a goddamn tool of the systems in place
But I’m not gonna give up and break
Listen - I’m not a good person cause I’ve never caused a hurt
And I’ve never had to force myself to change
I’m a good person cause I work and I work and I work and I work
      To find a better way
So I will die trying to make this dark world a little brighter
I will build, I will fight, I will pray
I will walk, I will knock, I will write, I will love, I will hate, I will hope

@@sandwichbreath0 I don't disagree with statements like "females have periods." It's not something I worry about. However ... if someone said "people have periods" it's also accurate. I'm not for policing language in any way. The truth is, if you're trying ot only include people who have periods in your statement ... there is nothing better than "people with periods." Not all women have periods, even including cis women. They could have been through menopause, as the common example. You're going to have to get really specific to say which group has it and which doesn't ... which I would agree isn't always needed.
However, if someone wants to say "people with periods face xyz" I don't see anything wrong with that. If someone wants to say "women with periods face xyz" I also don't see a problem with that. People arguing that language should be policed are people I don't understand, no matter which direction they're arguing for. As I pointed out in this comment, people arguing that we should be using women or female come across as thinking women aren't people. On the other side, it comes across as being pedantic at best and minimizing struggles others face at worst. Neither is ideal. So just ... let people speak how they want? Like that's the best solution imo.

@@connorh6718 What I don't understand is why they are so mad that someone else is using an expression to indicate something accurate that they personally don't like. You don't like it, don't use it... But be aware that what you saying is either factually wrong or inaccurate.
"Females have periods" is not correct, since the term females include all animals, including those that do not have periods.
"Human females have periods" is still biologically ambiguous and a false generalization.
"Some members of the Homo Sapiens Sapiens species that are biologically female have periods" is once again a false generalization and medically non complete.
"Some members of the Homo Sapiens Sapiens species that are biologically female and/or with DSD (intersex people), regardless of their gender identity, can have periods in some parts of their lifes" would be the best option...
Why are we not using that? Because it is effing ridiculous.
"People with periods" is a way to not sound like an effing clown.
In my language (Italian), which is extremely trans-erasing to begin with since we do not have a gender neutral terminology, we anyway manage to use this expression because it is correct; which leads me to believe that it is not just a problem with transgender people, they are simply ignorant.

I mean I understand what you mean. But by saying women have periods you’re (sometimes unknowingly) invalidating trans mens (ftm) experience as people with periods.
It also invalidates people who are bioligically women but do not identify as women (genderfluid, NB, etc..)
To include everyone who doesn’t identify as a woman, people with periods is the best option. By saying that we don’t mean women aren’t people, we are saying that beside people who identify as women can also have their periods.
I hope I’m not too harsh sounding (english is not my first language).

My native language, Finnish, does not have gendered pronouns. Every person in third person singular is simply "hän". In my opinion it makes everything so much smoother. You can't misgender anyone by using a pronoun, intentionally or unintentionally. Add to it that we also generally go by first names and when we use last names, using titles like Mr/Ms/Mx is very rare. When I'm speaking Finnish, I don't need to know a person's gender to address them or talk about them in third person. I think it creates a bit of a linguistic safe space for everyone - not just enby and trans people, but also cis people (including the silly ones who throw a hissy fit when they get requested to use certain pronouns).
The world does change, constantly. That's what makes some of these silly people so uncomfortable.

In Germany, we recently had a particularly infuriating incident in the parliament regarding trans women members. We have two now, since last year. Now a popular politician from the conservative/right-wing/bigotry party that emerged during the "refugee crisis" held a speech in parliament just attacking her, using her birth name and invalidating her identity. No political issue attached, just a personal attack for the other member's identity. Luckily, almost all other politicians stood against that. This type of transphobia is so wild, arguments like "she shouldn't be here on a women's quota" are coming from people who represent parties that don't have a women's quota in the first place. In fact, I think the Green party, who are the most socially progressive, are the only ones to have a fifty/fifty gender ratio set and the only ones who have trans people in parliament, so I think that's a pretty ridiculous line of thought even within TERF-logic.

      Basically :
      - Create a narrative that is possible but rare
      - Base it upon people's trauma
      - Extrapolate that because it is a minority, utilitarian measure is best (since there is a possibility that cis-women may be affected, and since radical female supremacists and traditional gender-rolers both know people supporting them care about cis-women's safety a great deal for different reasons), even if data doesn't support it being a huge deal at the time and it creates other problems.
      - Go back to enforcing sex=gender and rigid segregation of the two.
I hope we can move past this.

It's a tactic. People villainize things they don't understand and the reason it's seen as an issue now compared to before is because people are realizing that it's not ok to bully, harrass, and abuse people for living differently. So transphobes are throwing a tantrum that their transphobia is being called out and they're being held accountable so in an attempt to cover up that they're the problem they go 'oh, but look at these people we deem weak that need protection, these other people are a threat to them' when they really aren't and it's all smoke and mirrors to try and distract from the fact they're mad they're not getting away with their shittiness anymore. Internalized factors, mostly, including reflexive shame. In men especially, any sort of feeling that they are less than 200% straight, even if rationally the trans woman in questions is so feminine attraction to her could never be seen as less than straight, feels like an attack on their identity and they lash out.
I see trans women as women so if I am already attracted to one, great, doesn't matter. If by someone else's metric that makes me more bisexual than straight, why would I care anyway? As if that'd make me a lacking human being somehow.

I like to point out that cis people also get gender affirming medical care and cosmetic procedures all the time. There's lots of cis people who get breast/penis implants, or electrolysis, or hormone supplements, or a ton of other things that aren't medically necessary for their physical health. Why do transphobes think it's okay for them to "go against nature" to feel better about the shape and perception of their bodies, but it's not okay for trans people to do what amounts to the exact same thing, for the exact same reason, just because someone else made the wrong guess about the meaning of their genitalia as an infant? Like... it's an absolutely bizarre argument to make.

    • @ambientjohnny
      @ambientjohnny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What "wrong guess" is made about the sex of infants? If you say sex and gender are separate then why do you lot keep confusing the two? You say one can be whatever gender regardless of sex, so why is it always being brought up that someone was "mislabelled" at birth when sex shouldn't have any bearing on gender? All trans women, are without exception of the male sex.
What people are going round demanding that breast implants or penis implants are a matter of life and death and a human right? You're being very disingenuous about that point. Further, no one getting those cosmetic surgeries is claiming the surgeries should see them categorised differently by law as a consequence, another thing you "forgot".

      @toothfairy10133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

@@ambientjohnny "What "wrong guess" is made about the sex of infants?" firstly, they said about the *meaning* of thier genitalia. nobody's saying that they were wrong about the child's sex, or that trans women aren't of the male sex, just that they were wrong about what that meant for their gender. the commenter didnt confuse the two lol, either you misread their comment or you deliberately misinterpreted what they were saying. at birth, we were labelled with a gender and a sex at the same time, which i know you know.
secondly, gender affirming healthcare is actually life-and-death for a lot of people. dysphoria is awful, and it can drive people to suicide. that's because it can cause a whole lotta side things, insecurities, social anxiety, depression, etc. people have died over this. so yeah, it's life and death. but even ignoring all that, the commenter didn't forget anything. they weren't talking about the catergorization of trans surgeries, they were talking about cis people's reactions to them. things like "you're mutilating your body!" get thrown around a lot, and that's what they were defending against, that's the part that's comparable to cosmetic surgeries, which is pretty obvious from the fact that they were talking about transphobes saying 'going against nature' instead of 'trans agender'. you're arguing in bad faith, and it's obvious to anyone who actually knows about this stuff.

To be fair, it is rather complex when you get down to it. Since not even sex is a binary but rather a spectrum. Like, there are AFAB who are biologically male and AMAB who are biologically female.
PCOS is a very common condition in people who have ovaries, one symptom is overproduction of testosterone. Causing a host of additional issues that usually correlates more to men than women. Then you have the additional issue of gender expectations and rigid gender roles that is nothing more than social constructs yet are treated as biological. Despite proof otherwise.
There's a reason why gender studies exist.

The most widely spoken first language in the world today, Mandarin, does not have gendered pronouns in its spoken form (although they were introduced to written Chinese in the early 20th century, to make the language appear more modern and European). These languages have a single word that can mean ‘he’ or ‘she’ (or ‘he’ or ‘she’ or ‘it’, or even ‘he’ or ‘she’ or ‘it’ or ‘they’); as usual with pronouns, you need context to know what the pronoun refers to. Without gender to guide you, sometimes you need a little more context than you would in a more gendered language.

He was baptised 3 Times as a man and married twice to the same woman. His preffered name was Anastasius (the newborn) Lagrantinus Rosenstengel (Rosen = Rose = Vagina and stengel = stem = penis). He had an selfmade standapee Packer and a selfmade Strapon.

my native language refers to a person, regardless of their gender, using a gender neutral pronoun, which counts as "they" in english. to add to that, there are different words for what counts as singular and plural "they", so transphobes can't say, "they is only plural!" when talking about said language. :>

Unfortunately there are lots of places in the world where trans men are still placed in female jail/prison and vice versa. I fell victim to this a few years ago and was placed in the female inmate population as a trans man. During this time I was forced to only shower during times when the entire female inmate population was locked in their cells. Forcing me to do a "walk of shame" every time I just wanted to shower. Everyone would holler at me from their cells as I showered. There were lots of other acts of discrimination in there. There must be reform of our jails, prisons, and our society as a whole.

In 2013 I had a psychology 1010 course, my professor spent more than one day on the topic of the differences between transvestite and transgender. He told us that many people tend to think the two as the same, which of course they are not. He went into the psychological and biological reason on how people end up being born with an XX chromosome but are mentally men and vice versa. He was in his 60's during my time in his classes, I am pretty certain he's in his 70's now, and didn't question what science told him. Granted he's an expert in his field, so it would only make sense that he would think people would sound like idiots when they act as they so boldly do now on the internet. I wouldn't doubt that he's now retired, since I intend to go back once I do some things about what the school is claiming I owe them (I had grants and scholarships). Then 2020 hit, thus pushing me to be out of school for nearly five years.

Social transitioning is so difficult when those you're living with either don't want to accept you and so they just ignore your name a pronouns and keep calling you your old stuff or you've got someone constantly telling you just how weird and wrong you are. I have both of these. I'm stuck living with family who just doesn't get it. Though, my mother is trying. Its just... How do you go from looking your child in the face and telling them they need to do what makes them happy and then still call them by the pronouns that make them feel trapped? It makes no sense.

I mean except for pronouns english is a very gender neutral language, in italian (my native langauge) EVERYTHING is gendered. The chair? Female. The table? Male. The window? Female, and so on... it's a nightmare and also really stupid, objects don't have a gender. I wish we could change the language and make it more gender neutral. Some attempts have been made but there's been an uproar by people who want to "preserve the language", as if languages don't constantly change anyway.

Me, I like Japanese. There's 4 commonly used versions of how to say "I", with 2 weird outlier versions that I honestly only hear used for anime villains and demons, and 5 ways to say "you," and all words that mean "that person over there" are the same for men and women. The "I" and "you" pronouns are only "gendered" in that there are societal mores that incline women to use certain ones, but even that is more "this is more polite" rather than it being "this is the women's way to say 'I', and only women can use it." Also, of course, the most rough, rude ways to say "you" in Japanese can range from "you" to "hey, jerk!" to "You a-hole!" just based on how aggressively you say it...convenient, that.

    • @Struudeli
      @Struudeli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Mokiefraggle In Japanese most yous are not used for anyone else than family, friends, or subordinates. It's interesting.
Finnish would sound rude to many people as we don't have basically any of these kind of rules. Everyone is "it" from babies to presidents and even our formal way of talking just changes the yous into prular ("te" instead of "sinä", which is just multiple of "you") and basically nothing else.
Finnish is one of the hardest languages in the world, but still has some things very simple.

@@krimsonkatt I should have said Fantastic Beasts. There's a 3rd Fantastic Beasts film coming out next month. True, it does amplify their silliness, but I just don't like them using images of people that are explicitly opposed to their ideas. It reminds me of incels and the like using the term 'red pilled' then getting told to f' off by the Wachowskis. Sure it's funny seeing them called out, but it annoys me that they need to be, y'know? They can have their Jesus K Rowling (I'll leave that for a Christian to call out), but as a Wonder Woman fan I feel the need to point out they don't have Lynda Carter on their side! ;)
