    Gotta love the AC hum from those old transmitters. Tells you they are alive! I know these tube-and-iron monsters had their own personalities and they ran great when they behaved, and could give you all kinds of trouble when they misbehaved.

    That's a very good question and I don't have a precise answer for that, but it's a lot more than 500KW. The tube transmitters in this video wasted lots of energy just to light each tube, The new solid state shortwave transmitters running up to 2 million watts, only in other countries, are a lot more efficient.
    One engineer of a 50,000 watt station told me that when they replaced their tube transmitter with solid state, the electric bill dropped from $9000/month to $1000/month.

      Not a huge marvel considering that many transmitters ran Class C on the finals which made the efficiency from about 50% to 70%!

    I think that is a reason why there are less and less radio stations that I receive on Short Waves.

    Damn; I remember the 1st time i picked up VOICE OF AMERICA power house; i was very happy to hear it everytime on a Hollcrafters short wave radio given to me back in 1974; it was always a joy to hear VOA and WWV THE ATOMIC CLOCK. yes it was a very joyful; you could always get news around the world at least 1Day ahead of regular ABC news HOWARD K SMITH, MORLEY SAFER, DAN RATHER and the whole gang. I remember listening to a station i believe it was either RADIO NETHERLANDS or a station in INDIA . India announced they had lit of their 1st ATOMIC BOMB IN iNDiA WHAT A DAY THAT WAS!. and then to only hear it 1Day after the fact on channel 7 ABC in San Franicsco and also national news

    Older transmitters were about about 50% efficient so 1 Megawatt! And you had to get rid of 500KW of waste heat so there was lots of forced air / water / oil cooling going on. Modern digital switching methods improve the efficiency towards 100% but you still need 500KW.

    There are several videos on youtube showing the explosion and the dismantling of several short wave towers, being attributed to Voice of America, what hoube? In fact dismantled several stations? Have you dominated your antenna park? Where are the VOA antennas installed today?

    That's very interesting. I was especially impressed with the pulse step modulation used in that transmitter. I was stationed in Udon Thani in 1972-1973 in the Air Force. I wasn't aware of what radio systems were around. I was too busy with my job repairing nav systems on airplanes.
    Please keep in touch my e-mail address can be found on my website listed in the description.

    Now it is all being done by satellite.
    One can frequently get an old dish for little or nothing.
    Call some of the embassies around and they may give you a brand new outfit.

    @rbratcherjr I believe I put up a message on a Usenet broadcast group rec.radio.broadcasting asking if anyone had leads or knew who to contact to get a tour of the facility, hence, I got a name and a telephone number. You can access it now through Google groups if you have a login account.

    please I'm not trolling. I really don't understand what is the point of all this equipment. is this for only one radio station and what station is it

    • @matthewroutt3938
      @matthewroutt3938 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, all of the equipment was for a single radio station. The station in question here is a shortwave station known as the Voice of America. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_of_America
