Imagine being a grown "man" - spending so many hours, days and years practising and perfecting your craft in the rain, snow and whatnot, just to end up being a freakin' guy who dives everytime he's in a potential penalty situation. Over half the times, Sterling could EASILY have continued, yet he goes for the penalty.
Honestly...I never thought of it like this until recently but it's the games fault. Because a penalty shot, free kick or red card can literally change the whole game. One goal in futbol can mean everything. So coaches have told guys throughout history to do literally anything in their power to attain them.
I'm not saying I like it or I agree with it. But I do understand why it came to be so prominent in futbol.

When I grew up, being 195cm tall and a "husky" / muscular guy, that was kinda normal in football - I loved how the more dribling-types started to appear, as the sport was still very much physical - but then came the likes of Ronaldo who inspired SO many - both in good, and unfortunately also bad ways.
It's, in my opinion, the rules/ laws of the game - it isn't as clearcut as it used to be. If Sterling, for instance, gets that pen based on the slightest of touches - what about corners etc. where both team are pulling and pushing? Why isn't that penalized? when VAR came, I didn't really care about offsides or approval/ dismissal of goals, I just wanted VAR to take care of Divers - but, sadly, it hasn't exactly done that.
I was watching a video of Messi last night, and in every situation he is driving toward goal, just thinking of scoring. Like you say, Sterling will always slow down and wait for any contact. It's mainly because he doesn't have the skill or strength to get past people beyond knocking it past and running, and I'm tired of people claiming otherwise.

Everyone dives these days but it was actually obstruction either way, can’t sandwich someone off the ball. Neither Danish player made any contact with the ball and one made slight contact with Sterling whilst chopping his leg into his path..

Players have to go down to get them, referees are clueless, Bamford interview is worth checking out and also just think about that Swiss Penalty, Zuber got fully taken out by Pavard but jumped back to his feet and the ref was unmoved, but it was the most blatant pen you’ll ever see.

Why don't they have more tech help? In cricket, we have "hot spot" checks which finds the contact spots. It should be modified to provide the intensity of the contacts too. In addition there are 'ultra edge' finders which finds the minute contacts too. In addition, there many, many camera angles available. It looks like football is very much behind time, when the players - even some of the very famous ones whom the referees are reluctand to call, perhaps - have perfected the art of diving. Perhaps the coaches have diving experts to teach them!!
