Toxic is such a perfect amalgamation of many different forces to make one thing. The samples, the production, the writing, the performance. Fantastic synergy. Truly innovative.
The synth is fat and stinky, too. The descending dominant harmony, tritone substitution, color tones in the wide (two octaves for a pop song) ranged minor melody all go really far towards making this track stand out among a sea of pop songs that sound identical, but the instrumentation might be doing most of the heavy lifting in my opinion. The juxtaposition of synth and strings is great.

Some things missing here: extra strings added onto the Bollywood string sample, the surfer/secret agent/James Bond theme style guitar, the reversal of the high string sample after “slowly it’s taking over me”, and obviously Britney (Cathy sounds amazing of course and her vocals were also used in the final version). This was already a stellar track in demo stage and these added elements elevated it to legendary status
I think Cathy is worth about £40 million, thanks to her talent, hard work and being in the right place at the right time. She knows EXACTLY what makes a great pop song and she's reaped the rewards.

As a musician (bass) this song isnt necesarily my genre but its pop genius, regardless of genre the composition is superb and any one interested in music could not fail to be impressed by this song. Hats off to the writers, when they listened to this final version there must have been some smiled glances at one another that they had created something special. Brilliant song by a stunning women.

It's not a surprise why Cathy Dennis' version and delivery is far better than anyone else's, as she's a professional artist and singer/songwriter and this is her compositio! However, what must be mentioned is the factor that is born and not taught, which is Cathy's known vocal characteristic being a mix of calm, sweet, feminine but always with a tension and simmering rage beneath the surface, and sensuality. It's funny because I could really see her performing her composition Toxic with her old group D-Mob or even as her solo artist days.
