About how the 850hPa temperatures relate to surface temperatures. 850hPa to Surface is theoretically about 15C, this would be the DALR (Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate, 1C decrease per 100m height), which would correspond to a zero humidity atmosphere. The gradient of the lapse rate is affected by moisture (among other factors), even on the hottest days, we see relative humidities of 30-40%. The ELR (Environmental Lapse Rate) is the effective Lapse Rate taking humidity into account. The largest Surface to 850hPa differences I have seen realistically are typically 11-13C in the UK These are typically during heatwaves in the height of summer. In the hottest, driest deserts this will tend toward 15C, but humidity would need to be almost zero. In winter, radiative cooling of surface can generate on some occasions greater thermal gradients than 1C per 100m, this can also occur some desert locations (superadiabatic heating at surface).
