I just decided to get back into cb after about 20 years. I have a 2021 1500 and decided on the newer Radioddity Qt80. I went with a Tram 3500 magnetic antenna, and I'm having heck of a time with swr's. I guess I'm going to have to do some bonding myself.
@k9kj I'm active on the Radioreference forum, and somebody mentioned that if my magnet is not setting flat, it will definitely have issues. I might have to move it to the rear of the cab.
@davidturknett4447 I think they might be right. I used a quad magnetic mount for one of my antennas and mounted it on my roof and it really worked well. I think I have a post on Instagram with it.
I like the anti tailgating device you made. Made a similar device going to a square tubing about 3’ up to the Little Tarheel II mount. Somewhere I have another adapter that allows me to use the stackable aluminum military mast. Also have a ring that fastens to the last mast piece that allows me to do a tension guy for the mast every 120° around the mast. Camera!? 😅😅😅 if they believe it!
Pretty sweet!....im gather stuff to do stealth ham on my Kawasaki KLR 650 motorcycle. Wanna get busy doing POTA from the bike. Love the thought process....well thought out.
Btw....im thinking your engine is already grounded (usually) to the frame....and seems to me the cable for the tailgate might be a ground as well. But you could pop a grpund strap from engine mount to frame and run a strap behind both bolts and shrink wrap to the tailgate cable .....just a thought
Where did you run the 30 amp power supply from/route/through for the FT-891 ? I have the same radio. Hesitate to drill a hole through existing wiring boot in the firewall. Wasn't sure if there's an extra female power connection under the dash or did you run new wires directly from battery? I have Ram 2017 SLT. Very much like you truck. Just no center council. Thanks
Great question, I ran a dedicated 10 gauge wire directly from the battery. There was a spot where I was able to poke through the firewall and I did not have to drill...
Thats a cool idea i plan on adding a dualband and cb radio in my 2019 ram 1500. Im definitely liking your keyer, my main goal for ham radio is qrp CW portable. I just enjoy having the ability to hear things on the ground locally in my area. 73 Kq4hcu
I will do a better video on this, but I just ran it inside of the rubber gasket inside the door and created enough slack so that when you open the door it doesnt pull on the coax.
how did you run your 12volt dc. I really like your set up we have a 2020 Ram ECO diesel that we plan on running mobile, my last mobile was a 95 Dodge 2500 that ran a screw driver ant. we also grounded everything like you did
Nice set up! I just installed my Icom 5100A into my new to me Ram. On my other Ram I used a roof mag mount for my Diamond SG7500 antenna. I am doing a lot of camping this year and now take a canoe on the roof of the truck along with 2 bikes on either side of the canoe. I am affraid my roof mount won't work so well up there with the limited space. I like your door mount antenna. Is that grounded? Do you think I will get comparable TX/RX to the roof mount? Thanks!
Sorry for the delay - the door mount is grounded on the inside part of the mount and not by the traditional method. Not sure if I am missing out on some action because of that. I think the Roof mount should give you comparable or better TX./RX
@@Quantalume I did drill a hole. I made one large enough so I could put a grommet/ bushing around it because that sheet metal was very sharp and I didn't want it to chafe the coax
Wow, nobody asked me that question yet. I ended up borrowing a friend of mine's "nut insert" ( sometimes they're called nutsert") tool to create a nut in the body for a bolt to attach to. I did one on the left and the right side of the bracket.
It's not a good idea only because the radio sends 12 volts through the coax, and depending on how the switch is manufactured, as you go from antenna port to antenna Port, if there is voltage present, it might ground out and cause a short, therefore blowing a fuse, or a chip resistor.
Very clever installation. You've given me some cool ideas for mine. My only question is where do you put your coffee when you're broadcasting...lol? 73's from Florida
Nice ground straps. Did you use a crimping tool for the eyelit thingys ? I know some people put those on in different ways. Haven’t seen you pota lately. Cul fly
My uncle makes these for a living, so I had him make some up for me. He uses a crimping tool. I heard you should really solder them also, but I did not.
Really cool setup TJ! I like seeing other truck mobile setups. Im concerned though. I thought you were solely a CW man and you have not one but TWO microphones?! I though you lost those. Lol 😂
Sweet setup! Smart move on the grounding straps. Does your truck's stereo have an AUX input? Maybe you can pipe the audio from the radios through that and get rid of the speaker box and few more cables?
Thats a great setup. The ram boxes almost make me want to buy a fiat HAHA just kidding I would never buy a fiat LOL they really are perfect for ham radio though. Thanks for posting, I'll be stealing several of your ideas.
For the life of me I don't understand why being able to talk long distance in a vehicle is fun. Mobile is for local. I run a cb and vhf/uhf in my truck only. I want info when driving, not chasing dx.

Nice call sign and plane! The only thing that I haven't been able to nail down is some led nose coming from my rear tail light when I hit the brakes

That is RG-316. You can get it with the K400 Diamond mount

I'm not running Sirius XM radio on my 1500 can I remove that and replace it with a 70cm/2m antenna to run a mobile 2m radio and or bafeong uv-5r

I ran my 12v from the battery via 10 awg to a switch up front on my console then continued to the back to a power pole to the radio.
So you think the ground is causing interference with the shunt and element?
Have you tried the coil connected with out ground from the hitch?
