The CFT1 - CW Field Transceiver
I'm thankful that Jonathan - KM4CFT trusted me to do a review and workout of this transceiver. I think its an awesome little radio and worked well both on a POTA activation but also while mobile!
My only criticism (which may have been more my fault) was the audio just couldnt crank up high enough with an external speaker. Earphones would be better, and quite frankly would probably use them any way on a SOTA activation.

QSO with N4FFF - one of the Ham Radio Duos!!
มุมมอง 293หลายเดือนก่อน
Had a fun QSO sith Mike of the Ham Radio Duo channel here on TH-cam. I had my ham alert let me know when he was calling CQ, and it looks like I just got him. I wasnt expecting to do a QSO since I thought he was doing POTA, but it was a nice surprise, so I took the opportunity to pull up my note pad and try to transcribe the QSO. I hope it helped. CW on!!!
Single Lever Call sign oops
มุมมอง 312หลายเดือนก่อน
For those that are striving for perfection, Ill tell ya - its not easy. Here I am attempting to contact the POTA babe - KO4WFP early this morning, and I screwed up my call sign a couple of times. I'm trying to get more into single lever paddles, and this is how its going :-)
Solid State CW Paddle by 9A5N
มุมมอง 7942 หลายเดือนก่อน
I received a special edition paddle from 9A5N and wanted to showcase it for you all. He sells these paddles from his website and they are made in Croatia. When I ordered mine, it only took about 10 days. It takes two AAA batteries and has some adjustment ability for the sensitivity.

Tnx for a very clear explanation. I'm watching this vid after today experiencing difficulty in sending on an FT 891. After changing from A to B the problem dissapeared. After thirty years of radio, CW only, I never had this problem or asked questions! And I used many radio's and a few keyers during that time.
@@peytuhr very cool! Thanks for watching
Thanks! This was helpful. I completed my first contest this past weekend with the CQ WW CW DX Contest. I was not a big scoring station, but I had a lot of fun learning and working at DX. 73s
@@MyHamRadioJourney that is super awesome! I love using contests to increase my speed and have fun.
Very informative video, now I understand why my IC 718 is not being keyed on cw althouh I have a CAT control. Back to soldering those cables. 73 de Z33ST
Hello, fellow hoosier here. I grew up near Pendleton. I had a walkie-talkie as a kid, and then I saw some walkie-talkies that had a Morse code alphabet sticker on them and a CW key. All I ever learned was S O S and nothing else ever made sense to me. Now I'm 63 and recently found out Morse code wasn't required for a ham license any longer and got my Technician about six weeks ago and just passed my General a week ago and am even studying for Extra now. This video has gotten me interested in finally learning Morse code again. I have an hour commute for listening. 73, Jim KE9BNG
@@jmonte5899 fantastic! I had something similar when I was a kid. It didn't kick in until I was about 20... It's now a lifelong hobby! Good luck and have fun!

TNX qso ..we have same rig !! also ic-705 on POTA 73 Jean VE2JCW
I use an old Vibroplex brass racer that I bought about 35 years ago. It has been restored a couple of times. The paddles are in the same style as on the Bencher and the brass, that turned green really fast, is all chromed. I have adjusted it so the contact spacing is minimal and it's almost no movement needed to key, just a light touch. It's probably completely wrong but I like it and has used it in this way for many years.
@@anderskarlsson9881 that sounds like a great key! I like mine with minimal effort to press also!
I have this paddle, I enjoy it but still learning how to use it
@@pastorlarry7470 that's cool! It's fun!
Thank you for explaining how to work with Morse
I need that!!!
I use a Begali Spark straight key & a Kent twin paddle key which I’ll probably replace with a Begali.. Not only are the keys amazing but buying from the Begali family was an experience too.. Goid video 😇
Thanks for the QSO! Looks like Jonathan did a great job with this little radio. It's on my list of kits I want to build.
@@Tim-K5OHY It was fun when you called. I was like, " hey hey!"
When I first started out, it was with a Ten-Tec magnetic key kit. Although I somewhat liked the kit, I learned that I don’t really like magnetickeyers. The reason is is you have to put pressure on them, and then they all of a sudden give away, finally making the closure. What I found is, I actually like the Bencher the best, because it has springs which are very predictable (and you can adjust the spring of a Bencher), but most of all the paddles, and their associated contacts have extremely low mass. It is this total low mass that I really find to be the absolute best. 73… 😊
@@SpinStar1956 I have also noticed this with magnetic keys.
I've been looking at his page often, hoping he'll offer more colours.. The only thing I am not fond of are the paddle shapes, hopefully he comes out with different styles that are a little more stream lined, or better looking, like the TP-III with rubber tips.
@@MadGoat he does custom colors. I think he has quite a few to choose from.
I'd rather carry 2 fully built QRPLabs QMX radios and still have plenty of money left over for a nice dinner out, or some other ham gear. That's my main rant about this single mode radio kit. The unbelievable, premium price for a radio kit (that you have to assemble yourself), with a cheaply thought out, 3D printed "enclosure".
@@MadGoat I've only played with the qmx one time. I think I need to get one of those and try it out.
You made me pee my pants.. THAT was funny!!
Hello TJ. I am very grateful for the tutorial. I spent a lot of time configuring the connections between my FTdx101MP and N1MM. I uploaded the appropriate files to my PC, set everything up as you stated in the video and...nothing would work. I left the problem until the next day and with a fresh head I tried again - step by step and nothing. I felt that I had not made any mistake in configuring the hardware and that this was not where to look for the problem. For it turned out that the cable connecting the transceiver to the PC was the cause of the problem. This cable was new and supposedly a “good brand” and...when I replaced the cable with another one (taken from the printer) everything started to work ! So thank you again for the great video. Now I can calmly wait for the CQWW DX Contest CW at the end of November. Warm greetings from Poland. Wim, HF5WIM🙂
@@sp5ddj Dzień dobry! I'm very happy you have it figured out! Thank you for watching!
Is there any pc software for the 101mp that reads and sends CW?

Is there a storage/carry case? Not worried about the paddles getting hung up? Otherwise, it looks great!
Heck yeah dude! Killer little rig right there
My buddy has this key, I like it better than my BaMatech III, are you going to ft wayne hamfest?
That IS really nice. Thanks for posting
Thanks for this. I'm just learning with a paddle on the way so good timing.

Want! Have Been waiting for him to run out of that orange color.
Agreed. For the money I am going to get a color I want… but that orange isn’t my thing…
Now i wanna put a ft-891 in my truck and use a keyer😂

This lesson is VERY helpful. I was gifted with a Xiegu G90, and I find that my “dit” is sticking. Someone suggested I switch from CW-A to CW-B. In a follow-on comment he said to search for Iambic-A and Iambic-B. Your YT has me all ready to fire up the G90 (after church tomorrow) and make this switch. I don’t want to burn out the radio by a faulty CW operation. Thank you!!
@@o2bnov0307 very cool! Thank you for your note! And I love that G90 - thinking about getting one
God this looks boring. I swear some people are so boring.

Single levers trip my out which is why im hesitant to try mine when i start training cw. Someone was telling me i should start with a straight key first before i go single lever or lambatic.
I been purposely converting youtube videos to mp3 on the cw alphabet to help me learn CW.
Thats a cool idea i plan on adding a dualband and cb radio in my 2019 ram 1500. Im definitely liking your keyer, my main goal for ham radio is qrp CW portable. I just enjoy having the ability to hear things on the ground locally in my area. 73 Kq4hcu
@@Kq4hcuDan great truck !
I plan on eventually getting a mountain topper style transceiver for everyday CW ON hf, 73 kq4hcu@@k9kj
I got a cheap CW paddle from AliExpress. Its decent for beginners I gues. Is there a way to connect it to anything besides a radio and practice with it? I do have radios and a dummy load to practice, just checking if theres an app for a phone or a iPad that I can connect the paddle and practice while I’m away from the shack? Thanks.
Well I guess its time to start learning CW. 🙂

interference from your alternator?
@@KD9ZHF it's interesting you say that. I've been battling ignition noise since I've had this truck. I was going to try to figure out how to put some ferrite cores on the ignition wires or troubleshoot that.
wow great rig congratulations 73 from kb2uew
How did you get the coax into the cab? Drill a hole?
@@Quantalume I did drill a hole. I made one large enough so I could put a grommet/ bushing around it because that sheet metal was very sharp and I didn't want it to chafe the coax
@@k9kj Great, thanks. I will do the same on my Ram.
I just decided to get back into cb after about 20 years. I have a 2021 1500 and decided on the newer Radioddity Qt80. I went with a Tram 3500 magnetic antenna, and I'm having heck of a time with swr's. I guess I'm going to have to do some bonding myself.
@@davidturknett4447 I say it really does help a ton! I actually learned the bonding from a fellow CBer.
@k9kj I'm active on the Radioreference forum, and somebody mentioned that if my magnet is not setting flat, it will definitely have issues. I might have to move it to the rear of the cab.
@davidturknett4447 I think they might be right. I used a quad magnetic mount for one of my antennas and mounted it on my roof and it really worked well. I think I have a post on Instagram with it.
@@k9kj I'm going to look at moving it tomorrow. I really wanted it to sit in the middle for the best gain.
@@k9kj The quad mount has three magnets?
Excellent video! I have an additional question regarding the use of the Yaesu 891. I currently have an 891 in my truck, and I’m using a 20 m ham stick with a tri mag mount on the roof of the truck. I’m thinking seriously of getting a Yaesu ATAS-120 for Mobile use. I’m hesitant to mount it on the side of my truck for fear of it being stolen, and therefore would like to know, if this antenna can mount on the MFJ 360 S try mag mount for the roof. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks.
Thank you Sir. I sm from Hong Kong. I followed your eight lessonsfor alphabets and spent 5 days. Now i picked up all the 26 alphabets. Thanks again.
Thank you for watching! Have fun!
