- On Sep. 30, 1988, the Space Shuttle Discovery crew started its day with a wakeup call from actor Robin Williams. STS-26 Commander Frederick H. Hauck, Pilot Richard Covey, Mission Specialists Mike Lounge, Pinky Nelson and David Hilmers received the traditional wake-up call on their first day in orbit on a mission to deploy NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-3, part of a network of satellites that support numerous NASA satellites and human spacecraft, including the International Space Station. Astronaut spacecraft communicators, or CAPCOMS, Kathy Sullivan (currently the leader of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and Kathy Thornton, relayed the message from Mission Control in Houston.
Just when you figure Robin Williams has reached the pinnacle of coolness, he manages to top himself!
Robin Williams is a pure and wondrous soul, he did not pass, he just went home.
NSF sent me. What an awesome piece of history and nostalgia!
Nice memory. I was 9 years old when this occurred.
Such a sad loss.
Robin Williams could turn buttering toast into a comical event.
Smiles with a tear. Thank You NASA.
"G-o-o-d morning Discovery! G-o-o-d morning Discovery! Rise and shine, boys. Time to start doing that shuttle shuffle. You know what I mean. Hey, here's a little song coming from the billions of us to the five of you." 😊
Nice tribute.
Certainly a loss for the entire world.
Robin Williams could make anything hilarious.
Did Robin actually sing all the different voices? If so that showed how talented he was.
No
Memories may all we now have of robin but every one a happy one. His star is now shining bright next to neals and patricks.
I've looked and looked for video/audio of the remainder of STS 26 wake up calls - if anyone knows where I might see/hear them please let me know.
Dr. Pinky Nelson got his wake up call from a group of us at his undergraduate school Harvey Mudd College. The LA Times had done a story ahead of the launch and he'd come to visit, with my roommate and I finding he'd lived in our dorm and our room. We'd tried to clean the place up ahead of the visit and stuffed all sorts of harmless contraband into our room, only to have the Times come right in the door.
It’s unusual to see mission controllers be this excited since Gene Kranz said “Keep the chatter down in this room” when Apollo 11 had just landed.
"I'M IN ARTILLERY-JUST PLAY IT LOUD,OKAY?!"
LOL! That would be some way to start the day.
Ah.. the legend robin willians....
Spectacular.
Earth orbit is the place to be
Free wheeling on *Discovery*
Earth, rolling by so far below
Just give 'er the gas and look at this baby go!
We can't believe we made it here,
So high above the atmosphere!
We just adore the scenery,
Yeah, Houston's great but gimme that zero-G!
I still miss that man...
As good as it can get.
This was so cool! 😊

Thomas continues this tradition by shitposting on Dragon Endeavour
NSF brought me here
Too bad they didn't come back with, "Houston, Discovery.... uhhhh... just five more minutes, okay? G'night."
what did he say on the very end? that they all laughed? :)
too funny!
What does the astronaut say at the end there? I can't make it out.
"Good morning Houston."
At the end, CAPCOM (astronaut Kathryn Sullivan) starts to comment to the crew when Cmdr Rick Hauck calls down, "Good Morning, Houston!"
lol
That really wasn't funny at all.
Jeez it’s almost like this song is cheesy enough that it was made in 1988
