    Michael, one note: when you file a nut, you also want to remove the up side of the nut because if you´ll leave the string too much inside, you will have tension problems after the nut that will translate in tuning issues after bending strings. A good rule is to leave 50% of the sting inside and 50% outside. Hope it will help. Great video! Cheers ;)

    thanks for the video, you can fix the nut if you cut to deep. stew Mac sells 3 different nut dust colors you fill the slot with and you add a touch of water thin super glue. let it harden and re cut it. works great. also you can mix baking soda with the super glue and works.

    You are 1-2 years younger than me, we are not vintage guitar players! Way to go holding on to that Gibson. I’m going to check my guitars now.

      Hey Darvin, I just heard Chris Buck say that vintage goes to early 70’s and my Gibson is tha late 70’s … so yes … maybe not vintage 😜… but nice nevertheless.

    Great video Michael. Really appreciate the time you put into this. I am certainly no expert but I would mention that filing the nut should be done after you made sure your neck relief is set, your bridge saddles are set and your frets are level. Keep up the good work.

      … and thanks for your comment… we’re all in it to crack the vast mystery of guitar building and to me the nut is especially mysterious. That’s why I wanted to make this video. By the way I just saw a great video on the trusrod and neck relief from Highline Guitars - I can recommend that 😃👍🏼

    Making bone nuts is one of my favorite works. I make them from scratch oit of cow femurs I getbfrom my butcher. He cleans the meat off and slices them in half and slices the tips off... I tend to get 5-6 bones at the time. I clean them and boil them to get all the remaining tissues out then I bury them on my yard for 2 weeeks. Them I clean the dirt out and slice chunks with my bandsaw to then sand them to size on my belt sander .. after that i degrease them for about a month in minerak spirits and theyre ready to use... If you dont like the natural look you can white them soaking them for 2-5, minutes in oxigen peroxide.... When I get my clients guitar I make them using my belt sander, files and sandpaper from 600 to 2500 grit. For the slots I use hosco nut files and I cut the slots to the measurements of a musicnomad nut slot gauge I get super low action on the first frets and perfect intonation eliminating all kind of tuning issues.
    One important factor I see on your guitars is that its pretty important to size the nut correctly, after you give thenut slot its final depth you neet to file down the nut top to expose about half of each string that way you eliminate excess friction and contact points
    You can check out my work at @guitartechcaracas on Instagram

    Well done! Nobody should be too scared of filing their guitar's nut slots if it needs done. Worse case, you go too far and have to fill the slot with a mixture of cyanoacrylate glue and bone dust (if it's a bone nut) and refile it. Or you might have to make a new nut, but that's okay, too! The more nuts you make, the quicker and better you get at it. The nut is, after all, one of the most easily replaceable parts on the entire guitar.
    I was surprised to see how poorly crowned the Silver Sky frets looked. The frets seemed to have a distinct flat spot on top where they had been leveled and polished, but not nicely crowned before polishing, compared to the telecaster, which had very nicely crowned frets, in my opinion.
    Question: Does anyone else hate Fender style nuts as much as I do? It seems to me that everything that can go wrong with a nut can go more wrong with a thin, Fender style nut than the traditional 1/4" nut. And don't even get me started on how they have a radius on the bottom instead of being flat!

    Uhh.... you know you can change out a nut in about 5 minutes, right?? They just pop right off. I've changed dozen of nuts. You can buy them for less than $20. You definetly don't need to replace the neck. That's just crazy

      @MichaelLagerstedt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike, Thanks for great input. Yes I know but I have never done it. In my head it’s like a big operation but I guess not. I will definitely do that rather than changing a neck just for the nut… Thanks so much for watching 🙏😃

      @@MichaelLagerstedt hey man! I'm very sorry if my comment seemed passive aggressive, as it was not meant to be. You should watch some you tube videos about replacing nuts. It's super easy. I just use an exacto knife to cut around the nut, in case there's some finish sprayed on it, then use a small block of wood and tap it off with a hammer (gently). It's very very easy. I've replaced dozens of nuts, mostly because I prefer the Tusq xl nuts on most of my guitars. Plus, once you know how easy and cheap it is to replace a nut, it will take all the fear out of the process. Good luck man, and congrats on the channels success
