    Wow, to hear such an accomplished guitarist speak with the respect and reverence that Mike does for George is very special. The emotion that he feels for George’s guitar solo is now probably further amplified by the loss of Tom Petty. Having all of those legendary musicians in the Travelling Wilburys was like catching lightning in a bottle.

    That was a well-spent 5 minutes with Mike. Love how he would be intimidated, as we all would, by George, but also how Mike coaxed George into developing the slide solo himself.

    Beautifully honest. That's what makes the heartbreakers so compelling. They are like regular guys that you could sit down with and have a burger/beer and not feel intimidated. Mike, your guitar sound is all your own. The American Girl riff will forever go down as one of the best and most memorable riffs of all time.

      Mike is underappreciated by the masses. But that's due to how much the record industry has sunk in the past two decades. These documentary videos are very important for future generations who have never heard Tom Petty and his lead guitarist (Campbell) play live.

    I get it Mr. Campbell. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by how blessed I've been. I remember once I was in Kansas City with friends and here comes Mike Campbell walking through the building. I was slack jawed and thinking "Here's my chance!", right? But I couldn't think of what to say to a Rock and Roll god, so I just kept going, LOL. But we made eye contact!

    Interesting observation about George's slide playing being melodic instead of raw gutbucket blues slide. I love those sounds, too but George was always about the melody. You can hum most of what he plays on guitar. A true artist and songwriter that we dearly miss. He was a good soul and so are you Mike. As far as lead playing i think your work with the Heartbreakers is some of the best guitar playing on record, period! Love your playing and musical sensibility!

    I love Mike's observations on George's slide playing, Mike definitely took that into his own playing - just listen to the Learning To Fly solo. Absolutely soars like the title implies! I think The Edge and Daniel Lanois really brought that melodic slide playing further into the rock scene as well. I think it adds such a dynamic element for the right song. I'd be remiss to not mention Duane Allman's melodic slide masterpieces as well...

    • @FakingANerve
      @FakingANerve 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn't agree more. Mike looked up to George and as they became friends, George kind of rubbed off on him. When T-Bone Burnett produced The Wallflowers album "Bringing Down the Horse," he sent an early mix of 6th Avenue Heartache to Mike and asked him to add a lead guitar track. Mike didn't know his home studio slide guitar recording made it into the final mix until he heard the song on the radio. Soon after, he said that George called him up and said "I heard you played on this... I didn't know you were doing me now!" 😄
