Very informative video guys! Don’t think I’ve ever seen a spice bush before, but sounds like we need some though as they would be very beneficial here on the homestead. God bless you both!!
Really interesting video! I love seeing different areas of your beautiful property and the things that grow and live there. 😂 leaves turn purple. Silly Ben.
Okay, I'll admit the audio added something to this. So much information that was all new to me. Maybe Ben should rub the leaves on his skin to see if it is an insect repellant, too!
Thanks for the information! I recently learned about the spicebush. I saw that it is a "native alternative" to forsythia (for the yellow flowers). Now I'm on the hunt!
Hey Ben.....we might need to talk brother. ...you know Man to Man. If the wife comes to you and says "we need to spice things up" she probably ain't talking about plants!!! Love you guys!
I ordered organic moringa powder from a different source than usual because the price was better. I hav a mug with a magnetic stir in the bottom and I notice there was stuff stuck to it, which was unusual. It was magnetic metal shavings of some sort. I used a spoon with a strong magnet stuck to it and stirred the dry powder and got the same thing. Not a little bit, but a lot! Now I check everything from Amazon.
Wow, I never heard of spice bush. thank you for this. Poor Ben, i wish I could remember where but I saw a list of several soaps that bugs love, but they do not love coconut oil. slather up Ben. Oh what a precious turkey baby. speaking of AZ I would love to grow Chapparel bush.
Hi S G! I keep trying to find something that will keep the gnats away, but so far nothing I have tried has worked. I am sure OFF would work but we don’t want to put that on our skins. We use to love the smell of the creosote bush when it would rain in AZ. If I remember correctly, chaparral comes from the creosote bush???
@@RenewedHomestead the farmers almanac has a nice article on repelling black flies, I would find out what they are exactly, and put a few drops of an essential oil on a bandana and tie it on before you go out. the article even shows a pic of a nifty net hat that Ben might find sporty.
Thank you! We will check out the Farmer’s Almanac. I have used several different essential oils and so far nothing has helped but I know something out there will work. Lol
We just moved into a property with a large mayapple spicebush thicket on the forest side of the property. Cant wait to put some of it to use. I am going to need to cut it back to maintain the trail anyway and I can replace all the honeysuckle and forsythia the previous owners planted.
I have many, up in a hollow on the Va-Ky border. It is above a creek on the shady side of a house. It is a pretty "edge" plant for people doing permaculture.
Hi, I know spicebush does better being transplanted on a cool day. If you transplant now I would make sure it is on a cloudy, cooler day. Fall is typically a great time. How hot is it there now?
They are great plants. Male spicebush grow clusters of yellow-green flowers in the spring. Female spicebush can be easily identified by the bright red berries that adorn the bush in the late summer months. 🙂
As far as I know you can’t tell the difference until they bloom and produce berries or not. They’re a great plant so plant a half dozen and hopefully you’ll have at least one of each sex. I collected berries and dropped them in places around our property I thought they’d do well. After a couple of years they’re now producing blossoms and for some, berries.
Why is Denise not waving at the gnats? I assume they are face gnats and not "noseeum" gnats...be thankful for that! Did you go to your favorite Big Foot Festival in down Town Marion today? 'ha' Big Foot visits our back yard pretty often...I have photos!! Well...keep the Peace on your side of the hill and let me know when I can help you with something...Mr. Wayne...the original homesteader!
Hi Mr Wayne! Hope you are well. 🙂 Ben says he is just sweeter. 😂 We didn’t make it to Marion today. We have been so busy since getting back from Joel Salatin’s. We appreciate it! Thank you!
Ok I'm going to be rude..there is another channel that I tried n tried to watch n support them BUT she says um every 4 words n my OCD can't stand it..i had to just unsub I luv you guys support by clicking n commenting but um what is um with the ums today? 😢 maybe u can sell the seedling spice bush or find a way to dehydrate the spice berry? Cool info. Thx
Hi lady ryan I don’t know. It happens. Doing videos isn’t easy, we try to be smooth but editing and everything else takes time and sometimes we just don’t notice certain things. We try to catch it but we had already recorded this video and had tech difficulties and we’re trying to get it out for y’all. We think the spicebush is a great plant and wanted to share. We can definitely dehydrate the berry, turning it into a powder is a good way to use it. 🙂 Hope you are well.
I'm sorry I know that was rude..i know taping ( age showing) 😜 is hard I started a channel n realized how terrible I was.😳 I enjoy your educated intelligent vids. I'm not going anywhere thx
It is also the host plant for the swallow tail butterfly❤️. Google a picture of the caterpillar… so cool looking❤️
Hi Empress Kimberly. I saw that. They are so cool looking! Thank you!

Thanks Pastor Lon! God bless y’all. We are praying for you and your family. 🙏🙏
Great Job, Denise you are looking great, Ben you are hilarious. I learned a lot about the spice bush. Very informative.
Thanks so much Momma T! Appreciate you. 🙂

😂 that was awesome! Ben said he actually thought about it during her video. 😂 😂
That is actually a good idea. The spice bushes have a strong smell that might repel insects.
You should get some citronella oil for getting rid of the bugs.. the blackflies are bad here
Hi Elijah, does the citronella work on the flies? It works on the skeeters but not the gnats, unfortunately. 😔
Thanks for the information! I recently learned about the spicebush. I saw that it is a "native alternative" to forsythia (for the yellow flowers). Now I'm on the hunt!
Hi Katrina, that is wonderful! We have a lot of wild forsythia growing on the homestead. The flowers are beautiful. 😊
Hey Ben.....we might need to talk brother.

😂 If you haven’t noticed she is a redhead, so I am already in over my head. 😂
@@RenewedHomestead Ha ha, I did notice! I'm a redhead too!
Oh boy! Did your mom tell you that you we’re difficult as well. 😂
Denise
@@RenewedHomestead boy did she! I was called brat boy in grade school 🤣. Oh the stories I could tell you!
😂 We can’t get our moms together…the stories they would tell on us. 😂 😝

Hi Jamiek485, that is horrible! Thanks for the warning, you just never know.

That is wonderful! We have a bunch of Mayapples coming up now. It is cool. Good luck clearing. I know white honeysuckle can be invasive.
Never heard of this but will certainly be looking for it on the property.
Hi Rita! I hope you find some. Let us know if you do.
@Renewed Homestead I certainly will

Hi gretafields! Great point! They are a good edge plant. 🙂
I have never heard of this before. Of course the furthest East I have ever lived is Boise, ID so I am definitely not Appalachian.
Hi Dwight! We had never heard of it before we came here. We are happy to have so much of it on the property. 🙂
Great video guys
Thanks so much John!
Have several of these in gallon pots and, now, wondering if it's too late to plant (NC Piedmont), given the heat??
Hi, I know spicebush does better being transplanted on a cool day. If you transplant now I would make sure it is on a cloudy, cooler day. Fall is typically a great time. How hot is it there now?
I want one! How do you tell a male from a female spicetree?
They are great plants. Male spicebush grow clusters of yellow-green flowers in the spring. Female spicebush can be easily identified by the bright red berries that adorn the bush in the late summer months. 🙂
That might be one plant you can grow in your backyard. 😂

Hi Dan, thank you. So glad they are starting to produce for you. 😊
Will you be selling the berries for planting? Id love to get some and go up near yall several times a year to visit family if shipping is an issue
Hi Dale, thanks. We haven’t thought about it. We are happy to share some berries if you are close by. No reason to buy them. 🙂
@@RenewedHomestead you guys are awesome. I'll reach back out closer to when the berries are ripe (early fall if I remember correctly).
In the fall for sure. Sounds good! 🙂
