Amazing! She took a big chance, no matter how much she loved him. I did the same and ruined my life. It's a major gamble. We all want to believe I'm happy endings and that love conquers all. But the reality is much more grim than that. Good for them both. He has a great woman and I'm glad for him. She has a man who recognizes it and what he put her through plus her loyalty, so I'm happy for him. I believe they beat the odds.❤

Gerry Rafferty's tracks are crafted, worked to near-perfection, you can clearly understand where he and his crew put the work in. It's a rounded feeling in his songs, they mean something and they are full of expression; he's my favourite singer song writer!

Any man who has had a strong woman in his life, to support him through the dips as well as the peaks, could not offer a lyrical tribute any more meaningful or groovy than this. Rafferty was a master musician and lyricist, and his troubled times thru addiction to the drink added huge depth and a real honesty to what he wrote about.

Cannot bypass “Still the Same” either. The song isn’t actually about a literal gambler, it’s about the vain Type-A overachievers who always seem to fall on their feet and that Seger met almost everywhere he went on his first outings in Hollywood. The resonance of this song to the world today - now overrun with these types of people everywhere, not just in California - is eerily significant. Said Seger in an interview: “...They're just very charismatic, but they have tremendous faults, but part of the appeal is the charisma. You overlook everything because of the charisma. That's a gift and a curse."

There's the constant instrumental presence of the organ, I think it is, in the background of the verses. It brings the feel of melancholy to the piece. I absolutely adore this song. What's so sad is knowing that despite his appreciation and the heaps of talent evident in all his music, Gerry Rafferty died of complications with alcoholism. At the very least, his presence lives on.

There is a stretch of Hwy 101 on the route to LAX from Santa Barbara, CA that runs literally right along the ocean coastline - it's sometimes called the Rincon Causeway, or the Rincon Sea Level Road - where I have driven my car on a warm, clear evening with a star-filled sky, totally jamming to this epic Gerry Rafferty song and feeling like I was one with the Universe.

I can tell all of you fell in love with this song even when two of you tried to say the opposite. Your faces told the story. Those lyrics were written by a generation where we seriously all wanted The Real Thing, not the plastic cold weirdness of today. The words are just too real and clear not to react in a powerful way. Its good to want a woman like in the song, and its good to want a man who loves that song.

Exactly. Back then they wrote songs with heart. This is a classic. No sex , no drama , it's about a great love between a woman and man and he adores her. No sliding down a pole into the lap of ........ sometimes I am flabbergasted

@@bethgresham404 Disagree - there were plenty of popular songs from this era that were about sex and drugs that had music videos of scantily dressed women, in the same way there are many popular songs now written with the same passion and heart that you're remembering. It's just the songs about sex from when you were younger you didn't listen to, and you aren't involved with modern music.

You talked about Surf songs... Reminds me of That Thing You Do. It is such a great/fun movie! Tom Hanks directed, wrote, and starred in. He also help write the songs in it. Anyways they all have a 60's feel and one song is in a scene at the beach.

Made this comment on another of your reactions, but please keep in mind that back in the day there was nothing digital, no auto tuning, no sampling. You either played it or sang it bang on or you didn't. It also seems as if the poetry was more important back then. Like this song of devotion, others told stories that make you smile or tear up. Listen to the perfection of Karen Carpenter...she did almost everything in one take! Listen to the poetry and storytelling of Gordon Lightfoot. They just don't make stuff like that anymore. You guys make this old man happy to see younger folks discover what was. Good on ya!!

The guitar totally sounds like the work of Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, but it's not him.
Anyhoo, speaking of Lindsay Buckingham, check out two of his solo hits from the 1980s: "Go Insane" and "Trouble." Mick Fleetwood and John McVie might have been the heart of Fleetwood Mac, but Buckingham was definitely its soul.
