But what I'm really saying is that it's a prime time to move to St. Louis. Get in before it gets hot again! Which two non-American places should I compare next? Which do you like better, St. Louis or Chicago?
Mr. Beat Compare Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana next. Both are about directly in the middle of their state, both have almost the exact same population. They're less than 200 miles from each other both off of I-70 and they are both state capitals!
You could take "New Cairo" recent idea and do one with purposely-built capitals in the last 100 years, like Islamabad and Brasilia. Or maybe St. Petersburg and Washington, if you are going to another time-frame.
@@vexxevxevvex2622 Chicago is cleaner and does not smell bad like NYC. The Loop is just if not more IMO glamorous than Manhattan (I prefer the Loop) but both are great. The people are more laid back and much friendlier in Chicago. In my experience about half the people (not talking about the south side) are stoic and just keep to themselves but will say excuse me if they cut you off while walking. The other half are very friendly and always want to offer a helping hand. In NYC they bump into you and keep going, and are pretty rude. In all my trips to NYC, never once did a person say excuse me to me. NYC is more trendy in clothing regardless how awful the trend looks on a lot of people and are very commercial. In Chicago there are trendy people but a lot just wear what they want according to their own taste and personality. Overall, I much more prefer Chicago, specifically the Loop and North side of the city the most. NYC is my second fav city specifically Manhattan.
You see Cardinals and Blues banners, you see Fredbird Plushes and Stanley Cup 2019 T-Shirts. Would we care about a Rams Super Bowl game? Would we throw parades and parties? Would we scream so loud that some people go deaf? NO! Would we buy Super Bowl T-Shrits? NO! Would we CARE? NO! We’re fine with MLB and NHL teams and don’t need an NFL team.
@@papadaddy1103 : I lived out east for decades and drank almost exclusively bottled water or filtered water. The water was always heavily chlorinated and always had some kind of off taste. I only drink tap water now since I'm back in St. Louis.
My heart is in Chicago but I moved to central illinois because of my job. Then years later Barnes Jewish hospital in st.louis saves my life from a massive brain tumor. Don't judge me or a city.
You can't beat Chicago's Summers. It might hit 90 degrees and humid for a day or two but then turns on a dime and goes to 75 with low to no humidity with that cool breeze from the lake for a couple of weeks. Another couple of really hot days and then another two or three weeks of 70's weather. I love Chicago's Summers. The Winter, is another story though and you will freeze your ass off.
You’re wrong, most of Chicago’s summer especially in July and August are very sunny, and it’s not sticky heat like it is in St. Louis. St. Louis is brutal in the summer, so humid
Yes sir, John Hughes filmed a lot in suburbs around the city 😀 and that movie Steve Martin did with all the kids. I think they lived in a big house in Evanston
I'm a Chicagoan myself and totally agree that the city has way more going for it than St. Louis, but it's really not a fair comparison in my opinion. Having visited St. Louis before and thoroughly enjoyed my time there, especially at City museum and the southern neighborhoods, I think it's important to appreciate each city relativistically, and not in absolute terms. I think St. Louis is trying its best to improve, so no need to put it down.
Exactly. Cities like St. Louis and Detroit need all the help they can get. When those cities win, America wins. Everyone knows Chicago is a major US hub. Duh.
Next time you go to St Louis, check out Historic St Charles. It's a quint little walking street that has like cobblestone roads, there are some small businesses, it's right off the Missouri River that you can walk right up next to it, great small cookie business, and other things like a cute little book store, a soda bar or whatever, etc etc. Also a decent cafe is right up the road, a hipster little place called Crooked Tree. It's an overlooked area. Also forest park is decent.
STL FOR LIFE!!!! stl is very underrated. we have botanical gardens, an amazing zoo, many museums, busch stadium, enterprise center, amazing restaurants and toasted ravioli/bbq, and of course, the arch. we might also be getting a soccer team:)
Cookie Monster So HA! did I hurt your feelings “dumb bitch”? 😂 never said it was a perfect city just saying that Chicago is better than STL . Lmao “St. Louis stand up!” lol what a shit joke, everyone there is too busy fucking their cousins or killing each other.
Brad Luck Not all Bosnians are Muslims. The ones that are Muslim are called “Bosniaks.” Bosnian is not an ethnicity or (obviously) a religion. It’s just a geographical area that was zoned, and is made up of different ethnicities and religions. . There areSerbian-Bosnians and Croatian-Bosnians, as well. These are the ones that didn’t covert to Islam. The Serbian and Croatian Bosnians are Christian.
Enjoyed the comparison. I have spent an inordinate amount of time in both. The way I describe St Louis to people who don't know it is that St. Louis learned everything the hard way. They had the first urban freeway rammed through a residential neighborhood. I-55 was rammed through Soulard, a neighborhood that looked more like DC's Georgetown, and I-70 jammed through North St. Louis. In the case of North St. Louis, the free way cut off all the residential housing from where the jobs were! St. Louis experienced white flight very early. They lost their transit system to buses and corruption very early. St. Louis also experienced heavy racial injustice and riots much earlier than Chicago did. The East St. Louis riot of 1917 was horrific. Fun fact, East St. Louis's entire black population was originally from just 4 counties in Mississippi, recruited to be strikebreakers against Armour packing. Culturally both cities have an extraordinary sense of humor and have produced some very funny people. St. Louis has also contributed extraordinarily to musical history (more so than Chicago in many ways). Tina Turner, Miles David, Chuck Berry...the list goes on and on. Chicago, by comparison, has been much more successful in the film world. It reminds me a lot of Pittsburgh and Cleveland, Pittsburgh has virtually no successful musical acts, but is incredible in the film world. Cleveland, the opposite. Chicago technically has three commercial airports (Gary, ORD, MDW) and St Louis has 2 (STL and BLV). St. Louis had the first enclosed airport terminal in the world, which is what everyone else based their design after. St. Louis did once have two Baseball teams, NBA Hawks, NFL Cardinals, and NHL Blues. Neither city is representative of their state's overall cultures. Most Chicagoans came to the city from the East and have very little knowledge of the rest of the state. Many St Louisans came from New Orleans or from the East, same issue, little knowledge of the rest of their state. I think overall, St. Louis is just a lot more interesting and has more topography. Chicago has more going for it economically, but man, all of those suburbs look identical. The St. Louis accent is unrelated to anywhere else in the state or region. The areas you missed: Segregation deeply hurt St. Louis as people traveling from Coast to Coast by rail didn't want to have to pass through a segregated state to change trains. Better to go via Chicago. The Chicago fire killed Chicago's brewing industry which is why St. Louis and Milwaukee succeeded in that industry. The loss of the TWA hub also deeply hurt St. Louis's competitiveness. St. Louis county seceding from St. Louis city in 1877 was the key event that caused the population to decline. The older (I would say more interesting) cities in the Midwest, Detroit, Cincinnati and St. Louis suffered from racial violence and disaster more so than their peers. As a result, boring flat cities like Chicago, Indianapolis, and Minneapolis have grown exponentially at the expense of cities that have contributed more to American culture. For more info, I'd take a look at "Nine Nations of North America." Thanks for making the video. Adam
Great analysis. I haven't seen a city with better quality housing stock than St. Louis. I've never been to a city that has the architectural details that the homes St. Louis have. Brick mansions for literally miles, unfortunately many in decay but still ....The guy in the video was bragging about Chicago being this great architectural playground. And perhaps that true but let any Chicagoan go to the Central West End and they will not believe the staggering opulence of the homes there and their relatively cheap prices. bigoldhouses.blogspot.com/2014/08/oz-in-st-louis.html And though this particular section of the Central West End is gated and well preserved you can easily buy one of these types of houses relatively cheap all over the city. These types of houses are everywhere in the city. And I'm talking not the county (even though Clayton and U city has some of these same types of marvels) but in the heart of the city. Check out the houses in Lafayette Park, Benton Park, Pershing Place, Soulard District, down along Russel and Flora and Kingsbury, and the houses in the Shaw district. Opps. @@labgirl3501 it doesn't artificially lower the population, it's the definition of the city. They don't take Cook County for measuring Chicago, they measure just the city limits of Chicago who does have over 2 million within the city limits. If the city and county never split originally, then St Louis would normally include the county, but since they did, it now doesn't, thus the city population is pathetically low (which is why metropolitan regions SHOULD be included in everything since the metro area supports the city).
Yeah we got some of the best doctors we have one of the best medical schools in the country here people actually come from all over the world to go to medical school in St Louis
As someone who grew up in University City (a quarter mile from St.Louis) it’s sad to see the city’s decline, I would rather live here than Chicago because of the weather, and also I think you should have mentioned Forest Park more than just the art museum.
Forrest park is nice as is the science center and the zoo there. But then you can counter with the Field museum, Shedd aquarium, museum of science and industry, Adler planetarium and the beach/park along the whole length of the city along lake Michigan.
devildart I’ve been to all of the things that you mentioned, and they’re nice, but if you include the weather I’d prefer STL I was on the navy pier last June and it had a windchill of like 40 degrees feirenhight, and last April when I went, it was freezing.
@@henrynarkiewicz8778 depends on what kind of weather you like. I like the more mild days in Chicago then the four months in the blast furnace called the St louis summer.

britton coil parts of the city are nice places to live, for example I live in a clean walkable part of the city (or county technically by 1/4 mile) with very little crime beyond the occasion car robbery, and it’s a nice place to live.
"Another thing I discovered while researching was that a lot of St. Louis folks talk trash about Chicago, yet Chicago doesn't even pay attention to St. Louis." Then proceeds to show a minute and a half video of a Chicago folk talking trash about St. Louis. You didn't research enough lol.
St.louis hate people from Illinois most in the hood parts of you leave your car over their at night and has Illinois plates they breaking in your car and shit

I love both your channels! Been watching them independently for a year. By the way City Beautiful, I live in Vacaville and always love traveling between sac and the bay. It’s cool to know I’m kind of in your neighborhood. You should do a video on sac and convince me to like it. I lived in Tucson for a while so the heat is a non issue but I hate how flat the city is. And forgive me if I’m wrong but I just can’t think of anything unique to Sac. You should prove me wrong in a video! 🤠
Wow! Being from Sweden, Europe, I hardly knew anything of St Louis, more than that my grandma used to listen to St Louis blues with an old singer named Alberta Hunter. So this was indeed a great lection for me to learn more about the American history, aswell as your geography. Great video as usual, mr Beat!
ugh. I miss STL a lot. I'm not from there but lived there over two years for law school. it has so much character and history, and beautiful architecture. one of the more magical historical cities in the USA, and people don't even know!
GREAT VIDEO.. besides the end lol. I love my city St. Louis so much, so much history behind it. I've also been to Chicago many times and I must say that Downtown Chicago is SO BEAUTIFUL. I hate to see how St. Louis didn't capitalize on the opportunities it had to become bigger than Chicago. I love downtown St. Louis so much as well and I'm always inspired by it. It's a great Major city. I like that it isn't as hectic as Chicago.
You didn’t mention Ted Drewes! I am a proudly living in STL and I love it here! Ive visited Chicago..I was impressed but it was too crowded and too fast for my taste. Awesome video!
So we got it finally: St Louis didn't encourage rail growth to protect the river boat industry. Ooopps! Seems like a mistake given the rivers run more north-south & the railroads more east-west. I'm happy St Louis is the smaller, less expensive, less crowded & therefore better place to live. No place is perfect but St Louis is easy-going, welcoming & affordable compared to most cities I've lived in. Thank you St Louis for not being Chicago.
Would just like to say that Chicago is ranked as an Alpha Global City, so Chicago would have a key role with the global economy as a result of it having the infrastructure, services, and more transportation to serve the global economy. And what i can tell from google satellite view is that there are no beaches in St Louis, compared to Chicago which has beaches on the Lakefront. One of Chicago’s suburbs is also home to one of the world’s fee Baha’i Temples. Chicago neighborhoods in the North Side have also gone through gentrification during the 2000s, but the gentrifying neighborhoods are in proximity to the downtown area. The city has more international tourists that come to visit due to the fact that more international airlines and international passenger and cargo flights that operate to Chicago, a hint that Chicago is a global city as mentioned before. St Louis’s Airport only serves passenger and cargo flights within the US-only. In conclusion, Chicago is becoming an important global city that helps contribute to the world’s economy. Also i’m not Polish but Chicago has a large amount of Polish people living in the city, so that means Polish is most likely the third most spoken language in Illinois behind English and Spanish.
Grew up in Aurora, moved to Saint Louis. I don't mind visiting Chicago (a warm beer and a cold Chicago dog *no ketchup* at Wrigley, followed by a Giordano's Deep Dish is always a win) l, but the MUCH cheaper cost of living, richer history, more beautiful architecture, and slower pace of Saint Louis, is unarguably superior. So many more attractions are also cheaper (many free) than the Chicago equivalents as well. We have the Arch, a dozen award-winning performance theaters, a major concert venue, Busch Stadium, the Busch Brewery, Grant's Farm, Forest Park, the Art Museum, City Museum, a 250+ year old farmer's market, one of the oldest Basilicas in the country, etc... and almost every one is FREE (2 of them give you free beer too!). The annual Taste of Saint Louis costs abour 1/4 of what you'll spend at the Taste of Chicago, and we have an annual Air Show, just as you do (okay, so we don't have the water part). I'd take Saint Louis over Chicago, any day.
You didn't even mention the awesome zoo we have. Was there a week ago, paid 4 dollars to pet the sting rays and like 4 more to feed them. They had to practically drag me out of there I had so much fun lol
Tim Decker I went to saint Louis and I am from Chicago. Sorry to say saint Louis is pretty much shit compared to Chicago. Also the architecture in Chicago is state of the art much better then a arch lol.
@Tim Decker Don't get me started on the T(W)aste of Chicago, as food tickets there are excessively overpriced as all f! I personally prefer smaller and more unique festivals myself where food isn't as overpriced, such as Pierogifest in Whiting, IN, and also Taste of Wisconsin in Kenosha, WI. Within Illinois, I really like Taste of Melrose Park a lot. Also Ribfest in Chicago's North Center's neighborhood, is a really great food fest as well.
@Bigsmoke Saint Louis does have great architecture, but you have to look for it. It's more in its neighborhoods, where you find the hidden gem interesting architecture. That said, Chicago(where I live) also has areas where architecture is pretty blah, such as anywhere in Norridge, Harwood Heights, or any of the nearby far northwest side areas. Chicago's Norwood Park neighborhood is nice though, and I'd say the exception to that rule very close to there. Especially in that circle area, a little south of the Norwood Park Metra station. What can I say, except that all cities have their positives and negatives. Including Chicago with some negatives. Like others said, it'd be fairer to compare Chicago to a peer very big city like Toronto or Los Angeles, in a video. And not've tried to compare both Chicago and Saint Louis in a video....

Actually Saint Louis is the so called "US capital of Chess". The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis (located across the street from the World Chess Hall of Fame) has been hosting the US Championships and US Women's Championships since 2009.
St. Louis didn’t “get rid of” the Rams. A man who shall remain unnamed did and he trashed all STL sports fans to do it. I’d love to have the Rams here but how could they ever succeed in the Lou when you have an owner who never wanted them to in the first place?
@@cookiemonsterso3950 Most cities have much less likelihood of being gunned down by a stranger. I was born in St. Louis and left at 33. I think many people in St. Louis have a version of Stockholm syndrome. If they could get over it, maybe they could turn things around.
@@YSLRD Like I said: Any city that has violence in it, isn't a good city. I was born and raised in St. Louis. I know my city isn't the greatest, but it holds a special place in my heart. People from other cities can't say the cities they're from are better. All cities have violence. If your city is violent, then you can't call it better than any other city
I'm from Saint Louis and the old city leaders kept making mistakes that lead to the decline of our city in the future. They denied the railroad because they wanted to stop the protect the river industry. They also separated St. Louis country freezing the borders. Once suburbanization hit everyone left for the county leaving the city shrinking and causing crime rates. The county refuses it to join back and annex so it frozen in its border losing population. It could have been the size of Chicago if they were constantly shooting themselves in the foot.
Yeah I agree. I live in Chicago, and I hate when people try to say things like that whether it's Chicago is better or another city is better. I think every city is beautiful and unique. I went to L.A. last year, and it's such a beautiful and lovely city. Very different from the midwest. I haven't gone to St. Louis in a long time, so I'm hoping to go some time soon.
@Evan Wibbenmeyer I respect your opinion. Honestly I'm not a big fan of living in cities because they have a lot of down sides. It sucks that they have huge crime rates, and the city government (whether democrat or republican) isn't very helpful. It can be very problematic at times as well. In the downtown area I've met people who are rude and obnoxious. The only people who are welcoming and nice are usually in the urban and suburban areas. There you don't get many egotistical people like the guy at the end of the video. What also sucks is that the cost of living in big cities are awfully expensive compared to what you could get when you move anywhere else. That's probably why my grandparents and aunts left the city to live in the suburbs. The only reasons I'm staying in Chicago is because I was raised here, and I know many people who live here. Plus I could never see myself living in a small town because I was raised in the city life. I don't think I could ever fit in with people in a small town. Not only that but there's so many small towns that I won't know where to go. Sure I could go out and live in the suburbs with my relatives, but I don't really love the suburbs they live in. I really hope that in the future years I finally make a choice.
@Evan Wibbenmeyer I honestly don't really feel bad for the rest of Illinois. It is true that they don't get much attention, but they do nothing to help them get attention. They should try to bring attention to their cities. They should have one of their cities annex surrounding neighborhoods so the population grows. That way atleast one city will be on the map. Maybe not as popular as well known as major cities, but it will get more attention. Also having our capital as Springfield is not doing us much justice (every state has a city named Springfield as far as I know). As for their vote not mattering, it depends. If they really wanted to vote red well they should move to Indiana. The fact is that Illinois is a very blue state and will most likely not change in future years. That is unless they split from Chicago; however, it seems quite unlikely.
It's kinda laughable to even compare the two cities. I mean historically it makes sense to compare, but nowadays they aren't even in the same league. Chicago compared to Toronto and St Louis compared to Kansas City makes more sense tbh. Basically the only thing to compare between the two cities is Chicago has way more going on and things to do but is pricier to live in/near. St Louis has less going on but is more affordable. That is basically it.
I wouldn't even go that far. There is A TON to do in St. Louis. Best of all, most are free. They just aren't very well advertised to tourists. We have the highest rated Zoo and public park in the entire country, both of which are 100% free. Our Fox Theatre is also one of the highest rated venues in the world. The last authentic Italian neighbor is also in St. Louis, and it's not touristy like Little Italy is. It's an actual, genuine community with some of the best Italian restaurants in the United States. Speaking of which, any food blog will tell you St. Louis is the #1 place to be if you're looking to eat. Not only do we have some of the best and more unique restaurants, again they're not very touristy and their prices aren't over inflated. St. Louis also has a new aquarium and ferris wheel opening this December. Grant's Farm is another amazing place to visit in St. Louis. It's like a smaller Zoo, but is owned by the Busch family, sells a shit ton of beer, and is also the farmer home of President Ulysses S. Grant. If you want to go to a Zoo that let's you get REALLY close to the animals, which don't be deceived by the name, they have elphants, moose, camels, zebra, and any other animal you'd typically see in a Zoo, while also being drunk off your ass, that's the place to go. Did I mention that's free too? If you want to know things to do in St. Louis, you can't trust tourist websites. Go to a mall or a restaurant, ask the employees there. They'll give you the best places to visit
As a Chicagoan, I'm deeply sorry for that. Most of us actually have respect for St Louis and aren't unneccessarily egotistical about our city. I actually love your city especially since I have family who live there.
Great video as always. Some suggestions: Santiago vs Buenos Aires (large developed South American cities) Tallinn vs Helsinki (were originally similar, right near each other, changed drastically after WWII) Los Angeles vs San Francisco (most famous cities in Cali) Beijing vs Shanghai (large very relevant Chinese cities) Mexico City vs São Paulo (cities fighting for domination of Latin America, known for being pretty developed in countries that are not)
This made me laugh. As a STL resident and history major, lots of errors in this video, but I love your sarcasm and passion. STL is just more historical. We also have a habit of fucking ourselves out of success lol
Chicago is much more historical and celebrates it by welcoming all cultures into various neighborhoods. STL literally only has black and white and major racism
@@rondas7772 The racism is crazy, I live about 2 hours from St. Louis lived there for a short time and go there sometimes. 80% of the time the blacks are just evil towards me for literally no reason and the whites are extremely snobby if they have even alittle bit of success going on lol.
@@AQUAPHREESH193 how about the Ohio four way, Toledo vs Cleveland vs Columbus vs Cincinnati. We all damn well know that Cleveland will be at the bottom of the barrel among the four Ohio cities.

I grew up near Chicago but STL has my heart. Small enough to have a grip on everything that’s going on, but large enough to feel like you have a solid choice of things to do. The food scene is fantastic for a city its size, and the people are super nice. Weather sucks like the rest of the Midwest though. Of course Chicago is the “better” city.. but St. Louis has much potential to grow and develop into a regional powerhouse if the city government can get its shit together.
I was born and raised in St. Louis. I also lived in the westside of Chicago for a year. Both cities has its problems, but St. Louis overall has more history and culture. You have more buildings in Chicago, but St. Louis for a smaller city has tons more to offer without breaking the bank to enjoy it. Before I go. At the end of the video that guy said go Cubs. Lol😂😄😂😄😂. Um. How many World Series titles has the Chicago Cubs won? How many World Series titles has St. Louis won? Yeah. I rest my case.
Why didn't you talk about how Chicago rose the entire city's buildingings without closing business? Or how Chicago had the first inland aquarium by importing sea water? Chicago was also the fastest growing city the US ever had.
Sejal Khan yes it did! It was also the site of the first nuclear reactor built by the University of Chicago. Chicago has lots of crazy good accomplishments in the past.
Nunovia Gottdamnedbizzness Sure Chicago isn't doing the crazy for the time antics it used to, but it doesn't really need to. It just needs to function like a normal major city, and it does.
The reason that the metropolitan areas are similar sizes is because the metropolitan area of St. Louis is defined by the county lines, including large stretches of rural areas. Chicagoland on the other hand pretty much ends at the cornfields. Two very different ways of considering metropolitan areas. If they were judged by similar standards, the difference in sizes would be clearer.
Compare Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana next. Both are about directly in the middle of their state, both have almost the exact same population. They're less than 200 miles from each other both off of I-70 and they are both state capitals!
Coming from Chicago and now living in indianapolis....indianapolis is a city of transplants kinda like a midwest version of atl because half the ppl here are from somewhere else💯
I have been living in both cities for almost 2 years now. I actually love them both for varying reasons, but I must say that owning and operating a business is FAR more attainable in St. Louis than in Chicago. The acquisition of commercial property is not only more affordable in St. Louis, there are not nearly as many licensing requirements or tax expenses as there are in Chicago. Ex: Cook County (Chicago) requires nearly $12,000 for General Contractor Licensing plus annual maintenance fees. St. Louis City (which is its own county) requires an initial fee of $250 for the same license which must be renewed annually. The license fee increases in St.Louis as a company grows in size. That said, I thoroughly enjoy most weekends in Chicago and enjoy running a business in St. Louis.
You missed two things about St. Louis. Forest Park is the largest metropolitan park in America, larger than Central Park in New York. Also, St. Louis has the most free attractions of any city in America. St. Louis pizza sucks so hard, so I can't knock Chicago for having better pizza, but also The Rams left, we didn't get rid of them.
Saint Louis also has Forest Park (huge green-space, 2nd only to Central Park in NYC) and the Botanical Gardens (which are amazing). I think City Museum deserved more attention, as it is super-unique. In terms of sports, viewers should note the longstanding, heated rivalries between Cardinals/Cubs and Blues/BlackHawks.
Wow and in the St.louis metro area its actually possible to own a home and save for retirement without having to pay IL + Chicago taxes I'm biased if you cant tell also LGB!! LETS GO CARDS
Chicago is so huge and has world class museums, shopping, theater, Finance and the worlds best and tallest architecture and parks, beaches, Public transit, best food, friendliest people and the city is so clean! And the world best downtown area and endless incredible neighborhoods, and the breathtaking River walk! Chicago has been ranked best city on earth last two years for many reason.
Great video. I am a Chicagoland native living outside Saint Louis now. I love my hometown and miss it dearly. But I want to point out that the crime rates are not a good comparison between the two cities. A huge chunk of Chicago's violent crime happens where few people go. It is mostly contained to very low income areas. It Saint Louis, the crime is a little more spread out, but not much. Also because of Saint Louis's weird County/City issues, the crime rates are highly misleading. They take all the crime from the county and divide it over the population of the city. This results in skewed statistics because living inside the city limits is awful and nobody wants to live there. Crime needs to be better addressed in both cities, but for the average person in the metropolitan area, it is not nearly the problem that the stats suggest. Furthermore, I would argue that St. Louis is vastly safer than Chicago.
Depends on where u live chicago metro is pretty safe just like st.Louis metro but if u compare the 2 cities st.Louis is worse Chicago is way bigger st.Louis downtown areas crime is off the charts
In viewing the actual city populations it is important to note that St. Louis shot itself in the foot when it broke off from the surrounding county to be an independent city. As the St. Louis county became more prosperous than St. Louis, many moved there in the 50s, seriously damaging the city’s wealth as there less people to collect taxes from and population has diminished. Now the city is 360,000 while St. Louis County is 2.5 million.
Separating from the county was the right move in the context of its time. In the 1870’s, the residents of the city were getting double taxed by the city AND the county for the exact same services. The county only had a few small towns and the rest was either farmlands or forests. The city was paying to prop the county up, which they didn’t like. When they left the county, the city flourished. Suburbanization was what made the decision backfire decades later.
I just got to know City Beautiful a few weeks ago! I've been subscribed to you longer, but that's really cool that you've done a collab! For comparisons, may I suggest: Paris-London, Amsterdam-Hamburg (or Brussels), Tokyo-Kyoto or Seul-Tokyo, Beijing-Shanghai, HongKong-Taipei, Oslo-Stockholm, Milan-Munich, Athens-Istanbul-Rome (any pair would do), Moscow-St. Petersburg, Vienna-Berlin, Bern-Transylvania, Dublin-Belfast, Glasgow-Edinburgh, Budapest-Bucharest, Tehran-Riyadh (or Baghdad), Qatar-Kuwait, Rio-Sao Paulo, Havana-Buenos Aires
This comment section is only proving Mr. Beat's point. I literally can't go 2 comments without seeing people from St. Louis talk about how great their city is. Besides baseball, I swear to God we barely mention St. Louis in Chicago. What did Chicago do to deserve this 🤣🤣🤣. And considering no Chicagoan is going to talk about this, I might as well. - Blackhawks have 6 Stanley cup titles - Chicago is considerably clean - Chicago has lost the title of a city with a ton of crime years ago. - We have almost 120 skyscrapers - The sears tower has the highest observation deck of any building in the USA - We have 2 very large Zoos - many people overlook the fact that less than an hour away, there is a 600 acre botanical garden in, I think the mansion town of Winnetka? - we have a MASSIVE aquarium - we have the museum of science and industry - we have an art museum - we have a kids museum - we have multiple historic churches and cathedrals - when it comes to pizza and hotdogs, no body in the USA does it better than Chicago - there is the Chicago planetarium - we have Navy Pier where you can take an architecture tour down the Chicago river and ride around lake Michigan AND ride a 180 foot tall ferris wheel while being right next to what used to be the tallest residential building in the world during the 60s and 70s (it's that black building that looks like a very tall fidget spinner) - we have some of the best universities in the nation with the university of Chicago ranking as one of the best in the world - speaking of education, Chicago is also home to some of the best highschools in the nation such as Lane tech, Jones, Whitney young, and Walter Payton college prep - there are multiple observation decks throughout the city where you can get a bird's eye view of the city - Millenium park is a modern park that combines nature with sculptures and is home to the famous bean - the street next to Millenium park has tons of historic tall buildings dating back to the late 19th century. - you could walk or bike along the side of the beach and visit Buckingham fountain - Chicago has beautiful beaches considering it doesn't border an ocean. - Random note: if you like pigeons, we have a lot of those.....
Great video as always! Not sure why St. Louis would have an issue with Chicago. In my mind, they wouldn't have anything to do with each other. Leaving the country for comparisons...how about extremes? Svalbard vs Ushuaia (furthest north - furthest south?) Tokyo vs. Valletta (Largest capital city vs smallest capital city). Or, London vs. Hong Kong vs Singapore vs New York (a comparison between the financial centers of the world).
A lot of it is sports, part of it is the "holier than thou" vibe Chicago gives off. It's the same sentiment Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and Detroit feel kind of.
I live in Streeterville in Chicago ❤ Thank you again for another great video Mr.Beat , although you should've mentioned who founded Chicago ( Dusable ) as you did with St Louis , ( i also used to live in the suburbs of St Louis when i was 10 )
Great video, Mr. Beat! Couple more things I wanted to add. Both cities have their share of bridges, but St. Louis has the Eads Bridge, the world's first all-steel bridge. Chicago has a lot of drawbridges. Also, Old US Route 66 connects both cities, today it is Interstate 55. Speaking of transportation, while Chicago is identified with the railroads, the city would not have existed without the Erie Canal.
I drive for a living and every time I’m in Chicago and surrounding areas I’m in a hurry the get out of there. Every time I’m in St. Louis. I love taking my time and even go driving around the city. I like the environment there very much.
@@PhilipMReeder I'm not trolling, I'm being honest. I've been to St. Louis. It's crap. The best parts of yall whole metro area is Clayton and Richmond Heights. Am I lying?
Thanks for doing this comparison! I am a St. Louisan, and I will plead guilty to stoking the rivalry, even when Chi-Town wants no part of it. I will admit that their pizza is miles better, though. I wish you had included more about the cultural institutions and attractions of St. Louis, though. Yes, we have the free Zoo and Art Museum, and the incredible and unique City Museum, and those are great. But we are also home to Forest Park (4x the size of Grant Park), a (free) science museum, a (free) history museum, and the largest outdoor musical theater in the country (which has entire sections that are free). While we don't have anything like the Field Museum or the Shedd Aquarium, having lived in and visited other midwestern cities like Indy, KC, Nashville, and Milwaukee, St. Louis' cultural landscape is unique for its size. I also would ask that you take a look at how the crime statistics are calculated. Our ranking is an unfortunate side effect of the way the city is structured. The city's boundaries were set and frozen in 1876. This has the effect of making St. Louis city proper (as you rightly point out in the video) a small sliver of the metro area. Because crime statistics are calculated as a proportion of the city proper, St. Louis appears to be more violent than any city in the nation. If you took only the most inner-city ring of any city, you would likely see a proportional increase in crime. That's not to say that we don't have a problem with crime. It needs to be addressed, for sure. I just hope that we can find a better way of talking about it and identifying the real issues that we face. Thanks again for the video!
Rob Krosley I just wanted to comment on your pizza thing, as I St.Louisian, I don’t think either cities pizza style is very good, compared to New York style pizza for example. I personally would prefer STL style pizza over Chicago style pizza, just because it’s easier to eat.
@@henrynarkiewicz8778 no way. St Louis pizza is disgusting. Provel cheese is the worst. It's so hard to find good pizza in St louis. You have to go Racanellis for NY style or Pi for Chicago style. Just because you don't know how to eat it, doesn't make it a bad pizza. St louis should just burn down every Imo's pizza and just be happy with their awesome BBQ.
@@henrynarkiewicz8778 worse!?!? No freaking way. St louis pizza shouldn't be fed to animals. You can have your opinion about Chicago pizza, no matter how wrong you are. But there is no excuse for st louis pizza. I would rather rip my tongue out and throw it in the river, than eat a st louis pizza.
Rob, I also questioned the crime stats. Because most stats are pulled from the city population it skews our stats immensely. People often forget that when they look at St. Louis.
True, both Saint Louis and Chicago are situated at a periphery of their respective states. But Greater Chicago comprises about 65% of the population of IL (its mayor is actually better known than the state's governor) whereas Greater STL comprises a much smaller population base - and some of that is located in IL, diminishing its influence within MO even further.
First of all, great video! I've lived in St. Louis most of my life and visit Chicago often and have family there and needless to say, both cities have their ups and downs. I think one of the biggest misconceptions that people doing these videos and even national statistical comparisons, fail to take into account that what thr city of St. Louis is NOT a part of any county In the state of Missouri and is it's own independent entity whereas Chicago is part of Cook County, Kansas City is part of Jackson County and so on. None of the population, crime, economic statics include St. Louis County, which in itself is about 1.2 million people! Those of us in St. Louis know that is still what is considered St. Louis, but people outside of here only use the raw data which doesn't take this into account. St. Louis is one of only about 3 cities in the US that is set up like this... With that being said, the other cities I assume, have the numbers from the county the are a part of included in their numbers etc. My guess is alot the comparison numbers would change if it were straight apples to apples. Then again, after doing some quick research, I'm not even sure how the data a gathered to achieve certain population numbers. I've seen population numbers range from 2.7 mil for Chicago, to almost 10 mil (Chicago land)? What are the boundaries used for cities etc..? Oh the questions!!😁🙄
City comparisons are just that unless it’s county(ies) or metro. For example, a St. Louis city, Chicago city, Oklahoma City city comparison would compare the municipal city area of each despite STL not being in a county, Chicago being part of Cook county, and OKC being in part of Oklahoma, Canadian, and Cleveland counties. Metro and county would call it out or you’d be able to clearly figure it out (like area or population or a stat you aware should be). It’s clear he’s comparing city most of the time b/c he uses 2.7m for Chicago but says metro whenever a stat is so. I agree though that STL city vs county needs to be called out for any county comparisons since STL city is not part of STL county. Good call but I think he got it right in this film.

Which two non-American places should I compare next? Which do you like better, St. Louis or Chicago?
Montreal and Toronto
Mr. Beat Compare Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana next. Both are about directly in the middle of their state, both have almost the exact same population. They're less than 200 miles from each other both off of I-70 and they are both state capitals!
São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro? I'd like to see your take on that...
Kinshasa and Brazzaville
You could take "New Cairo" recent idea and do one with purposely-built capitals in the last 100 years, like Islamabad and Brasilia.
Or maybe St. Petersburg and Washington, if you are going to another time-frame.
Chicago is basically a compact sized New York while St.Louis is more of old school historic city.
Chicago is a cleaner and less glamorous NYC. Also the people in Chicago are generally nicer too.
Chicago's very historic.
Having visited St. Louis before and thoroughly enjoyed my time there, especially at City museum and the southern neighborhoods, I think it's important to appreciate each city relativistically, and not in absolute terms. I think St. Louis is trying its best to improve, so no need to put it down.

The areas you missed:
Segregation deeply hurt St.
Adam
Quality comment, Adam. Thanks for sharing. I'm pinning this.
And perhaps that true but let any Chicagoan go to the Central West End and they will not believe the staggering opulence of the homes there and their relatively cheap prices.
bigoldhouses.blogspot.com/2014/08/oz-in-st-louis.html
And though this particular section of the Central West End is gated and well preserved you can easily buy one of these types of houses relatively cheap all over the city.

I am from ballwin if you know where that is

@@cookiemonsterso3950 Just opinion sista.
@Don Comer keep your fantasies out of this.

It could have been the size of Chicago if they were constantly shooting themselves in the foot.
chicago is my kind of town st. louis isn't so bad either
born in l.a. i have never understood this " my city is better than your city " idea. i hope to visit your cities someday
I'm from St. Louis and I totally agree
Miami is better than all ur cities... Jk

Louis.
That's fair
You missed two things about St. Louis. Forest Park is the largest metropolitan park in America, larger than Central Park in New York. Also, St. Louis has the most free attractions of any city in America. St. Louis pizza sucks so hard, so I can't knock Chicago for having better pizza, but also The Rams left, we didn't get rid of them.

St louis should just burn down every Imo's pizza and just be happy with their awesome BBQ.
devildart I agree St.Louis style pizza is disgusting, I just think Chicago style is worse.
Louis.
This is why I should've subscribed to City Beautiful a long time ago.
One of my favorite channels on TH-cam!
Something to say about us St. Louisians is that we love to tell people where we are from.
St. Louis, like the rest of Missouri, had great potential, but squandered their opportunity and left it to decay.
Speak for yourself. Missourians happen to lobe Missouri and the state has way more natural wonders than Illinois
The rams were never a stl team. They came from La and returned to la. Stl didn’t “lose the rams” they were just an embarrassment
you are absolutely a 🤡
True, both Saint Louis and Chicago are situated at a periphery of their respective states.
I always say that too. Not fair to compare.
