Hello Friends! Recently I braved the cross-country trip to New England to go visit my buddy, Morgan Donner. While there, we decided to try a little solar dying with some fast acting products Morgan found and it was super fun! This project is for sure a favorite and I'd recommend it for both kids and adults! I hope you enjoy the adventures!

Five stars experience, would highly recommend doing this with friends! Especially cool ones like Noelle ❤
💖💖💖💖
I love Mr. MD's saw shirt! The half & half design is so fab!
And your patchwork one is a real tour de force! I would love a dress in that style!
I love that even after being incarcerated together for days in a tiny ship cabin, you two are still such good friends. I actually think that might be a good addition to pre-marriage counseling. lol
Hahahaha we just treated that like a 5 day sleep over 🤣😂 Morgan is truly one of the most fun and chill people. She’s very easy to get along with!
I love how Morgan was being a gremlin in the background shots
She is a silly bean 💖
@@Costuming_Drama she is indeed! She’s my favorite silly bean TH-camr
Mine too
Oh I do NOT need another hobby! You sirens, you, why did you show me how much fun this is???
Ahahahaha I hope you make awesome things!
I sew, quilt, spin, knit, weave and embroider--and now, apparently I sun-dye too☺
@@wangofree I know how you feel . The one of a kind fabric you can create .
It's like the moment when you see Buffy crossover with Angel. That's how I feel with singing Noelle and Morgan in the same video. I love it. I want to see more of it. But it shakes my consciousness
🤣😂🤣
A WILD MORGAN APPEARS!!
The sun print @16:50 was my favorite. However the saw pattern sun print was both hilarious and cute. Mr. Morgan Donner could make one for each of tool. I would pay for a video of him going to a Home Depot store wearing an imprinted tool, nails or a hinge tee shirt then finding a sales rep while pointing to himself, "I want a ____ ____ this size."
Hahahaha that would be hilarious!
Imagine with peacock feathers, and lace and some beads, it would look so interesting! 🌸🖤
That would be cool!
This gives me the idea to make pillow cases for my dnd group but use the sun dye to add "stamps" like character names and motifs
Heck yeah! That would be awesome!!!
A quilter friend told me about washing cotton fabrics with color catchers. I have used when ice dying and it works great. There is no color bleed.
Oh I love those things!
We love a Collab moment 👏🏽
It makes me so happy to see costubers as friends
Well, I have good news for you! Most of us are friends!
The patchwork/multicolour one reminds me of the Elmer the Elephant books. The colours and pattern are similar ☺️
I took it for my own and I love it!
What a fun time had. I enjoyed Morgan's other piece on solar dying. I just didn't want blue. This sounds & looks fun.
Yes! Try it!!
Loving reading Red Side Story. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a grown up version of The Giver series with a heaping of British humor
This is the collab I didn't know I needed in my life but on my gosh you two are the BEST!!! I love your goofiness!
💖💖💖
Now you need to do some tie dye.
Agreed!
Wow! I love both of you with the attitude of " this looks cool!, lets do it." Overboard!😊❤
Oooohhhh, this really calls out to my inner chaos goblin... even more than tie-dyeing. I'm gonna have to tell my mom about this stuff!
It’s very fun!
I like this collaborative, relaxed style of video - really fun to just come along for the ride to see what happens!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@Costuming_Drama Thanks Noelle! That was very meta 😆 You responded so quickly, I was still watching you on the video when I got your message!
🤣
Miss you two both, glad to see you shenanigans as always. The only dying I have ever done is curcumin soak for a renfair outfit, the color was desirable when wet however dried patchy. Love your maple leaf one 😍
Thank you!! Dyeing is such a weird art form! It’s for sure a “hope for the best” sutuation!
@@Costuming_Drama also I wanted to mention that I am reading a book series from Nichole Van called House of Oak, I am on book 3 called Clandestine. So far I enjoyed them all, 2 more to go after this. I just discovered the TV series version of American Gods by Neil Gaiman that is both fascinating and disturbing on some level.
Thanks for the video ladies!Quilters would eat this up!
I actually really love the different values that you got with the translucent stars, @morgandonner! And the wrinkles that look like dust trails on yours are so fun, Noelle. I do like how the coral one turned out, but I think it would definitely have been stunning in the more burnt orange that you were going for. I think my personal favorites (just aesthetically) are the japanese maple leaves and the one with all the little bits of Morgan's garden.
I've always loved solar printing and cyanotype, so it's really exciting to see it starting to have a resurgence. I'm going to have to get the materials out again soon and do it while we still have good weather!
Thank you! I hope you have great fun if you get going with it again!
That looks like a lot of fun! Something I will keep in mind to try with the grandson.
I finished Nalini Singh’s new book, it was epic. It’s an amazing series which I recommend to everyone but start at the beginning. It’s well worth the time!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check it out!
I’m rereading the whole series leading up to the new release. Love her books!
That looks like so much fun! I'd seen some cyanotype videos, but didn't know you could do it with other colours.
Oh it’s super fun and so fast! Do recommend!!
That looked so doable and fun!!!!!🎉🎉🎉
It really is!
Looks like fun and a good time, but I'm not supposed to be adding any more hobbies till I finish working on a few ufo's, so no telling hubby about the rug stuff, 😂, hope you had a lovely time away with Abby.❤
Ugh now I must do this! lol looks super fun!
It was! Highly recommended and easy one day project!!
This came out so well! Live it I will try this on a smaller scale.😊❤
This just made me smile the whole time 😊 I’m glad I waited until after my niece went home to watch… this is right up her alley but I’d like to try it w/o a kid “helping” first! 😅
Hahaha yeah, that would probably be for the best
this looked like so much fun! it reminded me of how much I miss developing prints in a darkroom -- I think I just might have to set aside a sunny weekend to play around with this.
Please do and let me know how it goes!
How fun! This is something I could totally do. Thank you, Ladies! PS Morgan, your hair is looking phenomenal. It grows so fast!
Ahhhhh! Two of my favourite costubers together! :) I think I might try this activity with my niece.
You should! It’s super fun!!
This video was fun! I hope your feeling better regarding your long covid
Getting better slowly! 💖
Love the “Coraline” bandana. Never tried this, but it looks fine. My friend wrote on Exploding Kittens. Thanks for the support. Finished season 2 of Interview with the Vampire. Really good. They released a trailer for season 3 yesterday. To the end.
Ooo I need to watch that!!
@@Costuming_Drama You should!
I'm glad y'all had fun.. That does look like it can be very fun and creative. Living in the middle of the Valley of the Sun, I could possibly do that in my living room (I have a west facing window without an awning), though I think I'd have to prepare it in my bathroom or closet because well....valley of the sun....
Today was the last day of the summer reading challenge.. Collectively, those participating in my county read over 100 million minutes! (County-wide goal of 90 million). I contributed almost 28k :) I haven't started my reward book yet as life has been crazy, but the upside of the craziness is that in about 4 more weeks or so, I can start picking back up my knitting and crocheting again. I'm so looking forward to it! I had my left hand surgery two weeks ago and the stitches taken out about 2 days ago. (while I'm completely fine with needles, stitches leave me a bit woozy when they come out and I also had my ulnar nerve decompressed on my left arm).
Anyways! I'm glad the two of you were able to get up to shenanigans and that Mr Morgan Donnaer had fun, too.
Yeah, a bathroom prep station might be the way... or maybe a garage? And yay book challenge! I'm glad that your surgery seems to have gone well and that you can get back to it soonish!!
Never been so early! Can’t wait to watch you guys make stuff!
Wanted to do this since Morgan's original video. Thanks for posting your experience!!
You should! This one is even easier!!
I am going to show this to a friend this weekend. this is definitely for sure going to be a future project I already have an Idea for mine. I liked the effect the one that had a few wrinkles had so I'm going to try and maybe purposely wrinkle my bandana fabric then add skull shapes with a black color. so when it dries it hopefully has those little wrinkle lines and skulls.
That sounds awesome!!!
Love the projects and testing videos! The examples and key learnings were great. I'm currently doing some complex bag making and re-reading Wheel of Time.
I need to read that!!!
That looked like so much fun! Really enjoyed this one. :) Oldest kiddo and I are patterning out a cosplay of Alistair. :)
Yay! And that sounds great!
Watching this, breastfeeding my baby daughter and already planning this as a birthday activity several years down the line 🤩 thanks for showing your experiments and inspirations. I also liked Mr. Morgan Donner‘s tool based ones.
Reminds me of my mother’s Easter egg dyes, where she painted wax ornaments on eggshells with a needle and dyed them, sometimes in several dye colours, with some wax off for the second dye, resulting in some ornaments white, some in the first colour and some in the second colour.
I wonder if this would work like that, too? Though, probably with a rinse/wash in between?
Morgan used to do egg dyeing! And yes, I think it would work like that to some extent!
Thinking about light fasting of colour dye. I guess one would have to read the instructions .as a creative person myself .sometimes I just want to do without reading. Just like jumping into the deep end of a swimming pool . without knowing how to swim. 😁
So fun ❤
You two are so fun ☺️
Hahahaha thanks!
WOW!
I did this years and years ago as a kid.
Really interesting experiences. You can definitely use cyanotype wet, and try adding washing up liquid bubbles for more interesting effects.
The time of day you do your sun printing makes a difference too. Closer to midday will be more intense with paler colours later in the day
Ooo that’s interesting!
Fun experiment! You got some interesting prints and they're totally unique. Also i like your taco breakfast shirt Noelle ❤ i was eating pizza for breakfast watching this 😂
Hahahah thanks! It’s from one of my favorite taco joints in LA!
i absolutely love the salmon one with the japanese maple leaves! my favorite color and my favorite tree!
Ah thanks!
I would totally do this.
So much fun.
Oo I'm so excited to try this, I have a bottle of black to play with!
I just finished the Rook & Rose series by M.A. Carrick and I loved it! It's got different magic systems and political drama. 10/10 would recommend listening or reading
Noted! I will add it to my list of books to check out! Thank you! 💖
Always fun to see what you and your friends get up too! 😁👍
I might start teaching textile crafts next school term and if I can get the dyes over here I'll definitely do this with my class! This looks like so much fun
It’s really great and totally low stakes!
Fun times :)
I used transparencies and me photography from a trip to Puerto Rico.
That’s so fun!!!
Thinking of possible ways of weighing stuff down for this, I bet a poster frame (which can be very inexpensive) would be great! A music stand would also be a great asset for those of us who live in apartments and have small balconies.
Those are both great ideas!!
Well the video answered a question I had recently but couldn’t be bothered to google 😅
(Wondered if other colours could be done but figured not based on the name cyanotype and that I’d only ever seen blues)
That looks super fun. :) I just watched all the Santurary: A witches tale. Which is from the same creator as A discovery of Witches (also really good). Reading: I'm just biding my time until my favorite author releases her new book in a few weeks. Then it will be time to go back to work. Hoping that I start to feel better soon, I'm not exactly sure what's wrong might be a bad tooth (going to get it sorted Monday) might be a sinus infection, might be other things. I just finished two 40s dresses and then had to tear my sewing room apart so the electrician could come do work (we do not speak of this electrician he was a crook we have since had a better man come out). But its been a week, and I am ready for it to be over.
HUGS! I’m glad it’s over, that you got a better guy, and that you are gonna go get your issue sorted tomorrow! I hope you feel better soon! 💖
@@Costuming_Drama Thanks hon. I know you haven't been feeling the greatest either. I do hope you start to feel better soon.
Thank you 💖💖
Looks so fun!!
It is! You should try it!
I think it would be interesting to try layering the dyes but you'd have to carefully replace the resist objects for each layer of dye. But I suppose the rinse process after each dye would get tedious. I'm watching Brooklyn 99 which is funny and clever and surprisingly heartwarming at times. I'm also watching a Kdrama called Sweet Home which has a lot of flaws but is worth a watch if you like zombie apocalypse type shows and subtitles.
I bet it would be awesome with wax resist!!
💜💜💜💜
I wonder if you painted the veins on the leafs with an opaque pain if that would help them show up.
Oh I’m sure that would help, but would also take forever!
Does it only work on washable fabric? Can it be done on painting canvas? Wonder if my mum coild have adventures with it in her painting
Hmmm maybe? You are supposed to rinse it out very thoroughly to stop the dye from reacting anymore, but I bet you could do that with a hose and some soap….
Wonder if this would work like tie-dye
I would imagine it would but really the only parts that got sun would dye, so it would be kind of a crazy pattern. Maybe that’s a case for doing multiple colors with washes in between! If you do it, lmk what happens!!
I wonder what the pale green maple leaves on tannish fabric would look like if you dyed with blue over it and maple leaves in random patterns over the first one...Or would that just look like a big mess?
Well, it might be awesome, depending on the placement of the next set of leaves, I think…
I wonder if you washed it with a mordant what would happen
I have also been wondering this!
If you like hard SF, I highly recommend reading the Liaden Universe®️ books by Lee & Miller
Thank you! I will check it out!
