Hey Justin. Love your style and lessons. After 28 years without a guitar, my family got me a Gretsch G2627T and a Fender Champion 20 amp for Christmas. I'm following along your lessons and having a great time
I love that. Hope you're still enjoying the Gretsch! FYI, I have a new members only guitar lesson section here on TH-cam, specifically teaching my style of playing. This is the best pedal video on TH-cam. Good information on how the pedals work and how to use them in a way that makes sense and has no feeling of it being a advertisement for a company.
I really love listening to you play and when you break it down and explain everything just makes listening to you that much better. I like learning how you get the sound you desire. Awesome stuff.
👍🏻 Nice to see some instruction on EQ and compression. Shaping the sound with these is i.m.o. one of the best ways to get 'that tone' you're after. I think these are often overlooked on a board.
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I’ve been playing for years but always found some pedals too confusing. This is a really clear explanation of how EQ & compression work and how to set them up.
As Amazing as you make this sound, the real magic is the knowledge that you're sharing. It's literally worth its weight in gold to me! Thanks for all you do
Great demo. The EQ difference was like trying to heard from a distance vs talking into someone's ear and the compression like a cry in the wilderness vs the voice of authority. I never bought those pedals because I didn't know what to do with them other than fiddle around without having a goal in mind but now I have a better grasp of their purpose.
This guy has a warehouse of golden guitars. He goes around challenging guitar players betting a golden guitar each time. Ole Johnny is the only one ever beat him😎🔥
Everything that modifies the tone goes before the amp, or if you're using a sim, between the di and amp signal chain. First, use an eq on the DI signal to balance your pickups and get the raw sound you want. Justin uses compression next, but I use a tube screamer with gain set to 0, volume all the way up and then mess with the tone knob to get whatever overall tone I'm aiming for. After this I'll set up the amp to the sweet spot, then go back to the di signal chain and add in crunch, fuzz of distortion to get the sound I want. As a general rule I try to have all my processing done before the signal hits the amp. That way you get really rich harmonics, and the volume and tone controls on your guitar can be used to craft a really insane number of variations on the fly.
Even though there doesn't appear to have been too much twiddling of the knobs (they are all pretty much around the 50% mark), even a cloth ears like me could hear the difference. Also, thanks for the incredibly clear descriptions of what cutting the lows/compression/etc actually does; made sense. I'm inspired now to try EQ and compression plugins on my guitar tracks.
I am amazed at your knowledge and experience with getting that perfect sound coming through the amp . I have picked up quite a few tips from you watching your tutorials , thank you and cheers from NZ .
Very nice! Subtlety, moderately, tuned to a fine discernment. How many YT guitarheads are screaming "this is all BS because the knobs don't go to 11" and "there isn't enough fuzz because you can still hear the fundamental note!"? 🙄 By the way, this also works for a $300 guitar!
I'm old school and know since age 13 how frustrating it is to get "that" sound. Sure looks easy now. One of the best demonstrations I have seen. This WILL encourage me to play, even at 64. Gotta get out my Led Zeppelin vinals...Maybe some Ry Cooder, mix it up. Thanks man.
Love your lessons, Justin. You're a wonderful natural teacher. Everything explained so in-depth and in a way that is easy to digest and understand. Thank you so much! The examples of turning the dials up and down from the position you had them was so helpful to me to hear the difference.
Thanks so much Patricia! FYI, I have a new members only guitar lesson section here on TH-cam, specifically teaching my style of playing. If you're interested in guitar lessons, you can check it out by clicking the "Join" button under this video, or this link: th-cam.com/users/justinjohnsonlivejoin
Man , in this days I' m training hard to play fingerpicking like R. L. Burnside , I was a pick guy and I can train my fingerpicking only on the acoustic cuz I'm trash and on the electric I destroy the strings lol.. But more I do it more I feel that the tone is 99% in the hands , the pedals are a tool for getting consistency on the tone , very useful , not mandatory .
Good info Justin. I could never find a decent sounding compression sustainer pedal, so switched to using a booster for solos instead. I use an Ulbrick Megalodon clean boost which is awesome but I may have to look into a sustain pedal for solos as well. Cheers.
Sweet, pretty sure you could adjust the thermostat in your house throw a rock in to the air, move the lawn mower 2 feet, tilt a chair back and make the atmosphere sound like a smokey blues bar without even having an instrument near you.
Silly question: Where did you get that creepy marienette doll for your pipe organ accompaniment in the Virtuo demo video. I looked online and cant find anything close. Is your little guy a custom made puppet?
Justin! Where are the comp and eq in the chain? Are they right after the drive as they appear in the video? Or are they in the effects-loop of the amp?
Hey Justin. Great stuff as always man! Love it! Just a question, do you place the comp before or after the drive? And where exactly in the chain is the eq? 🙏❤️
Excellent video 👌 The blend button really makes the difference There they are 👉...🐿🐿🐿 ☝ i think so far you are the man with the most squirrels of all time, i can only congratulate you 🤷♂️ ❤ 🐈
Where do you keep the tone on your guitar when setting the sound? Do you leave room to adjust the tone up or down from the instrument or is your tone at 10 treble?
Wow man it all sounded great to me. But I'm just a twenty year home garage hack. Play it like ya mean it. Love your tips but probably wasted on me and my peavy practice amp. Love ya stuff just the same.
Play for a year and then destroy your instrument. If you're in tears then you should keep going. Sometimes you don't realize the real meaning of something until you don't have it anymore. You either give up forever or stick with it forever Works 100% You Rock Darren 🐈
I have a question for ya bro. my electric guitar shocks me every now and then. And my volume knob goes from off to loud no in between. Can I get your advice on what to do to fix this? Thank you
You need to make sure your pickups and pots are grounded to the bridge. Try re-soldering the connections. With the volume knob, it could be a bad capacitor or it could be a crappy pot with no audio taper
It's happened... Now, you may not remember... But I have too. * [And you got 2 guitars; that are needed in a couple of songs. They are onse you made i think.] So, it had to be the first time I went to new orleasns. It was near the morning. Decader... Anyway I must have asked about a smoke... [don't know if you do... can't recall] Anyways this womenc omes up to "us"... [I think she gave me a smoke.] Then she says; that you have a song writen about you. About how you play the blues in new orlenas [Do you? Anyways you are getting that, as of now.] She also mentioned; thatI would write a song about a gun... Thats happening, You've been there so long. And this new music thing... it's a package. a brand... maybe more...Alot... And so far, i got 2 songs+1 [3] your in... And the plans are of the grids... so it's differant... I'll try emails.
As someone who is picking up the guitar later in life, your channel has been a huge inspiration and a lot of help. Thanks, man!
Man, you know right before Justin walks in the room them guitars be talkin’ to each other like “ssshhhh, there he comes!!”

Really useful how/why demonstration.
The treble with the cut sounded wonderful!
Thanks much. It took me about 7 - 8 years of playing to even understand what is a guitar tone. I didn't even know what a pedal was.
Sustain.. my favorite effect in Hendrix's piece: Born Under A Bad Sign
I just love that instrumental relaxation.
This is incredibly helpful. Thank you. It helps to have an explanation for why rather than just seeing someone turn a dial and say it’s good there.
Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I’ve been playing for years but always found some pedals too confusing. This is a really clear explanation of how EQ & compression work and how to set them up.

Good demo of the way to use the pedals to enhance but not obliterate the sound. Nice wall of straps (?) back there. That's a collection. :-)
I just ordered a Spark because of your review, love your channel!

Significant difference, sounded much better with the pedals. Excellent advice and demo. Thanks

And on the 7th day... he created the legend that was to become the master Justin Johnson and it was good.

Pretty hard to keep up the sustain playing slide without a compressor though,it's night and day
cut a smidge of highs, tighten the lows, add some mids, dirt and compression? sounds like tube screamer
Justin In the morning !🎸

Awesome video!! 💥🤘🔥🎶🎸
Hey Justin do you play any of ZZ Top blues numbers? like "A Fool For Your Stockings", "Blue Jean Blues" etc.
Grazie
......and most of us aren't experts like you clearly are, the change in shape of the notes is quite apparent though.

Plus that guitar has how many different combinations of pickups to boot?
Guitar God .
Wow, this is fantastic, the explanations are much appreciated. I consider myself "Edgeamacated". Very Cool! Thanks Justin.
you check handwound pickups? you check amp one from blou guitar? i like when you play nicest sounds on your guitar
Nice a Tone video
....WoW, good lesson in gizmo's Justin. Might have to save my pennies and get me some of that.

Maybe I missed it but did you mention what order OD, Comp and EQ are in?
I have it in this order: EQ -> COMP -> OD
Is that guitar the one the pick ups spin to others

It's got 60 cycle hum in it.
Where do you keep the tone on your guitar when setting the sound? Do you leave room to adjust the tone up or down from the instrument or is your tone at 10 treble?
It depends on the guitar and the song, but 75% toward the treble is a good place to start, and then you can fine tune throughout to taste.
@@justinjohnsonlive Thank you, Justin!
Not Been Getting Notified,Gonna Unsub and Resub..Great Video..🤘🖤🔥
What is a chorus pedal used for, I've had one for a while but never really explored it like you would.
