      @Mewse1203 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You want to know what really got me at that same age? It sounds stupid, but for a 11-12 year old in the early nineties it was super profound.
      I was at this church camp thing very reminiscent of a Boy Scout like group meeting, and this guy gave a sermon after dinner. Since we were all young people there this guy decided to give the sermon on how anything that takes your focus away from God is evil. It didn't matter what you thought of it being good or bad. If you thought about it instead of God, it was evil.
      Now, had he stopped there, I maybe wouldn't have put 2 and 2 together nor had the reaction I did, but he gave examples, and one of those examples piased me off and made the questions I already had go into high gear.
      He gave a few, but the examples he gave that struck me were what he called the "Pooper Rangers" and the "Teeny Neutered Mutant turtles."
      So I'm 11-12 in 1994-95. The HEIGHT of the Power Rangers and Turtlemania,. I had a rough childhood, and I really retreated in my Fandom for both. They were my only salvation when shit was hard. If they could overcome the bad things when it was hard, then so could I....and he's saying they're evil.
      As a kid, that made no sense to me. How could they be evil. They FOUGHT evil.
      Like I said, it sounds stupid, but for me at that age, it really struck me in a very hard place. I already had questions that pastors and such couldn't answer or would say, "You will understand when you're older." Combine that with insulting the only joy I had in my life by calling it evil, and that speech began my journey in a real way.

    The mindset of folks like the caller is, "I deny reality and insert my own, then without evidence I expect everyone around me to believe my reality is the true reality". This by definition is self induced mental illness, and the the can lead to the very anxiety, depression, and other symptoms, caused by the chemical emballances and other issues that underly what we usually consider mental illnesses.

      Matt would shut you down so hard. Religion is as much delusional mental illness as political views or sports fanaticism.
      Stop using the concept of mental illness and equating religion with it. It can in fact lead to inducing or worsening mental illness but religion itself does not a mental illness make because that requires specific clinical criteria. Religions can also be a positive against mental illness, although the particulars of the religions are not necessarily the benefitting aspect and you can get there secularly. Psychologists are more expensive than priests though.
      It’s this nonsense that makes atheists look bad... and insults mental illness’ seriousness, which I care more about.

    It's astounding how many believers can't give a clear, concise, and instantaneous answer to how they justify their belief in God. Notice that when atheists are asked how they justify their disbelief they don't have to tap-dance around the question, tell an autobiography, or go off on an epistemological tangent. If you can't give an immediate, well thought out response then you haven't adequately thought about it enough and don't care whether your beliefs are actually true. They aren't being asked to justify Coke being better than Pepsi..they're being asked to justify a belief that they ostensibly organize their life around.

    what Christians don't understand is that among many gods, their god is not the god of humanity but the god of the Jews, Christians just adopted him and wrote a new book, tweaking it here and there, changing the cards on the table and called it the new testament. In reality he was the god of the Jews, again not of humanity, the fact is that he was concerned ONLY about the Jews, and couldn't care less about everyone else in the world.

    Stacy does it again. Feelings do not inform us about the outside world. Feelings do not give us anything beyond OUR personal reaction to outside stimulus. I once had one of those mystical experiences but realized it was my emotions that left the impression. I would get into trouble when I thought the feelings had somehow been put in me from "god", rather than realizing it was my feelings, as good as they felt, that I was trying to use to discover "truth". Those feelings could tell me nothing but how I was reacting to the outside world.

      I'd say the opposite. The thing that did the most to convince me to be an atheist is the religious education classes here in the UK. I was taught religion in school, but I was taught a wide variety of religions. We looked at the holy books of half a dozen religions, were encouraged to investigate their philosophies and histories and even had several of their religious leaders come in and talk about them. They were taught in a balanced fashion, we were not taught one was true and encouraged to look into them further. At the start of the year about 2/3 of the class were religious. At the end 2/3 were not, and I know at least a couple of the remainder were only claiming that because they came from strict Muslim families and another was a JW who might kick them out.

    Excellent logical debunk of the common apologetic that "just because something [reality] isn't 100% proveable, therefore that's just the same as my faith". The caller tries to equalize two things that intrinsically have vastly different probabilities. One (reality) presents constantly and consistently, and with no really viable alternative interpretation. The other (religious faith) doesn't present, other than (for this caller) in a feeling, and is subject to vastly different interpretations (is it just a feeling - a neurological pattern, or is some other religion actually causing that feeling, or is it a conditioned response that's been drilled into the caller due to indoctrination ...?). Matt (and Tracie as well) really respond to this with great logic. This is a good watch - beginning to end!
