- Wait, so that "former hell of blood pools" Koishi mentioned in ULiL wasn't a one-off line? And it's related to the oil because "oil is the blood of the earth"? Talk about a long setup.
I like how everyone talks about oil as a "cursed liquid" and something that can bring great wealth but will bring great misfortune. Between AFiEU, WBaWC, and this, ZUN has really been getting to take potshots at issues in the real world.
Also that is a great reprise of the title theme.

The soundtrack comes from 東方剛欲異聞 ～ 水没した沈愁地獄 (Touhou Gouyoku Ibun ~ Submerged Hell of Sunken Sorrow), the 17.5th Touhou game. Instead of a fighting game, the game is a single-player beat-'em-up based around fighting enemies while collecting water to perform hyper attacks.

The reveal that the petroleum isn't actually oil but literal blood had me reminded of one of the greatest movie exchanges of all time:

Yachie, Saki and Yuuma are all prey animals to their respective spirits they lead over. Coincidence?
This logic extends to the Primate Spirits as well: Keiki is a human and she creates Haniwas which are supposed to depict AIs. AIs have a theme of overthrowing their human creators at some point.

If a god is explainable and possible to understand by a human it is no God.

Reading the description, holy crap, you're right! Koishi actually did mention the Hell of Blood Pools years back (since HM), and it was in relation to Murasa (saying she drowned in it in HM and visits from time to time in ULiL), so that actually explains why she's in the game! Wasn't expecting this lore tidbit about Murasa, but I sure appreciate it.
