I remember watching a video that is sort of connected to this. Their explanation is that the male Hippo dont want to take care of a child that is not from them and the mother Hippo cant bear another child if they already have one. So, the only solution for the male Hippo to have an offspring from that female hippo is to just kill the baby Hippo. The mother tries to protect its child tho, but the male hippo always succeeds...
Basically its like bringing your baby to a group of serial killers.
The hippo and the dolphin one was super sad. They wasn't being a bad mother. They loved their baby and tried to protect her baby. They wanted to introduce her baby and didnt expect their baby to get killed. They tried so hard to protect it. 😢

Young people don't want to have these little bastards so pregnancy rates have fallen all over the world, including China. So they've relaxed the restrictions, because young people are supposed to pay for elderly retirements, it's all about making sure you have enough people in the work force so rich people always have some scrub to clean toilets for not enough money.

They now have a much larger problem, since they traditionally use to kill off/abort all the baby girls in favour of male children they have an massive overhang of males, resulting in to few females for a large majority of males, a widespread psychological depression and the highest young male suicide rate on the planet. In addition to that their population may still be high but will dramatically shrink around 2050. Going back for 1.3 billion to approximately 800 million hand in hand with a massive aging of society. Considering all that the one child policy was a catastrophic failure for the Chinese society.
