I have just finished carving my first serious project. My 20 year old cat was put down yesterday. Recently, we got rid of a stump in the yard. I carved her from some of the wood, but parts of the wood was soft. I need to sand a bit more, and paint her, but I'm generally pleased with how she has turned out to this point.
I just started carving wood myself, and I will say that when you get lost in the project, time stands still. I look at it like we are wood archaeologists. We slowly uncover the image to reveal the treasure hidden under all the wood chips. Nice work man.
Wow, Eric! I wasn't expecting something like this. That came out super nice. I really love the idea of the tree in relief in the cross. Your daughter will be so proud to have that some day. Thanks much for sharing, Bill
Such a beauiful work of art! I love the tree of life cross that you carved for me and Jerry! It's something I will always cherish! Thank you so much for being willing to make it for us! Your work is amazing! God bless!
That was a great presentation. It will inspire a lot of people to try carving. I do some whittling, animals mostly. I have a relief carving project in mind, and feel more confident going in having seen your video. Also, I'm all about Woodcraft. Nice, helpful people and terrific products. Very well done.
Thank you!! I love the people at Woodcraft. I've visited many stores over the years and always had a great experience. I've not tried carving animals yet but would like to learn some day. The face and eyes look so difficult to learn.
@@CraftsmansLegacy yeah eyes can be challenging. My animals are all kinda cartoony, I've used painted map pins or just painted eyes. My point initially though was that your presentation was a perfect mix of how to and background and entertainment. I'm honored that you replied.
I really like your video and I hope I can learn from you I love the way you speak very clearly and you explain very well you are pretty awesome and a great teacher thank you I will watch all your videos and learn from you are easy to listen to and follow stats what I have been looking for in a teacher and your learning as well which is totally awsome as well. Thank you
Only thing I am carving out is time... I always believe when carving wood it "speaks" to you what it wants to be. Maybe it's a reflection of yours or the tree's soul... Deep...
Great video, loved it. Just wish you would have explained more and showed what you were doing since you called it a Wood carving for beginners. But none the less it looked awesome and turned out even better.
Totally agree with the first part of your message, no techniques explained etc. not sure I agree with painting and covering up, of what is, a beautiful material, wood. But this is subjective. I was hoping for a, more of a tutorial video, or at least follow what was happening 👍🏻🙂🌳 Best wishes :-)
The point was well made that enjoying the process is key. When I began carving I enjoyed making wood chips. It didn't matter how good the finished product was. As time went by the finished product got better. I like that but it is still the process of making wood chips that I like most. Nice cross and video. Thumbs up!
Awesome job Eric! I can so relate to you and your art. You have inspired me to start my own TH-cam channel and to film my projects. You have had quite an impression on me. Consider me a loyal fan. New subscriber.
Well, not exactly a for beginner video, we seem to have a difference in what a beginner means. What I got out of this was: 1. Use Basswood 2. Cross with Tree of Life motif 3. Bark and small areas, difficult 4. Fun The work itself looks great. I am wondering how long the project took you from start to finish. (Just the carving part from first blade cut to last.) Good video overall, just not a beginner video.
Thanks for the comment. I had about 20-30hrs in that carving. I'm not super fast by any means! I see where you are coming from but consider myself a beginner and that was my first relief carving. Thanks again!
I miss your show ,it never plays here in N.E. Ohio anymore. But anyway have you considered making your backer board like a lazy susan so you can spin it ?
@@CraftsmansLegacy , oh great! TH-cam videos make chip carving look so easy. I'm especially interested in finding out if you find it easy to learn and become proficient. 💜🌞🌵
Hi I just started carving I have a small set of chisels but I don’t know how to sharpen them When the kit arrived it came with a pice of sandpaper and stick of chalk, Not sure what I’m supposed to do. Any help would be great, love your work
Beautiful piece. I was hoping you would hold it up at the end. True artistry.
Looks GREAT for a first attempt!

I have not! Great idea
how thick was the block wood you used?
1" thick
That is great, ever do dry brushing?
A little. I like the finish of dry brushing and layering
how do you keep the tools sharp?
I hone on leather with some compound. If I need too, I'll use a stone.
Really good project. I want to make a cross like that, but dont want a tree inside it. Does anyone have a idea of what i can make?
You could do anything in the center. Vines, Celtic designs, flowers...
Christensen Bale’s brother?
Have you ever considered chip carving? ❤🌅🌵
I have. Definitely in my future!
@@CraftsmansLegacy , oh great! TH-cam videos make chip carving look so easy. I'm especially interested in finding out if you find it easy to learn and become proficient. 💜🌞🌵
I think I am going around the wrong way I'm carving into solid oak with flat edged chisels, a penknife, buck knife and some tiny chisels.
There's always more than one way to get the job done!
I am usually a whittler.
I have a little experience whittling. I do enjoy it.
my dad got me a carving set but 5 years later he still didnt teach me because he barely has time
I'm sure he will find the time. Maybe do some more research and start practicing.
@@CraftsmansLegacy thank you i will diffently watch your tutorials
Woodcraft
Jet mortising machine half horsepower
Can you please explain?
Not your first carving, but good job.
Thank you. Definitely my first relief carving!!
i'm a beginner wood carver check out the channel you might be surprised as i learned from youtube to carve.
This is a beginner video???
It was my first relief carving. I think it's a good beginner video for relief carving.
Lost me at patience :)
I hear ya! It's a good way to learn to appreciate patience
please remove the music to this video as it only distracts
I didnt learn anything
That's OK. Maybe a different carving video would be more helpful.
