Thankx Mr. Brannaman - thank you so much. I don't use gimmicks as you described them - and it makes me very proud that you a acknowlegde that with your explanation. I use to ride my mares bareback just with a halter on. Usually I ride one and the other is on "leash" aside. Very warm regards from Germany. Hope very much that you will visit our country soon.

I agree. As a young barrel racer and gymkhana eventer so many people wanted to bit up or tie down my horse, I said no doesn't feel right. We went on to win many a championship. I'm so glad Buck speaks out about all the extras that aren't needed. Training the next generation by example is priceless.

And this would be why you are my favorite horseman of all time!!
If you ever get a chance, you should do international clinics... Like in New Zealand. We are lucky enough to have Shannon Carner coming over late this year/early next year, but it would be my dream come true to be able to go to a Buck Brannaman clinic

I'm not experienced. I don't have years under my name. So I asked for advice. Lots told me use this and that. It didn't feel right. So I took what people told me and did my own spin. We get left behind a lot because I'm not using anything to work through problems. I want us to work it out together and come to an understanding why before didn't work. I beat myself up for not being as far along as others but I need to remember that what I'm building with her is powerful. I don't push. We discuss why it didn't work.

Buck has been coming to New Zealand for a while now. He does a South Island and North Island clinic every 2 years. He was here in January so he won't be back until about January 2014.
    Jenny Paterson sponsors him.

Of course the head throwing might simply be due to pain. Most people are not starting fresh young things with supple muscles & no injuries. Many are retraining older horses that come complete with injuries & arthritis, so that riding behind the vertical like that would hurt like hell. Holding onto the head until the tossing stops would not endear the rider to their mount in any meaningful way. Just sayin'....

      There are always exceptions.

A friend from another forum pointed out that if Buck would get rid of the curb and spade bit and not collect behind the vertical he would just about be rid of gimmicks. I do admire all the 'tools' he doesn't use and his quiet way around horses but the curb and hard bits should go the way of the rest of the 'gimmicks'.

it is clear that you are on the journey but you are not "there" yet. Keep riding, it will come.
