This is such a fun idea! Keep in mind though, any paint from pre-1950 almost definitely has lead in it, and there is no safe exposure level for lead. So, its OK to use it, just try to keep from sanding it without a ton of protection. Paint chips dont get into your body without you trying, but paint dust is another story. The worst thing is that lead screws up your brains ability to think remember, and be creative. So im saying this selfishly, because i want a lot more years of great videos from your brain!!
This room reminds me so much of my grandfather"s basement workshop. Most of it was piece-mealed. I close my eyes smell the combination of saw dust, oil and the wood burner he made from a 55 gallon drum exhausted out one of the windows. It was the first time I saw baby food jars screwed to a piece of wood to hold nails, screws, nuts, bolts and washers. That was the mid 60s. I miss the days when he taught me how to build anything from anything...
get a hand plane! you needed one several times in this build and you can get a half decent vintage plane so cheap. I think I restored 3 so far since this year.
You are so talented in repurposing older stuffs and most importantly enjoy the process you describe so clearly. I really enjoy your video and wish I have a man like you who is willing and enjoy doing handy work like you in my life.😝🤣 Hope to see more videos from you .
Harbor Freight tools become your own brand of tools… a worn out motor, a misused purpose (my sheet sander became a scotch brite sheet sander), or post apocalyptic flamethrower.
I feel very similarly about old doors with multiple layers of paint. I have countless photographs of doors like that that I have taken over the years. You expressed the 'unintentional collaboration' of the painters beautifully.
Last summer I moved a door from its original frame to a frame that appeared to be the same size but never had a door. Added the hinges and the jam and realized at the end how out of square the frame was. This was a new construction, too! I think there's a reason doors come pre-hung these days, but you did a great job resizing this door to fit.
Glad to see Daily October starting! I'm gonna join ya but day one is giving the living-space a good cleaning. Making myself ready to do daily work for the month seems vital.
Tip for your wishlist, seeing as you're using an impact driver: Long impact driver drill bits from SabreCut. Get the 152mm ones. I used one of those, a T25, to drive 1500 6x180mm wood screws. The bit was just as fine afterwards. And you'll never have to curse over the bloody bit holder being too wide ever again.
And now all the cans can be shaken at once _without_ needing to stand the shelves back up! I'd recommend crumpling paper into the gap(s) instead of foam, since that (should) be less affected by random solvent drips, and crushing tubes of paper can make a fairly consistent result. . . But admit that I'd probably try the foam first, since I often have scraps of foam.
The paint cans are perfect for the door. They don't weigh that much. I didn't know what you're going to put on the door for storage. But this is a perfect solution to free up some more space. Good job!
You could toss some magnets to stop the cans from rattling when you swing the door if youre putting foam in. Love the tube bumper on the Hyundai it looks absolutely amazing.
Great video. Since VOs are such a part of your video making, it's fun to hear your "experimental" with a "spear" in the middle... when my region has "spare".
I look forward to your uploads every week! Great job on the door I love how sustainable it is and that everything is reused yet you managed to personalise it to your style.
Great start to October 🎉 Using a circular saw on a sacrificial piece of MDF might help you out with that cut. With limited tools a good handsaw and jack plane is your friend.
Looks great but just one thing I am just about to finish up a lead remediation project in my home that was built in 1861. I can almost certainly say that cream colored layer is lead paint. The biggest part of the remediation was 8 doors very similar to your door. All of them had that same cream color on top of the original stain/varnish, followed by a pastel green lead paint and then layer after layer of latex. If you're not worried about the minimal exposure its no biggie, but lead exposure is accumulating so the effects will add up over time. Taking the cans in and out will cause some dust that contains lead to form. Same with opening and closing the door if there are any spots that rub. The epa calls it a friction/impact surface. Me personally, I would just give it a layer or two of clear coat to seal everything up.
Regarding the clamping bonanza when cutting with a circular saw on the longer pieces, did you ever consider getting a sheet of styrofoam or xps foam and throw that on the ground/porch/a sheet of plywood and whatever you need to cut on top of that? I use that trick all the time, since the thick xps foam is plenty enough for the blade to cut into without getting close to whatever is underneath it makes everything on top super sturdy and safe, and no chance of bits flying or coming loose or anything :)
Isn’t that doorhandle upside down? Anyway fun to watch your content as always, though the rusty look isn’t my style it looks great in your space! Omg love the can shelves!!!
I also like building stuff out of trash but as of late I've begun to think about why the stuff was thrown out in the first place. You never know, they could be aspestos contaminated or something.
There is nothing more permanent than a temporary solution that works
Channels with a million subscribers struggle to reach this level of video quality, I'm looking forward to the rest of the month!

Definitely would be a good pick-up I probably could have used one on almost every wood project

You are an old soul and your style is wonderful keep on creating ❤

Love your get-it-done, rasquache sort of style, and getting to watch as your builds and storytelling mature. Good stuff.
2nd hand Jobsite table saw would be your best friend for those long "rip" cuts 😉

Evan when time gives you an actual work shop, you’d do an amazing job!!!
your voice and way of talking is so calming. An audiobook read by you would be so cool!
scrap wood dungeon is a banger
you inspire me to just do things even if they suck and i have no skill in something yet
Loving your content. I highly recommend star-headed screws and using a star bit, it's a game changer.
I always use torx heads. Re-using the old Philips in this project was out of necessity because they were the only long ones I had at the moment.

It looks great Evan! I enjoyed participating in the live.
literally 5 minutes ago i swapped a doornob to have the slope of the other side for my mum because i watched your livestream :)

Keep going you will make it big on YT. Your vids are great
Thank you
“Like most things in this house, the door frame is not straight”
Epic Pappas shoutout
He really did me dirty
I love this man. The ambient music really gives it a vibe
Space is the most precious commodity in my room too😂
Love making something out of nothing myself! Great video. The door now looks almost cellshaded. Very cool. Greetings from Germany!
What’s the oldest thing in your shop?
I have a collection of old bricks I'd bet its one of those
Don’t have one but in my room I have a dresser that used to be my great grandmothers
@@Jpkpmabes My god! Did you use all 4 of your great grandmothers to make that dresser? No wonder you don't keep it in your room!
@@EvanMonsma Having a collection of old bricks is the most Evan thing I've heard. Of course you do haha.
@@Rock-n-Rolo WHAT I’m so confused
Great project and an excellent movie to kick off October!
Goddamn, it's October already. Also, nice door!😁
let's gooooo daily videos!

You could add magnets to the wood and that'll hold the rattle balls if you want a quiet option.
Love it.
HELL YEAH!! OCTOBER IS HERE
hell yeah.
Looks great! Good luck with your October marathon.

Love it!
Now the only logical place to move to adding stuff now is the ceiling 😂💪🏻
Already thought about it hahaha
Neat!
WE GONNA need a video on that car of yours bud!
Will do!
Love it man
Excellent work! I was going to do the daily video challenge but I’ve discovered I misplaced my camera charger 😭
So sick, amazing start to the month
You are the greatest

Good to know- I'm considering stripping all the paint off of it to be safe. But clear coat is a good idea, hadn't thought about that
I know more about lead remediation and epa regulations and guidelines than I ever cared to know XD.
Hype hype Day 1!
Super cool!
Miss you already, Bud.
I was yelling at the screen regarding paint fumes right before this: 7:32

Oh that's a perty door
Is that car yours? It looks sick, I love it.
The door somehow looks straight out of borderlands
Isn’t that doorhandle upside down? Anyway fun to watch your content as always, though the rusty look isn’t my style it looks great in your space! Omg love the can shelves!!!
Yup- that was my dumb solution to flip the door latch so the orange side of the door can face inwards
🤘🤘
Looks cool. But what will happen to this door in case of fire, if you use it to stock high pressure gas cans of paint?
window
I think Evan uses "Scrap Wood" word in every single video.
btw Love your content
If my father Evan Monsma taught me one thing, it’s that wood is always free
Hope you had a mask for that sanding. That paint is likely lead-based....
I was thinking the same, I hope he did.
I also like building stuff out of trash but as of late I've begun to think about why the stuff was thrown out in the first place. You never know, they could be aspestos contaminated or something.
Definitely check that paint for led. 😐
Do you have a shelf for your magic cards?
not a custom one yet
Is the door lock upside down? Key hole on top?
Yup I flipped things around so the orange side of the door would face inward
