Hi Nigel, I have been watching you for the past four years and I must say how much I am impress with your work.since then I have started my own collection, now I have about 200 root stocks grooming for my BONSAI project of which I will go public sometime soon. FOLLOWING ALL THE WAY FROM......JAMAICA
When I was little, there was a great old dying apple tree in the middle of a roundabout traffic circle that was just like this - dead top and rotten center, with holes in the structure but living growth still all around. We loved climbing and sitting in that tree and thinking about how ancient it was. As much as seeing it struggle might bring you heartache, I really love this bonsai.
11:15 It's always amazing how certain trees are good on their own, even in a training pot, and then certain trees are "elevated" by potting in an interesting pot. Of course, as we are all reminded, bonsai is the art of trees in pots, so the pot becomes crucial to the whole composition. However, when I encounter a tree with real age, not contrived to "look old", like this apple, it is expansive in the mind's eye which places this gnarled apple into the middle of an overgrown orchard. Thank you for this tree.
Reminds me of an a old ancient apple tree found right in the middle of the forest that stands out as being the oldest tree which scholars would of wrote folklore about. Lovely tree 😊
I love this tree, it looks truly ancient and natural! In terms of flowering, maybe it's one of those which you have to prune partialy during the summer (June or July)? Sorry if you already tried that, I thought about it because middle summer pruning helped us with one tree after ten years without a single flower xD
Nigel, really happy to see that tree growing with increased vigor. The quality of branching is starting to come together. My impression from the previous major pruning was one of fragility and weakness. The current growth seems robust and very healthy. Good to see! Its survival is a testament to the power of the life force. Its tenacity sings a song of much gravitas. It's a champion!
love this tree one of my fav, it have such a Disney evil vibe, but it also so intresting to look at, i think you should do what the tree want, my fav part about it is the part you try to hide the most hahaha, also the tree looks pretty healthy
Daggum, the roots are finally coming in! That’s awesome! Great work with her, good sir. I wonder if you could root some of those whips in that rotted wood 🤔
Thanks for the update on this one, been waiting for one 💚💚💚 It'd be cool to have one like this in a bigger size, I'd definitely put a tree house in the middle!
Such a dramatic looking tree, I agree with the other that this is very spooky looking...I can imagine it in silhouette against a full moon...Maybe some spider-webs, to cool...It seems to have regained its vitality...Thanks for another great video...
One thing you could do to help the tree flower if that is your intent. you allow the plant to grow unchecked in the spring. then about mid July trim the branches back the timing of this is when the new growth has stopped extneding and tiny cone shaped bud at the ends of the branches have replaced tiny leaves. about 1/3 of the way up the branch there is a point where the leaf size and internode length get substantially larger, cut the twig keeping these close together leavs. What this does is reduce the water and nutrient demand of the tree by 80% but it only reduces the photosynthetic properties and therefore vigor by 5-10%. this allows the plant to store more sugars in the roots. it is the amount of stored sugars in relation to plant size the tells the tree when to flower.
You seem a bit disappointed in the apple tree, by the tone of your voice in the beginning of the video. I think this tree is fantastic - it is the first of your trees I fell in love with when I started watching your videos!
Ryan Neal said, the older the tree, the less likely it's to take root from the old wood. This apple tree is quite old, it shows. It's quite possible that these roots simply grew into deadwood, I had such a case. I don't think apple trees root well like ficus trees. Just keep removing the moss, rotten wood and let it rot naturally over time.
If you always prune to the last bud, you will never have ramification because that branch will go on over that remaining bud: you should try to leave 2 buds each time

Wow Nigel... this could have easily been the Spooky tree you were looking to make. It looks like the Sleepy Hollow tree. 👍
My sentiments exactly!!!
and these strings of rubber cement look like spider web

This is the best tree I've seen in this channel. I'm not an expert, not even an amateur, I just watch and love your channel. Amazing tree!
Wow, thank you!
It's incredible seeing this tree continue to develop despite the issues it has faced :)
I love this tree, finally a dedicated video about it
Doing very well. I love old apple trees precisely for their age-related “defects” so this is one of my favorites from your collection.
Finally the apple is back! One of my favorites of yours
I think the rougher it looks the better it looks .I love the apple
Love this tree Nigel, it's got great character.
Ooooh I have been waiting to see this tree all year. I love it!

Still my favorite tree!
Austria 🇦🇹😊 What an impressive tree. 😍👍
I would remove the Pearlwort though, as the roots go quite deep and it’s spreading all over.
Cheers 😊
Excellent! Very well explained and executed.
Thanks for the update on this one, been waiting for one 💚💚💚

this is a amazing tree, Nigel. Have you ever thought about stabilizing the hollow part with Epoxy or wood hardener?
It will be a nice spring repoting seasson 🙂
My favorite time of the year, repotting season!!
The Apple tree is another candidate for the Dragon pot..❤❤❤ But it might be too large for the pot...🤔🤷♂️
This tree reminds me of the Whomping Willow from Harry Potter.
Do you ever use root hormone to encourage root growth? Might be helpful for the roots from the trunk?
I think you'll need to head this back in Midsummer to promote flowering. Winter pruning generally favors the production of branches, no?
I've tried everything, no flowers yet!
👍👌👌

I do if possible, thanks!
Indonesia
I am mystified by this tree.
