I got to fiddle next to her at a square dance a few years ago. That lovely woman fiddled me in to the ground! Terrific musician and I could not keep up with her.
Grandpa Jones was friends with the Delmore Brothers as you know and liked to cover their songs. This one the Delmores recorded way back in Sept. 1940. Thanks for posting.
I was stationed in a one horse town in western Texas serving our uncles wishes. I used watch this on the tv. I grew up a city bot but I sure loved this tv series (the name eludes me).
Oh the stars and the silver moon is shining All around is the sweetness of the spring But I’m sad and in loneliness I’m pining For the one I know I’ll never see again How I long for the day when I shall see her If it be where the angels sweetly sing She is mine and the thought of her grows sweeter When it’s time for the whippoorwill to sing When I left with the thought I’d be returning Soon to her with the wealth and joy I’d bring I returned but too late and now I’m yearning She is gone and in loneliness I sing I remember the night she made the promise And these words said to me great joy did bring I’ll be true and you know you’ll find me waiting When it’s time for the whippoorwill to sing
RIP Ramona! Ramona Jones: 'Hee Haw' Star and Fiddler Dies at Age 91, Reports Say The musician, born Ramona Riggins, died Nov. 17 in Goodlettsville, Tenn., news outlets said. She married Louis Marshall "Grandpa" Jones in 1956. The couple starred on "Hee Haw" for 25 years. Born Ramona Riggins in Van Buren, Indiana, she became known as Ramona Jones when she married her first husband "Grandpa" Jones in 1946. They met working at a Cincinnati radio station and moved to Nashville in 1947. Grandpa Jones is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and a longtime Grand Ole Opry Member. They were married for 52 years, until his death in 1998.
Even if there was another "Hee Haw" show, it could never be equal when Grandpa, Stringbean, Ramona, were on it with Roy, Buck and gang. For 24 years they entertained us weekly. So many laughs. Gosh, both missed early. mos60
Well , interesting how Hee Haw started 1969. CBS needed summer replacement for a show. Not sure exactly what transpired, but producers wanted a comedy show with country music. Laugh-In may have contributed but not sure. Maybe the idea came from the show. Yet Hee Haw lasted 24 years, mostly syndicated after CBS dropped in 1971.
@@bigal127 Oh yes. Hee Haw was just such an incredible TV show. Week to week never knew what to expect. And such great talent including the comedians as Junior Samples. Plus the honey beauties. Glad that ur enjoying it now. Take care
Thanks for posting Grandpa and Ramona. I really enjoyed seeing this. I knew Grandpa for a short while before he passed on. I met him at a Grand Ole Opry show in 1981 which I was invited to by Merle Travis and Tex Williams in Spokane, WA. We instantly became friends. He truly was a first class gentleman both onstage and off. Back stage he changed into a stylish suit and glasses and still remained Granpa Jones. Thanks again, Your friend....Rog
Agreed. "Bluegrass Junction" on Sirius radio has just about eliminated bluegrass for the same old homogenized crap that country has morphed into. It's now basically a lot of country/rock/pop played with traditional bluegrass instruments. Thank goodness for groups like the Meyer Family Band and Flatt Lonesome who still keep the tradition alive.
Ramona Riggins was Born in rural Daviess County, Indiana, on January 28, 1924, making her about 10 years younger than grandpa. She is alive and well today. About 4-1/2 years after Grandpa's death, she married the preacher of the little church they attended, located at the bottom of the hill near where they lived. Grandpa is buried in the cemetery behind the church. Read her autobiographical book "Make Music While You Can" if you want to learn her whole story.
the age thing could be right. My grandparents were married in the 30s and she was 12 and he was 30. no where can i find anything telling her age, but she is still alive. No matter they sound great!!!!!!
Great stuff. You can find true American music by the old masters on the internet, thankfully, but why are so few of today's artists recording it? I think it sells when they do, and it sounds great. Didn't Martina McBride's "Timeless" CD do well? I listen to it often, but maybe I'm the only one in the country who does. Anyway, I got that off my chest.
Didn't He start dressing like Grandpa before He got older? I think they did an interview with Him and they told that He was really younger than what He looked like at that time.
Yes, he was in a band and they had an early morning radio show and Louis Jones was so grouchy because he had to get up so early, the other band members called him GRANDPA ! The rest is history. P.S. He was in his 20's when he became Grandpa . I'm sure glad he did.
Yes Ramona is talented. So was also Grandpa Jones. Did you know that Ramona actualy is pregnant on this video. Her hear is actualy black brown and she was much younger than Grandpa Jones. At last 20 year younger. Both are acting and are sminked up as old couple on this video. In the truth life they looked much younger than you belive they are on this video. What is what I call show!
Raise your hand if this is true country music
Так звучит настоящая музыка. Без ненужного блеска и фальши.
This takes me back to yesteryear good job everyone with the hee haw gang 😊
I got to fiddle next to her at a square dance a few years ago. That lovely woman fiddled me in to the ground! Terrific musician and I could not keep up with her.
Raise ur hand if this is pure country music
100% agreed.
I think it's pure Western but I get your point.
✋
Such a lovely couple. I'm believe in my heart they are united in Heaven and seated at God's table where there is no want.
When I grow up I want to be just like Grandpa Jones.
People today should have as much talent and fun as these two.
I really wish there was more of Ramona. She is great. Thanks for sharing.
God bless grandma and grandpa Jones they are good singers
Oh to hear ,"hey grandpa what's for supper"again in much simpler times😢

How I long for the day when I shall see her
If it be where the angels sweetly sing
She is mine and the thought of her grows sweeter
When it’s time for the whippoorwill to sing
When I left with the thought I’d be returning
Soon to her with the wealth and joy I’d bring
I returned but too late and now I’m yearning
She is gone and in loneliness I sing
I remember the night she made the promise
And these words said to me great joy did bring
I’ll be true and you know you’ll find me waiting
When it’s time for the whippoorwill to sing
Rest In Glory Grandpa And Ramona Jones

I often wish I grew up watching Hee Haw. Thankfully I can watch episodes on TH-cam and imagine how it was back then. I’m now 23, born in ‘98

I just came across a recording of Ramona fiddling in the 1963 Shelburne Ontario fiddle contest....
Then you must be about my age.
She must had been a music prodigy. Mandolin, guitar and the fiddle.
Thanks for info on Ramona.
