- Join us for a workshop Ketchup / catchup like no other, as we unveil the inner workings of Iain Tyrrell's automotive haven. In this episode, Iain takes you on a journey through the heart of some of his restoration projects, where craftsmanship and dedication are the driving forces.
First on our tour is Craig, the master of interior restoration, who has been busy breathing new life into a couple of projects.
Witness the remarkable transformation of the Ferrari Dino's interior, where original parts, desiccated by time, are lovingly restored with careful stitching, leather care and re-padding. Then, indulge in the opulent world of Italian luxury as Craig showcases the sumptuous "Senape" leather interior panels of a Lamborghini Espada.
Still under the stewardship of Craig, challenges and triumphs unfold as we delve into the intricacies of headlining replacement in the classic Dino.
James takes the stage, updating us on the majestic Jaguar E-Type, a true work of art having had extensive bodywork restoration and now nearing its full potential.
But the surprises don't end there. An unexpected visitor graces our workshop- an enduring Volkswagen Type 2 Microbus undergoing extensive bodywork restoration, revealing James's long-term passion project.
And as the grand finale, we introduce you to a rare gem - a very original one-owner Aston Martin DB6 Mark 2 Vantage Manual.
Join Iain and the team as we explore these extraordinary restoration stories and keep an eye out for the hidden gems that make Tyrrell's Classic Workshop a treasure trove of automotive history.

Craig's work is just sumptuous. It's always a treat to see what he has been up to.
He deals with all that scrufted. Which besides being proper scouse should now be a technical description of aged leather work. These boys are craftsmen of the highest order.
A true craftsman. Always a treat to see his work and all the time, patience, and detail that goes into it.
Craig is a true Artisan
Craig: a modest and humble master craftsman. Bless him.
The mutual respect between Iain and Craig is a pleasure to see. Two experts who are delighted by each other's knowledge, experience and skill.
Craig better get a rather large Christmas bonus.
A few creamy pints too Iain ❤
I would love to see an episode dedicated to Craig and have him show us how he does his craft... start to finish. His ability to recreate the original upholstery is simply amazing. I'm sure that many of his projects are better than original. Craig is definitely one of the hidden treasures in the shop.
A ‘day in the life of’ for all the craftsmen would be a great mini series.
Totally agree. We need to see more “work in progress “ as well as the finished article please.
Definitely…..not just what we has been done but how was it done please! 🙂
Millions of subscribers would be right for this channel...what a content! Can't get enough of this Sunday videos Mr. Tyrrell....tears.....tears ......of joy! Just no words.... congrats!
If anyone ever questions why car restoration doesn’t come cheaply just steer them towards this channel. The effort and attention to detail is just incredible. Craigs work on that `Espada interior is just amazing, beautiful beautiful work.
Thank you so much for this one Iain and team. I'm sure it's not natural for the guys to get in front of the camera but Craig and James are both utter stars, so thanks for sharing the work you're doing with us all online.
I laughed out loud at the "before" photos of the VW... James deserves a medal for "bestest mate ever" for his work on that!
The Aston....wow! Manual Vantage owned from new?! That is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I hope the owner still gets out and enjoys it.
That Dino is going to be heart wrenchingly gorgeous when it's done....
I hope most of these restorations are for loving owners to enjoy and cherish rather than for cold investment reasons, because the love and care that goes into each one is very special indeed.
Classic restoration has got to be the most satisfying handy work there is. Just art work.
Craig is a legend with patience of a saint. And that DB6 - unbelievable. Brought back memories of trips to London as a kid. The highlight of the journey was passing through Newport Pagnell, where Aston was based at the time, and seeing what beauties were sitting on the premises. Those cars were so beautifully built - a friend had a wealthy uncle who had a DB4 from new, which he drove almost daily as intended and always serviced 'on the nose', so to speak. He had his first engine problem with it at 250k miles. And because he had a complete service history, all the stamps, and had never exceeded a service interval, it was fixed free of charge. Tadek Marek designed a masterpiece with that engine. Keep up the fantastic work Iain, always a pleasure to see what you're up to.
Absolutely brilliant. Craig’s and James’s craftsmanship, dedication and attention to detail is beyond reproach. It’s a pleasure to see the workmanship, enthusiasm and camaraderie in Tyrell’s, and Iain’s respect and support for his team. That speaks volumes, and it’s really a pleasure to witness.
Nearly spat my tea out when Ian said “we’ve got a nice glory hole” 😂😂😂
An untidy area, a hole in a toilet, a quarry, a small furnace for glass blowers. What a phrase.
@@grievuspwn4g3😆
Quite apart from Craig's skill in removing and rebuilding these fabulous interiors, it's also his considerable skill in creating a pattern, often from nothing. Great to see that we still have artisans in England.
The DB6 is worthy of its own video. That is a lovely automobile.
All videos from Ian are simply great but this one is truly special. You can sense the good spirit of the workshop and the mutual respect these amazing professionals and true gentlemen have. Thank you very much the entire Ian's team!
The Dino's leather work is the standard of craftsmanship. But that Espada leatherwork is the exception to that standard. Truly outstanding work.
True English artisanship. Much appreciated to see. Great people make great results.
Thanks for preserving these automotive musical instruments Iain and team!
It's a pleasure to be able to share these with you
Craftsmanship. This is what craftsmanship is and is about. Mr tyrrell, you show and demonstrate what it is from understanding the tools to fashion excellent function into sensational beauty.
The Split screen, which my brother in law had one in the late 70's is such a fantastic design. VW got this so right.
The Dino is one of the best looking cars ever made ❤
Craig sneaking in ‘gumption’ as a technical term. Absolutely love it 😂
What a real craftsman Craig is. My word he's good.
So enjoyable to watch Iain. Craig, you are a master, I pray you have an apprentice, so we don’t ever lose your skills.
I have to admit, the Peugeot 205 really caught my eye. ❤
One has to be utterly amazed at the standard of Craig's work. I am sure that the beige interior which got you glowing Iain is something we would all like to have gently stroked. His work leaves me in total admiration. I really enjoyed this one as I owned a MK1 E type in the 70s, but exchanged it for an e works Mini Cooper S as I simply did not fit in the Jag at 6ft 2ins!! I did know a guy some decades ago who fitted a Porsche engine in a VW van with superb results. And as for the DB6....speechless.
Keep well. Cheers, Bob
Thank you Bob for your continued support and encouragement too!
Iain has been blessed with an upbeat and entertaining wit that makes watching a treat. It is admirable how well he gets along with his employees and gives them credit for their exemplary work.
Craigs corner, love it and probably the most important part of a restoration because it's what the customer sees
Customer sees paint and brightwork first. Upholstery is also very important, but first impressions are made with paintwork which includes the straightness of the body.
No paintwork, no matter how good, will hide imperfections in the blocking stage.
@@thomasmulhall4873This customer would worry about engine longevity, gearbox, maintenance history in general, structural integrity, drive train, steering, braking etc.
But you’re spot on. Weird isn’t it? 😂
In a world of throw away product, this is wonderful to see, thank you Craig
The type 1 is the beetle. the type 2 is the van. The Type 2 T1 is the split screen, the Type 2 T2 is the bay window.
When you opened up the door on that Aston to show the red leather I reacted like Homer Simpson does to doughnuts. Was not expecting that colour with the blue exterior. What a piece of art.
On another note, back in the 70's there was a guy in my area who had fitted a 2.7 Porsche engine into his Samba, quite the sleeper. Had no problem going up hills.
Thank you for including the VW, I was already formulating a comment about wanting to see more of it in my head, and there you go and talk about it! Ive never owned a T2 as ive never found one in good enough condition to buy near me here in the northeast rust belt of the USA. Fantastic work, and a very large favor for a friend indeed!
Craig has outdone himself on that Espada interior. Absolutely stunning! And thank you, thank you, for showing the VW transporter, even though it is a side project. I had the Countach poster on the back of my bedroom door growing up. A Transporter poster (if there had been one), would have required a bigger door.......
The Aston looks stunning , looking forward to seeing that video 👍
Imagine if all bosses were like Ian. I’ve had 1 like him in my 52yrs working life. Compliments where due.
Beautiful leather work by Craig . . a real craftsman.
Love your videos Iain. They are the exact opposite of the other so-called ‘car restoration shows’ on tv and elsewhere on TH-cam. Where they will compress everything into fifteen minutes and create fake drama, you take the time to follow the work in detail over several videos. That’s why they are such a joy to watch, and a breath of fresh.
You are very fortunate to have access to such wonderful craftsman!
What an excellent ketchup! The Espada’s leather looks sensational.
"WHAT? Is happening with the VW T2 split screen in the background there?" Superb work going on everywhere in these workshops. Thanks Iain 🤓
The paint on that dino is just 😮
Craig does lovely work! Credit where credit's due!
What a team of artisans! I'm just glad someone else is paying for the fantastic work. Thanks Iain.
Anyone complaining about the cost of restoration needs to see just how much work is involved. A true statement about some classic cars looking well but just what kinda condition is the important metal parts for strength under the paint and in a lot of cases the filler. Yous are blessed with true craftsmanship in the workforce and nice to hear of youth coming along too in this line of work. Think I could listen to you explaining how paint drys as you have such passion for the correct details involved in proper restoration. Thanks again for allowing us to see just what is involved in doing things to perfection..
This video was my Sunday evening treat, thank you Iain.
@1:53 NOW I know where I’ve been going wrong in my upholstery reconstruction: I need special foam with more _gumption_ from Craigistan! I’m so excited…I also know how to fix all those _scuffted_ seats! Thanks Craig and Iain! 😉😁
Cheers! 🖖😎👍
The usual sheaf of loveliness Iaian...
Thanks for sharing in detail Craig, and James work. You have some true artisans in your workshop.
Dear Iain,
.
For demographics, I’m a 63-year-old “U.S. American,” to differentiate myself from all the other nationalities which are ALSO ‘American’.
.
“I rise today,” to say how much I enjoy you’re being an old-world gentleman-I pick up on the cues very well: For example, when you advise us to see your “Merch Shop,” you’re completely self-effacing about it. I wouldn’t reproach you if you did flog your latest Merch, but you take pains to not do that.
.
And just in your whole manner, you’re jovial with and supportive of your interior & body specialists, and appreciative of their work, which is stellar, of course.
.
Whatever our actual ages are, I feel we’re on the SAME WAVELENGTH, & I can feel the signs of a polite, beautiful show.
.
Kudos, and thank you!
Great to see Craigs work and that he is getting v. comfortable in front of camera 👏
Just ordered a shirt…! Keep up this fantastic work, a joy to watch each time!
Given that some of these cars are as old as it am (over 60 now), and they were NEVER intended, nor expected to last so long, I think you guys do a truly unbelievable job keeping them on the road - often in a better condition than they would have left the factory!
Genuine masters of your craft!!
Craig is s pure genius when it comes to upholstery, what an amazing craftsman !
I have zero interest in VW buses but when I saw it in the background, I wanted the story. Mister Tyrrell intuitively knew that. Love you guys.
Craig, absolutely brilliant attention to detail. A true master of your craft, even if you're too modest to agree.
Iain, we must commend you and your staff. Your skills, knowledge a nd passion are second to none. Very grateful for your time and sharing these steps.🙏🏻
That Dino is going to be the sweetest car when it's done.
What a joy to see these guys doing such great work.
This for me is the perfect car segment of all time
Thanks again for sharing the fiddly bits, it's always a pleasure seeing master craftsmanship. And a special thank you for including the VW bus. Oh and did I spy an Isetta in the background?
In any case I look forward to viewing my favorite nerdy car channel on Sunday morning here in California. See you hopefully next week.
That VW Bus as it's known here in Germany is a type 2 - but T1 series.
Type 1 was the Beetle and type 3 was the VW 1500, the later VW 411 was the type 4.
Confusingly, the aircooled engines are also categorized type 1 - type 4.
T1 was the first bus generation - today, the T7 is on sale. The first T1s had mindblowing 25hp.
Good timing with this update. We in the USA have been focused on SEMA. It’s a totally different world. Thanks for the reality check Iain.
Wow, that was a nice surprise at the end, looking forward to hearing more about that Aston.
The word craftsmen doesn’t speak to the level of the artistry that it represents, bravo gentlemen!
Amazing video! What a fabulous treat. If I could add 1 suggestion - if you can show some small portion of the work. For example, showing how and what is used to make the old leather more subtle or a small clip of hammering out a piece of metal work would be the icing on the cake. Thank you🎉
Well so that. Thanks
Awesome video. The metal work on the Volkswagen is impressive. You know those for a million now.
Craig is a true artist/ master
I always enjoy seeing his part of the shows
Thank You 🙏
Nice little 205 hiding in plain sight too!
Ah the Dino still one of my favourite Ferrari's it's gorgeous
You and your crew of artists inspire me every week. I’ve ridden in Vws just like that and never thought about it. I can’t thank you enough for your fascinating videos.
Craig is a jem of a guy ❤
Sure would enjoy more and detailed videos of Craig’s interior work. He is such a fine craftsman. Please consider. Thank you Ian and the crew.
Doesn’t seem like a place of work..it’s a place where people do what they enjoy & are passionate about..a rare thing 👏👏
The improvised paper clips holder on the headliner is hilarious! Well done. 😅
Outstanding craftsmanship, absolutely love the 'Workshop Ketchups' :)
All that metalwork… one it! By far, my favourite part of any restoration.
Another great job. Thank you, and I was hoping you would mention the VW.
Oh! I love your sense of humour and your new word by Craig! Bravo! That is just exquisite to see the level of work you and your guys go to to breath new life into theses wonderful cars! Well done to you all! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Fantastic workshop tour thank you for sharing this video, The craftsmanship is second to none, if I was ever lucky enough to own a classic motor car Tyrrells Workshop would be the 1st place I would call on. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
15.46 stopping to say wow on Craigs craftsmanship, it’s a privilege to see and also how Iain treats him
He’s a keeper as they all are but praise where it’s due 👌👌👌🏴
I can relate to the door cards as I have also lost my gumption. 🤣
Haven’t we all!
What an incredibly complicated and nuanced art form reworking interiors with such old and deteriorating components. The car is looking fantastic inside and out. Can't wait to see the finished product. It's no wonder your shop is always full of projects. Great work all of you!
Craig is just amazing!
Yes, the E-type was interesting but, like many, I was intrigued by the VW in the background as well. Thanks!
People like Craig are the ones I worry about retiring and having no replacements available that live up to the standard.
Clearly, your work is both enjoyable and far from boring!
Glad to see you’re saving the leather seats. I was surprised at how comfortable they are when I sat in one.
Came for the Aston, and it was worth the wait. As always, Craig’s work was mind blowing. I’m thrilled that most of these cars are saved and brought back to life. That being said, I’m not sure how one justifies what the expense must be. Nevertheless, looking forward to seeing more on the E and the DB. Cheers! 🍻
I think when it comes to this level of classic car all the restoration work actually adds value over and above what it costs, especially when it’s to such a high standard as this. The real collectors know how to look for the signs of shoddy restoration and know when corners have been cut, so it really is a false economy to do anything less.
@@MLB9000 Yes, I can see that. But to me, there is a sad thing about the “real collector.” I’d like to see there cars still in motion on the roads, not sitting in a collection or museum.
Very much looking forward to the DB6 Mk 2 video ! Thanks Iain & co
Love the ketchup😍
Thanks Sir IAIN for taking us along😍👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Another topnotch video! I did a headliner once- never again.
Fascinating! Thanks. E type looks way over complicated design. Great skills from James
Fantastic upload going through the utmost delicate portions of projects, seeing the progress in their stages and the sheer natural strive to absolute perfection by everyone involved in the crew. Especially the VW bus and DB6 both were a pleasing extra. It might be different in the UK but in the Germany the VW bus manufactured up to 1967 were all type 2 of course (Type 1 being the beetle) but coded T1a, T1b and T1c. The successor model was the T2 which is a different and larger design. The next successor was the T3, etc. 'T' standing for the Transporter platform whilst 'Type' standing for differentiation of the beetle and T platform. A tad confusing perhaps. It is such a pleasure to see all the cars in the background as well. Thanks a million again for another mind-boggling upload 💓
Thank you!
Aston guy bought the car in 1970, even if back then he was in his twenties he would be rather elderly now. Amazing to think time and people pass but machines like this one will live on into an electric world
Oh to have a friend like James!
These fine men are true Masters. Thank you for another great presentation!
I watch the engine work and the body work, and although these gentlemen are orders of magnitude beyond my skill set, I can do the rudiments of their work and I can imagine some idealized me doing what they do. But Craig's work looks like magic to me. In no world can imagine myself doing what he does.
A crew of masters at work, just utterly fantastic.
Always an absolute joy watching your ketchup videos .
Ian & team saving these icons of motoring art.
Thank You 🙏
Iain please forgive me for mis-spelling your name,
Amazing! If you continue like this with this channel, you'll most likely hit 1.000.000 subscribers in no time! Unbelievable great content with every now and then... subtle British humor! I love it!
We’ll take that! Thanks…..
Subtle British humor!!! glory hole🤣
@@alangb2086 Indeed... ;-)
@@iain_tyrrell I am a HUGE fan of 60s Jaguar E-Types. I sincerely enjoyed
the segment on the very interesting restoration of the E-Type Jag. 🙂
However, I am wondering ??WHY?? during the rebuilding process of this iconic car body are you NOT applying a rust-preventative product on the well-known rust-prone areas...ESPECIALLY beneath the 2 lower body sills?
Once these sills are permanently in-place it's too late to give this gloriously
beautiful body the protection it clearly deserves. Rust prevention products
would most likely be the least costly aspect of this rebuild. Aprox. 100.00 Euros. for a gallon.
I can't imagine the owner//your customer paying what must be a very large sum of money to have his rust-bucket completely refabricated & not asking you to include rust-preventative efforts in its' reconstruction.
I hope you read & reply to my sincerely respectful question.
I'm a relatively new subscriber to your AWESOME TH-cam Channel.
Best regards from Yucatan Mexico,
Ben
The DB6 is my all time favourite car, if I win the lottery I’m having one.
"Fit the LS engine in the rear" Love it! 😄
