I got a cast iron tub from Kohler when I moved into my house. Had to help the contractor move it to the second floor. I bet next time he bids a bathroom he is going to verify the type of tub.
I got the Kohler Tea for Two 6 ft cast iron oversized tub for my master bath when we built our house 15 years ago. It took 6 guys to get it up the stairs.
I feel for you. I had to install 4 of these on the fourth floor on time in Brooklyn. It was me and 2 other guys. The saving grace was the stairs was a bit wider than the old nyc stairs. We took a day and a half moving it to place
You lived to tell the tale old man(with the atmost respect), i 39yr old, probably would've outsourced the hell out of that job. you guys are built different!!!big ups!!!
26 yrs old here, removed my own tub with clawfeet and imma install it next month 😂😂😂 Took me and a friend a good 5 minutes to move this , the worst part was getting it out of the bathroom, we had to flip in in ways we never flipped our misses 😂😂😂
Damn man. Your videos make me miss working with my old man. He was a master plumber, learned so much from him. Even now he’s still willing to fix some clogged pipes haha.
@@hydronyc No, he had multiple strokes that caused him to have vascular dementia. He’s still able to do things but cognitively he isn’t a 100% anymore.
Had a customer have a 300lb smooth egg shaped tub they wanted installed on the 3rd floor, moving straps wouldn’t work, luckily the owner and the contractor work out and were able to carry it up
I love your quality work and quality attitude. But I smile when I think of how many cast-iron tubs I put in in the old days. I have one in my house I installed about 18 years ago
Cast iron tubs are heavy af, even when they’re cut in half but if u want to keep your man card you better figure out a way to get it moved 😂 if not go be an electrician
This is late, but as soon as you started to describe how much these guys were struggling and playing it up. I knew exactly what it was. Not a contractor or installer, just grew up with old cast iron tubs. To me it's the only kind of tub worth owning.
Broski was talking shit until he found out those contractors were all employed by atlas hisself charged to move a planetary tub into that tight ass space 😂😂
“Some shit you’d only see in unions” killed me. I’m 100% pro union and working class solidarity but NYC unions are something else! And bless them for that 💪🏼
There's an old story about why you dont mess with the plumber, goes something like this - Back in the day when the plumber was responsible for installing the tub, he would carry it by himself up however many flights of stairs it took to get it there. Another version of the same thing is when the plumber arived at the jobsite to start roughing in, he would carry two sticks of 10' cast on each shoulder. Needless to say... dont f@*! with the plumber!
Oh yeah, you gotta love it, cast-iron is awesome unless you’re the one installing it. I was talking with a very large HVAC/plumber. He had a business running it for multiple years used one supplier out in town. Well when it came time to building his personal house that supply house because he generated $30 million in sales for his house is paid for by the business. He bought a cast-iron soaking tub that was so big you had to put it in the house on the second floor Prior to the walls going up because there’s no way people could get it to the second floor. If the walls were up you had to get a crane that was it it was that big that some fucked up shit
I just helped a plumber this week so the same thing. Homeowner wife was not having any other tub. Only way we got it up the stairs way me and the plumber and even the homeowner plus a stair climber/power dolly. Once in the bathroom couldnt get it installed until part of the right wall was taken down. Nvr again
Just set one last week at an autistic school 2 hours north of you. Had to set it on mortar mix too. Took 4 of us to barely get it in and 3 of us to shake it down level. Kholer sure knows how to make that shit solid.
Ways to change Friday to mother's Day Because you got to pay this mother and that mother LOL And the course being a proper company my employees are the first mother I have to pay 🧑🔧
Im a mover (8 years experience) and i can vouch that cast iron bathtubs are some of the most difficult things ive ever moved. Apart from the weight, theres no real good way to grab them AND you might have to turn it vertically around stairwells. Its like trying to hold a 200lb weight with your finger tips
I just gave away an old 2-basin kitchen sink that was cast iron, had it stashed in our basement, carrying it up solo the thing musta weighed 125lbs, about gave myself a hernia. It was a newborn baby elephant.
ya know how much I love every vid .... might wanna look at the sound levels ... to listen to all your great hilarious comments sometimes have to turn up the volume and then ads or other shorties blast out the ears. Must be a standard
Back in the day, they used to frame up the floor, put the tub in first, and then frame the house up around it. I've had to remove several cast iron tubs, and cutting them up is really the only way to go. You can't get them out otherwise. Especially when you're a one man operation
I love it when my coworker messes up and we carry 2 stone shower pans and 1 cast iron tub up, flight of stairs, and the same amount down cause they got the drain side wrong
We had to get block and tackle and had about 6 people trying to get a big ass 8’ clawed foot tub into a 3rd floor bathroom. Maybe the heaviest thing I ever actually put myself under to lift.
My mom calls me when I was around 23 years old and says I bought a tub I need you to come put in FOR YOUR GRANDMA, it has a door so she can walk into the tub. My mom was taking care of grandma at the time. 5 guys loaded into my moms pickup truck she failed to tell me that part. I was legit expecting it to be some sort of new fancy tub with a shower seat, but NOPE it was a legit 1920s walk in tub that looked like something from old hollywood. Cast Iron and weighed around 600 pound it had come from a hospital that was being renovated. It was for disabled patients. It had a very rudimentary water jet system that would circulate the water for wounds I guess. I drove 100 miles home to realize that I need to call every unemployed high school friend I knew just to get it in the house. It was an adventure. When it was all said and done I told my mom, Next time call a plumber and a carpenter. She looked at me an said Nah, thats what I have my sons for. I said MOM I'm a Musician who owns a studio and repairs music gear for a living. She legit looked at me and replied, then a bath tub should be simple! I love my mom!
A proper cast iron bath tub is a helluva thing. Friend of mine had one taken out of his house - it was old and chipped and no value, so his mate decided to break it up with a sledghammer. Took a big swing and the hammer just bounced off. I can't remember how they eventually got rid of it.
Kohler cast iron tubs weigh 235lbs. I had a tough guy apprentice working with me. He carried it on his back into the house. He got up about 3 stairs then he collapsed. ( Only a union guy would offset the tub spout like that )
Some of the bigger Kohler cast iron tubs are a bear to install. Kohler still makes jetted cast iron tubs. Remember my dad and uncle hiring a moving company, to get a Kohler cast iron jetted tub into the second story of a house.

I know that feeling 😕
Exactly whey I never install one. Removal, I can do (just break it up). Install. Noway.
Probably one of the reasons a lot pf plumbing companies at least around me wont do replacement or install

Hahahaha if anyone has ever had to move one of these heavy mothers around they understand the baby elephant in the room. LOL
Surprised that's your first. Out here in oklahoma we use old ones for horse and cattle water troffs.
Why? Aren't those mf's gonna be drinking rust 90% of the time?
Rust is good for you. Besides the tubs are enameled.

Cast iron is awesome 'specially when they build the bathroom around it. Too bad I didn't know you could break it up and take it out in pieces!
Sledgehammer time
They are worth a decent amount of money even used, could probably sell it for $1000 after refinishing it

I use Kohler cast iron tubs whenever I can. Durable forever and holds the heat longer. Does not warp either
