If those leads are the same as the ones on Simpson 260s (series 7 onwards), the "reverse banana" jacks, then you can get new leads from Probemaster. I bought a set for my Simpson 260 and they work great! All of the little accessory tips are interchangeable with other Probemaster test leads too.

My first "Professional" analog meter was a used Simpson 260, without leads. I too found Probemaster made the reversed female leads for the Simpsons. Probemaster makes the best quality leads on the market, really love the gold plating.

I purchased some new leads for my Triplett from Probemaster; Love them. I'll be getting some replacements for a couple other meters as well!

The component marked "536" driven by the LF356 seems like AD536A. True rms to dc converter. Really match with ICL7106.

Thank you for your videos on this. I just finished repairing mine and it was exactly the same issue you found. I drilled a tiny hole in each switch just as you did and added DeOxit. I worked each switch for a few dozen cycles and bam it works perfectly. It’s in calibration too. I did both 2v and 200v AC and DC and it’s exactly what my calibrator shows. Thank you Sir.

Probably, two pairs of AA batteries in tubes would fit that meter.

Hard to believe Simpson would sell the meter without AC option. Generally only see that in really expensive meters with GPIB like older Datron or Systron Donner units- not a 3 1/2 digit DVM. What does it do in AC mode? A Datron will not allow it to be selected, and will show it is not fitted with a self test.

I have a Simpson model 457 which looks about the same (but it is black), runs off a 9v battery, and works perfectly as it has since the day I bought it in the early 80’s because of the Simpson VOM reputation. Enjoy following your videos.

Are you sure the line voltage AC measurement doesn't work? Older digital meters would often read something like 1-300v no problem but milivolt AC would be an extra upgrade.

The shop I started out at back in 1980 had one of these blue Simpson meters at each workbench. We had the leather cases for them and used them in the field extensively.
FWIW, even back in the 80's we'd have to disassemble and clean the slide switches as they needed it on a regular basis, I was glad when we 'upgraded' to Fluke meters...
You brought back some great memories of my early bench tech days, thanks :)

the accelerant is something relatively benign like isopropyl right? I salute you with my cup of coffee with a drop of brake fluid in it.

I think those probes need replacing. The display jumped when you were adjusting the red probe where it enters the multimeter.

Interesting. Funny how big a gap there is between that digital Simpson and the early digital Fluke meters.

What do you mean by gap? My Fluke 8040A looks very similar.

@@barrybogart5436 Sorry, I meant compared to the early fluke hand-held digital meters. I was only ~3 years old when the 461 was built, so I don't know the answer. But maybe my real question was, what happened to Simpson and where is their modern digital multimeter? To my surprise I looked it up and I see something like the Simpson 5002BT, which looks comparable to a high-end Fluke. But why have I/we not heard of this? I can't find a single TH-cam review of a modern Simpson digital multimeter. Why did they fall off a cliff for common use?

I don't know, but if they are still selling 260s for like a grand I guess they don't need to compete with the Chinese DMMs or even American, Japanese or Euro ones.@@reedreamer9518

Interesting that they would ship a meter without AC but as an option. Was that part so expensive?

    • @IMSAIGuy
      @IMSAIGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

yes, the AC converter IC added cost. the old fluke meter had AC option also

I'm sorry if I missed out on the last video- but didn't you say that it was drawing 1.2 amps from the power supply? Doesn't that seem a bit high- or am I misunderstanding something.
