"The need to breathe isn't based on your body needing Oxygen, but rather, your body needing to be rid of CO2." 12 years of schooling and this fact was never taught to me. I feel like this is an important distinction.
Just to be clear, because it's worded a bit weirdly: for several essential processes in your body, you need O2 (Complex 4 of the energy transport chain) in order to generate energy. The breathing in of Oxygen is essential to survive, so breathing is mainly about getting in O2; it's just that the urge to breathe in a healthy person is mainly controlled by your brain by the reaction product (CO2) and not O2 itself. This is done by measuring the partial pressure of CO2 and also the pH of your blood. So you could say: you breathe (why?) because you need O2, you breathe (how?) because you need to get rid of CO2.
I mean, it's not strictly correct. You need to breathe to get oxygen, but your body measures the oxygen you have via how much CO2 is in your blood. Which means that if you are in a sufficiently pressurized anoxic enviroment, you'll die without suffering any pain or warning that you are dying. Your body assumes because it's not breathing in tons of CO2, you must be breathing in plenty of oxygen and you just start to die. Inversely, in a weird case of your body being hilariously unprepared for weird edge cases, If you were to be in a high CO2 enviroment, even if it has sufficient oxygen, will cause your body to freak the fuck out, and slowly cause your lungs to become acidic. This is widely considered to be a bad thing.
What stimulates breathing is the chemoreceptors that sense CO2, but hypoxia is also a secondary stimulation for breathing. Both are important. So much so, that the bodies of people with COPD (emphysema or chronic bronchitis) actually develop a certain insensitivity to low Oxygen levels on their blood (if this didn't exist they would just not develop this...) And can be at a 86% oxygen saturation without feeling like they need more air. A normal person would feel like they're drowning at 86% .... So it's not completely accurate to say that hypoxia doesn't stimulate breathing , like the video says, but I guess he's trying to simplify it...
When the guy says the 'gill' has a battery 30 times smaller than a regular battery, that's a major red flag for me. That battery alone (if it existed) would be a major revolutionary invention - so yeah - it's bullshit.
That kind of battery would most likely exist but the government(s) would probably take it for military advantages over other countries, I remember hearing the a better battery with small size was made but after 2-4 day it's all gone, you don't hear anything about it and I heard this about 3 ago,
i don't think so.... have you heard of apollo 1? oxygen isn't explosive by itself, but 99% of the materials on a submarine would explode if taken to a 100% oxygen enviroment....
So essentially to get rich, you need to make some stupid thing like this that sounds smart and have a whole bunch of idiots fund it, then when you get millions of dollars just say that your project is canceled, but instead you secretly take all the crowd funded r&d money into your pocket and use it for whatever you want
I'm sure people can get away with it if they're smart. All they really have to do is use some of the money for things that are related to what they say they'll do, then pay the rest in huge salaries to themselves and their friends (who they hire).
You don't have to scam anyone you can just make something legit stupid that people will still pay you for. For example their was a guy who charged people like 50 dollars for a fake Drone hunting license. Keep in mind he didn't lie to them, he put down on the bottom of the store page and in every license in small print that this was a fake license and that legally you still can't shoot down drones. Didn't matter, people still bought up and the guy made a ton profit wise since all he had to pay for was the nice paper to print the license on and a frame.
@Atur Sams depends on which platform you crowdfund on. Indiegogo actually has fine print in their user agreements that says you can fail to deliver your product and not be required to give the backers any refunds. It's basically a free for all where you can promise anything, get money, and never deliver. Kickstarter specifically has policies to prevent such a thing. Which is why it's much more popular
Anomalous you also know its fake when the only footage they have of him designing it is him just spinning around a CAD model... that’s as typical as it gets.
Yes, I would love to see how a diver experiencing Oxygen Euphoria would handle breathing through that thing at all. Similar to Nitrogen Narcosis, you don't even know you are under the water when it reaches a critical level.
Oxygen is necessary, tho. That's why people fill the tanks with mixture of noble gas, nitrogen and oxygen instead of just noble gas. (Also, oxygen tanks used in shallow diving actually contains more oxygen than atmospheric air.)
Why does everything seem to claim that they invented a new superbattery for their bogus tech? Like, if you truly had made something THAT good, you would become super rich with how profitable it would be, and maybe could be looking at a Nobel Prize. So are these people saying that they would rather crowdfund a niche product than become the next Elon Musk?
Well, cause they'd need a new super battery (and many other things) to make a small, sleek device work as good as a complicated, giant and expensive system.
Because 'we made a better battery' is a lot less exciting to the average consumer than 'we made a thing that lets you breathe underwater'. And the average consumer is who they're trying to trick to get as much money as they can as quick as they can, as well as the fact the average consumer would take longer to catch on to the crap than the kind of people who would be focused on less outwardly exciting things like batteries.
Right, in fact it is one of the principal goals in development of batteries, if we could storage so much energy in a small battery we wouldn´t need gas or liquid fuels
Tip: Before you buy something dont depend on one review. most of the time before i buy something even if its an big and famous company i still do research. or how their devices works and possible problems.
It's really weird going back to this video 6 years later and seeing just how wrong Thunderf00t was about everything. You get more opinionated theories rather than truth without bias. The hard truth, is these days like a knife through the tip of the finger to some people and they just don't like it cause they're not willing to learn things further their own. And to do alot of this I'll admit, takes alot of mathematical understanding and alot of different science understanding to attempt making underwater rebreathers. On a legal point, they're not actively selling it as it is they're "crowd funding". Not the company's fault if people are retarded, from a legal standpoint. Now if they were to try actually selling it...
Einstein said that the stupidity of people is endless, nobody could prove him wrong xD. And in times of social media, seeing = believing, crowdfunding is seemingly an effective way to make endless amounts of money $$$$$.
So for anyone who missed it, the person who made this campaign tried to put it back up and decided to talk about their "proprietary technology" and finally told everyone that the mask is made to hold canisters of liquid oxygen. They were planning on making a website where people could buy or exchange these canisters. It was just a small, inefficient and unsafe SCUBA mask. So he pretty much came out and admitted that the entire video was a lie since it clearly says several times in the video that the mask is artificial gills that are extracting the oxygen out of the water.
dacypher22 thy still wouldn’t work. Liquid oxygen is extremely cold and at that point you’d have to add a device that could safely heat the liquid as it was needed. XD even when they change the story it’s still not possible
Another problem with the mask using liquid oxygen is when oxygen goes from liquid to gas it expands by ~800 times. There isn't enough room in the mask to safely transform the liquid to breathable gas. Either you would have a problem with the pressure as tiny tiny drops that corresponds to one breath enter the small compartment (and any malfunction would risk or damaging your lungs) or you would need to hyper ventilate as the corresponding air is just the size of the mask but at normal pressure.
Ya right, if that battery has 30x energy density and charges 1000x faster than all other batteries, give Elon Musk a call. Let's put that in the next gen Tesla. LOL
Jefff yeap.. and less weight with that old style battery he made and add maybe 6 of these suckers.. ok 10 of these.. and you should be able to make it end to end across usa.. and possibly back again
When I was in high school, and a smoker, I swam the length of 30 ft pool 4 times without coming up for breath. That was on a random trip and not because of practice. it was like 3:05 or something. I admit I have an easier time than most because I sink in water.
+MattMexor Except lying about your product isn't exactly the best sales pitch. Why not explain the actual mechanism if it actually works, they literally have nothing to lose doing that. Saying that it's "really small holes" makes the product sound pretty dumb to me, instead of explaining what's actually going on. People who don't understand this don't care if they hear "it's small holes" or something else, because they won't know the difference anyhow.
+Monkey Jesus I think it's not funny about them, it's funny how many people threw money at it. Just shows how uneducated people are. And people don't have to really know science, they just have to know how to ask the right questions =/
I was a scuba instructor and dive chamber for over 30 years. This was a GREAT explanation of breathing systems. Next lets have one on why you cant use a 3 ft. Snorkel.
@@TheHiddenChamp I'm guessing it has something to do with the volume of the snorkel tube compared to the volume of your lungs, along with the superhuman strength it takes your lungs to inhale from that depth. And then you have the difference in pressure between what's in your lungs and the external water pressure. I'm sure a scuba expert can come up with the other 999,997 other ways this doesn't work.

We live in an age where interest in science has become mainstream. However, understanding of science is not yet mainstream by any means. Because of this, there is a large market of people who will give money to any idea that sounds "innovative" or "scientific," without bothering to do the research or learn anything for themselves. After all, if a person claims something is scientifically plausible, why not just blindly believe them? Skepticism is important in science and engineering, not just in other fields. Especially when regarding projects that are asking for your money. Crowd funding makes it possible for the public to be easily duped by this kind of project, where if any of these ideas were feasible (solar roadways, hover boards, triton artificial gill, thorium cars, ETC), any inventor could have easily made countless millions by making and selling the patents to companies that would simply love to have such pipe dreams become a reality. But no. Instead, they resort to crowd funding - something they would never need to do if their ideas were so obviously capable of turning a profit. Crowd funding should be for things that may or may not be profitable, but that might be fun or interesting. For engineering and science applications however, it is cancerous.
+INTernal Jordan I think what Battam meant to say is that 'subconsciously manually' is an oxymoron. It would have been more accurate to say it stopped your subconscious breathing, or that it caused you to breath manually. But yeah, it did that to me too, and I hate it.

I had a great idea, way better than solar roads. Underground solar farms! Think of all the space we have underground, in tunnels, pipes, tunnels and pipes and tunnels. We could build all these things out of solar panels deep underground where they wouldn't get exposed to the harsh elements like solar roads are. I haven't tested my theory yet but in principle its so cool it has to be worth making a Kickstarter.
If you go deep enough, geothermal energy may allow you to power led grow lights which may make your idea a not so bad one, but plants need fresh air(or at least co2 and o2), so you'd have to power air pumps, water pumps, etc... It's doable, but I'd like to think we'll tackle the overpopulation problem before we start needing to do this.

@@Spelter well really an dive of decent length is dangerous without a full cylinder or if it isn't a full cylinder than you divide the air you have left for each part of the dive. Depth comes in as a factor when you are planning the dive with an RDP table or dive computer.
Even if they were full of compressed air and you breathed really shallow, (which would be almost impossible given the exertion of swimming underwater), you would probably only have enough air in there for half a breath.
Your tap has a flow restrictor (marketed as a filter/aerator) on it. Makes it better for rinsing, but worse for filling. My irrigation, on the other hand, blasts out 20 gallons per minute which still less than 1.7 liters/second.
Todd Schriver flow restrictors are just bullshit environmentalist shit. It just goes back in the ground after, so why should it take 10x as long to fill anything.
I remember in my environmental science class learning about how the oxygen levels in the water for fish is like a finite land resource like water for terrestrial animals. If a pond has too many fish inside given the amount of oxygen produced in the pond, some of the fish, if not all of them, will die from over-depleting the supply of O2 in the water. We have so much more oxygen in the air that it’s silly to imagine people outside in a park dying from a lack of oxygen because too many people got too close together and breathed away all the oxygen. This device really exploits that lack of common knowledge about the difference of resources for water breathing animals versus terrestrial creatures. At 5 minutes in the device is already clearly busted. It doesn’t pull in 2 gallons of water a second. It doesn’t even have a pump. Or a large opening. Even if the power supply was powerful enough, it’s never going to work.
fun fact, in highschool while on the swim team, we were seeing who could swim that farthest underwater. naturally i wanted to boost the oxygen in my blood so i took a lot of deep breaths in rapid succession and then went for it. i made it 75 yards but i only remember the first 30-40. id become hypoxic. but all is good, they pulled me out, gave me some rescue breaths and i came to...........if only i had this awesome gill!! side note - Thunderf00t, i just found your channel and i love it. keep up the good work!
After reading through the comment. People are confused about the amount of oxygen in the water. Thinking it refers to the "O" part of H2O. It does not. Fish do not breathe in water and exhale hydrogen. They are not separating the molecule. Water absorbs some oxygen from the air in the form of O2. That is what fish breathe, and is why a fish tank at home needs an aerator (with bigger fish), otherwise your fish can actually drown, due to lack of oxygen. This rebreather/gills device claims to remove the O2 from the water as a fish would. Since the amount of oxygen absorbed in water is low, this is beyond impossible for something that small running on small batteries.
+Bill Bob: Is that a counter-evolution thing, or some specific evolutionary path (starting from sea creatures, as all life started in the sea as far as we know) that you think we evolved from that doesn't involve fish?
Great video. As an avid scuba diver, I was livid when my friend showed me this. One thing you failed to mention is that even if the product worked exactly as described, you’re breathing 100% oxygen. This will lead to oxygen toxicity if you go any deeper than around 4-5 meters (16 feet).
Finally! One person with any kind of a clue as to just how ridiculous this whole concept is! I've watched this for years and seen no one shut it down with any real knowledge of the subject! There have been plenty of uninformed ignorant reasons it doesn't work/couldn't work, but you are the 1st I've seen that had any real understanding at all as to the first main reason it is A) a crap concept and B) the first of many reasons something like this is just a pipe dream with all of the technologies real and on the horizon right now. This is science fiction! Is it possible that a device of a somewhat similar nature could be created one day? Yes, I suppose it's possible! Is it on the horizon? I very seriously doubt it! Good Job!
Yes, the first rebreathers used 100% oxygen, but people quickly realized that it has very limited applications because of its very shallow maximum depth (about fifteen feet). Nowadays, rebreathers and open circuit SCUBA use oxygen diluted with nitrogen or sometimes helium.
I've invented the same thing, except mine runs on 9V Duracells which cuts down my cost considerably and allows for up to 1000 hours of breathable de-oxygenated pure organic air. I'm going to launch my campaign soon, I just have to find more test pilots, the last 3 died and the government is wondering why my kids are not in school anymore.
+SkepTorr the only victims are dumb people. If you take money from normal people to pay police to enforce a law which protects dumb people from losing money, you make us all worse off.
+SkepTorr In the UK there it is a crime to "Obtain money under false pretenses" . I'm sure that touting a product that breeches the laws of our known physics, would meet that criteria!
The fact that dolphins, whales, penguins, and other air breathing marine mammals have been so successful in spite of not having gills is the fact that there is so much more oxygen in the air instead of the water that they're actually able to be more energetic than the fish they compete with. Breathing air is actually an advantage instead of a disadvantage.
+MrClickity The problem is that most people don't know anywhere near enough about the science and technology involved in this (breathing, gases dissolved in water, the filters, batteries, etc) to even realize that it sounds too good to be true!

So essentially to get rich, you need to make some stupid thing like this that sounds smart and have a whole bunch of idiots fund it, then when you get millions of dollars just say that your project is canceled, but instead you secretly take all the crowd funded r&d money into your pocket and use it for whatever you want
@Atur Sams as simple as a homeless guy buying a house, just dont get sued, simple!
@Atur Sams it's a meme
You know its fake when the guy designs a goodlooking thingy before making it work
Anomalous you also know its fake when the only footage they have of him designing it is him just spinning around a CAD model... that’s as typical as it gets.
I think he saw the part wen qui gone and obi go underwater and wanted to make the thingy they used.

Yes, I would love to see how a diver experiencing Oxygen Euphoria would handle breathing through that thing at all.
Similar to Nitrogen Narcosis, you don't even know you are under the water when it reaches a critical level.
This is my first thought. Most do not know that oxygen under pressure is fatal.
Oxygen is necessary, tho. That's why people fill the tanks with mixture of noble gas, nitrogen and oxygen instead of just noble gas.
(Also, oxygen tanks used in shallow diving actually contains more oxygen than atmospheric air.)

But to much can cause problems
Why does everything seem to claim that they invented a new superbattery for their bogus tech? Like, if you truly had made something THAT good, you would become super rich with how profitable it would be, and maybe could be looking at a Nobel Prize. So are these people saying that they would rather crowdfund a niche product than become the next Elon Musk?
Well, cause they'd need a new super battery (and many other things) to make a small, sleek device work as good as a complicated, giant and expensive system.
Simple
Because they're con artists. They wanna scam as many people as possible.
No one can compete with John B Goodenough making batteries he is legend 🙌
Because 'we made a better battery' is a lot less exciting to the average consumer than 'we made a thing that lets you breathe underwater'. And the average consumer is who they're trying to trick to get as much money as they can as quick as they can, as well as the fact the average consumer would take longer to catch on to the crap than the kind of people who would be focused on less outwardly exciting things like batteries.
Right, in fact it is one of the principal goals in development of batteries, if we could storage so much energy in a small battery we wouldn´t need gas or liquid fuels

Fish are made to not consume so much oxygen and the cost is more simple body's and smaller brains while most of out chest is just the lungs
Your brain uses 70% of your body's energy supply which roughly translates to oxygen consumption too. To add to this, there is a reason why a lot of fish have next to no short term memory and barely any intelligence to speak of.
Octopuses are freaking brilliant, water animals aren't just "dumb" due to "lack of oxygen" - The majority of life on Earth seems to be doing just fine sharing the same ocean oxygen.
Octopi make do by having really small brains and allocating their motor control to areas in each tentacle.
Yes, they have a smaller brain in each tentacle. I fail to see how having 9 brains is an optimization for lack of oxygen.
they aren't brains, they are small neural networks and being situated closer to the muscles means they use less energy in motor transmissions.

RoosInBlood even worse, pure oxygen is toxic when you’re 6 metres under water... so you’d probably get convulsions and blackout pretty quickly
hitch How did that happen?

+MattMexor Except lying about your product isn't exactly the best sales pitch. Why not explain the actual mechanism if it actually works, they literally have nothing to lose doing that.

How much money do these idiots need to be given for the lulz? Someone stop the madness!

Even in a well aired pond of fishtank, they can't go forever without a gulp of air at the surface occasionally to keep their oxygen supply up.
fun fact, in highschool while on the swim team, we were seeing who could swim that farthest underwater. naturally i wanted to boost the oxygen in my blood so i took a lot of deep breaths in rapid succession and then went for it. i made it 75 yards but i only remember the first 30-40. id become hypoxic. but all is good, they pulled me out, gave me some rescue breaths and i came to...........if only i had this awesome gill!!
side note - Thunderf00t, i just found your channel and i love it. keep up the good work!
Ah, thanks. I thought it'd electrolyze the H₂O
P Mason. no, fish would be the dominant life on earth!
DrewLSsix Technically, we are part of the fish clade because we descended from them, so fish are the dominant life on Earth.
Bullshit, we didnt descend from fish. Everything else that was said was true, buts thats not.
+Bill Bob: Is that a counter-evolution thing, or some specific evolutionary path (starting from sea creatures, as all life started in the sea as far as we know) that you think we evolved from that doesn't involve fish?
A bunch of BMX handlebars glued together. Lmao thunder foot you're too awesome man
Great video.
Good Job!
Oh shit your right I hadn’t thought of that there are a lot of other reasons
Didn't early diving gear ised 100% compressed oxygen tanks?
Yes, the first rebreathers used 100% oxygen, but people quickly realized that it has very limited applications because of its very shallow maximum depth (about fifteen feet). Nowadays, rebreathers and open circuit SCUBA use oxygen diluted with nitrogen or sometimes helium.
Yep
This picture is in my science textbook so now I've lost trust in that section of the textbook
what in the holy education?
Why would you trust anything in a public education book?
If they had really invented batteries like that they wouldn't be trying to sell gills.
Rangooo yeah right a battery like that would make billions
I've invented the same thing, except mine runs on 9V Duracells which cuts down my cost considerably and allows for up to 1000 hours of breathable de-oxygenated pure organic air. I'm going to launch my campaign soon, I just have to find more test pilots, the last 3 died and the government is wondering why my kids are not in school anymore.
+messianicrogue I knew if I kept reading your comment, it would pay off.
There should be laws against such frauds.
+SkepTorr the only victims are dumb people. If you take money from normal people to pay police to enforce a law which protects dumb people from losing money, you make us all worse off.
+SkepTorr It's the idiot tax.
All of these scams gain so much traction because people forget a very simple rule: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
+MrClickity The problem is that most people don't know anywhere near enough about the science and technology involved in this (breathing, gases dissolved in water, the filters, batteries, etc) to even realize that it sounds too good to be true!
but then again , when is it time for us too make invent some stuff that can benefit us.. instead of taking money :S?
The idea of breathing underwater is a children's cartoon idea of the 60's . At present it's still just that, a children's cartoon idea . You're right MrClickity , a "SCAM" ; And a dangerous one at that , this could cost someone their life .
+John H People can breathe underwater....with proper scuba gear.
Hololens sounded too good, but we know it's real.
@15:38 I had forgotten how annoying Laci Green is. Thanks for the reminder.
Does it run on something very dense? Yes, it runs on dense people.
When I was a kid, we used to do that hyperventilation thing to stay underwater at the pool much longer. A little freaky to know it's actually dangerous.
Well, there went a bit of my respect for vsauce... thats where i first heard of Triton.
I hate to break it to you, but vsauce has always been about style over substance, its beat poetry and vagueness all the way - which is fine if you recognise and appreciate it for what it is.
True
+builder396 Vsauce has never been about science. It's more a philosophical channel (although probably is an insult to philosophy). As a result, you shouldn't trust what they have to say on science.
+builder396 Michael usually researches stuff pretty well. The other 2, especially the hipster, just reports on sensationalist bullshit.
+builder396 Vsauce is a bad place to learn about scientific innovations or news. Even the major science popularization magazines are more accurate. If you really want to learn about research though, you should look at hosts for research papers like ArXiv, NLH, PubMed and the like.
New idea guys! Mattresses made of concrete! They will last longer than your old ones.
This is nothing compared to that solar-powered thorium engine co-invented by Ken Ham and Anita Sarkeesian to prove that evolution is a social construct created by the patriarchy.
This comment right here; Love everything about it.
+Fahrenheit4051 You just hit a homerun
+Fahrenheit4051 the sad part is, this sounds like something that could actually happen.
Let’s be honest, we all wish that this was real.
Sameeeee
@Maulen. IDC Florez well the thing didn't work that we'll,you barely breathe, but yes,I do wish this worked perfectly
@@xx_somescenecath0lic_xx888 well it kinda is real but not like that, u could genetic modify the size of the air filter if the fish and use an pump to pump the air into an ar tank
Did anyone else spend half of this video breathing REALLY deeply?
I think I need to get into this pseudo-scientific racket.
Actually I know a way to scam loads of people at once with no risk. Just send me 10 bucks and I'll send you the instructions.
