The premiere of this video was seen by 500 million people worldwide ! Even today with youtube they can't replicate those numbers (Adele's much hyped ''Hello'' didn't get even close to those numbers after 24 hours of being posted). Btw, there's a re edited version (made by MJ) of the second part of this short film, where they digitally added on the windows that he's breaking, words like ''Go home ni**a'' and ''KKK rules'', which can make more sense to some viewers. The panther clearly is a reference to the Black Panthers organisation of the 60's/70's.
Thanks for those pieces of information. Did you like the points we made after the short film was finished? A lot of MJ fans seem to like what we had to say.
This is in my Top 5 Favorite MJ videos. To me, the panther dance sequence is fine art. End of story. MJ created masterpiece after masterpiece. This music video is one of them. Thank you for creating this channel! 😊
So glad you enjoyed our reaction. Totally agree with what you said about the panther dance. And you're welcome for the channel. We have a lot of MJ videos on the channel with more on the way :)
I haven't seen another reaction channel break down this video and song like this before! Normally they just go "That was great but wtf was that ending" Great work!
So glad to hear you liked what we did with this one. We have more than a few MJ reactions where we're more or less just in awe of him, but this one deserved a deeper breek down, in our opinion. Thanks for watching and thank you again for the comment! :)
Russ and Lauren, this is imo the best reaction you both did in your channel and also the best analysis ive listened to , of this iconic song and short film , Lauren you got the exact point Michael was making here and the purpose he wrote this song and the purpose of this music video, thank you so much and not surprised you are a college educator , thank you Russ for understanding and pointing out how media treated Michael Jackson and the fact that Michael Jackson is incomparable to any other artist , he is on another level , thank you so much and I really enjoyed this reaction, I hope poeple who are watching this will have a better understanding of Michael Jackson the king of pop and his music.
We are so, so glad you enjoyed this reaction and everything we had to say about Michael. To be honest, when we finished shooting this, we were both like "I think that's the best reaction we've ever done". I'm so glad people are enjoying it. Going forward, we're going to work hard to make them all as good (or near as good) as this one! :)
@niamhhanrahan6957 we really hope you enjoyed all the positive things we had to say about Michael Jackson, how he was treated by the media and how incredible this short film is.
@InfectiousGroovePodcast thank you Russ , love your podcast so much , most of all love yours and Lauren 's honest opinions and knowledge of music 🎶 take care ,love and blessings 🙌 ❤️🙏🏻🦋🌻
Everything Micheal does is intentionally done. We all are human beings and we should respect our differences and still be able to be around each other and live among each other no matter the color of our skin without putting anyone down. This is the message I received from this video. RIP MJ.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing what you got from this video. Hopefully it's evident from our videos that we love and respect Michael Jackson very, very much. We have a lot more MJ videos on the way :)
We are so grateful for all the MJ fans who are appreciating this video. This is Russ replying but I read you comment to Lauren. She smiled so wide and said "I'm so glad people like what I had to say!" :)
One of my favourite songs from the dangerous album. I loved the way different cultures were on display and honored, and i loved the following along with the heads morphing at the end.
Just discovered you ~ you are a true fan and it warms my heart…MJ is a huge part of our home, my past, present and def future. I would love to see u resct to my fav MJ vid DIRTY DIANA. His moves/timing are literal butter…. No words can describe him as a human or performer…. Ty for appreciating him❤️
So glad you found us! Yes, we love and appreciate Michael Jackson very much. We have a LOT of MJ videos on the channel right now with more on the way. We shoot reaction videos far in advance but I will put Dirty Diana on the list and I promise we'll get to it. For now, search the channel for Michael Jackson and you'll find a lot of videos to enjoy :)
I remember seeing this for the first time way back when it was shown around the world at the same time, an it was just wow, an as for the media putting it all over the news the next day,,,,,,, well they gave him what he wanted,,,,,for the hole world to see that he is back,,,,,,,, and it worked,,,,,,free advertising,,,as the hole world seen it the next day,,,,,,,genius
No one says who is the new F. Mercury, or the next Elvis, etc, so for me the " new MJ" sounds exactly as it is: he can be replaced. Wow, i like Lauren's explanations a lot! This short is discussed in lots of academic works, from Armond White, Susan Fast, Elizabeth Amisu ( you can find them online), im writing this and you two are still discussing so i wanted to ask if she is in educational field, which you confirmed. MJ showed here that he knows who he is, he is not just a ,,pop star,, and his Panther coda is way more than some ,,vulgar,, moves ( funny thing is that he is psychoanalized based on these moves, which is so sad but in the same time hilarious), he shows his anger, rebellion against the status quo of things, the Royal Army Hotel is the symbol of the colonizers, its a lot and if you are ever intetested read the academics interpretations. I really enjoy your reactions, they are so genuine and detailed! Another big difference between MJ and any other is that an artist like MJ is catching your attention no matter what musical genre you prefer. I am not into pop music, i wasn't, but even back in the day Michael managed to make me stay in front of the tv or not to switch the radio station. And among my friends ( rock, punk, rock) their reaction was the same. This is his profoundness as an artist, to be universally accepted. And this is what separates him from all the others. I became a fan some couple of years ago, and i am glad for this. What i remember is the fact that i found his smile and face expression so calming, which is available now too. I gotta stop. Thank you so much! Enjoy your week-end!
All excellent points! Thanks for such a detailed and great comment. Side note, it's great that you picked up on the fact that Lauren is an educator. She's taught college courses for years now :)
Thank you! Looks like you just gave me some reading material! I have always wanted to put together some kind of class about reacting to and interpreting things in pop culture. Maybe this is my sign...
@@MrsLaurenRobinson:) there are lots of papers available on academia...edu on pop culture and not only, I hope you get the complete link, every time I want to leave a link my comment is blasted into oblivion. About MJ"s artistry we have also Joseph Vogel, Willa Stillwater ( a blog dancingwiththeelephant), Isabelle Petitjean, mjj academic studies, parthofhistory(de)- I love this website, really interesting in depth discussions. And if you ever discuss MJ with your classes, they should know that this man was really invested into cultivate himself, and he really was a book worm no exaggeration.
@@MrsLaurenRobinson yep, although I've tried to write carefully, my comment was blasted into oblivion. Reg MJ's artistry I forgot to mention Joseph Vogel and Willa Stillwater. If you will ever talk abt MJ don't forget to mention the fact that he was heavily invested in cultivating himself and a book worm; from self help to books about the History of cinema, entertainment to psychology, History, black History, litterature, poetry...who would imagine that after x concert he was backstage reading Tagore and Rumi? Or in between concerts he could spend hrs totally absorbed by a book. This is what made me re consider him, because I've noticed that nothing was random with his art, and I could guess the second meanings in many instances.
Hi there! I think TH-cam is doing something to your comments with links because we certainly aren't deleting them. If you would, please email the links to us at infectiousgroovepofcast at gmail dot com And pleaee do continue to leave your great comments on our channel. We really appreciate them :)
Great reaction and Happy MJ-Day to the both of you. 🌻❤💔❤🩹 I enjoyed listening to your reflections and agree on your interpretations. I think it's important to not leave out the obvious perspective of MJ having had to live as "a color" and the obvious rage of anti-black racism, all racism, the effed up stuff about being treated as a n***** while being told one isn't proud of one's herritage, roots, is not black enough, etc. This being filmed not even 6 months after the Rodney King beatings and MJ being anything but dismissive of the black tradition - not least musically - they were brought up within (but not limited to). This quote from MJ from a Chicago Tribune interview in 1992 on the anger expressed in the panther dance, I think is important too: “Anger and rage are the prelude to a shift in consciousness. Unless we feel rage at some of the inequities and injustices of our society, there is no hope for transformation.” It speaks to the song being both individual and a political/societal statement (which MJ felt the need to point out, after everyone going hobby-psychologist on the panther-section). BoW expresses many dualities, as you already spoke on; both expressing the joy of coming together and learning from/celebrating and respecfully mixing ones' cultures, the love of unity and oneness and the rage and frustration seeing the society limit us through racism - with very real and deadly results for poc - and putting your foot down, saying "NO, I'm not playing nice anymore" and allowing one to explode, is yet another example of such dualities. Both on societal level and individual. Also in a more humourus and childlike way expressed in the beginning with a suburban middle-class family being, let's say, unappreciative of their child (I still feel anger in the pit of my stommach when that MJ poster breaks - and the child, let's say, puts their foot down. I also LOVE how they got the lions to look up and with their eyes follow the dad falling down.
So glad you enjoyed our reaction and THANK YOU for the detailed comment! I (Russ) am about to head to the gym, so I'm going to read through the whole comment on the treadmill. Happy MJ Day to you as well and thanks again for the detailed comment :)
Thank you! I love that you keep coming back to the "duality" theme. That's important in the messaging and (I think) absolutely deliberate... "Black or White" in itself is a duality!
@@MrsLaurenRobinson Very much so. Opposites that aren't opposites but are treated as opposites and therefor needs to be responded to as opposites whilst communicating them as non-opposites or non-necessary opposites in a continuous process. Just like two-way communication vs/equal to/synthesizing shared understanding, constructing further two-way communication and so on, through a dynamic of meta-layers, as you were speaking on. 100% deliberate.
Hey Russ and Lauren! Great video and analysis/reaction as always. And I agree 1000% r.e. "so-and-so" is the new MJ. For me I get the same feels when anyone says X is the "new and/or next Beatles"- no they're not... just no. :)
