  • Liverpool had already won the Football League, but their season wasn't over yet.
Winning the FA Cup the season prior put them in the European Cup Winners' Cup. They had a tough run, having to face Juventus, Standard Liege, Honved and Celtic, but they made it all the way to the final, where they were to face Borussia Dortmund in their first ever European final.

Shame that such a Liverpool legend like Roger Hunt was only half-fit for his sole European final in his Reds career.

If Rowdy had been just a little more fcked at the end and hadn't made it back to the goal line quite so quick...

I find it amazing that they could not analyze the problem and get players coming from deep to move into the space left by a withdrawn striker. For example the overlapping fullback in a three man move. These combinations were known in the mid 1950's by top coaches and appear to be pioneered by Hungary around 1954 12 years before this game. I understand Ramsey managing Ipswich had a simple version of this in 1962. Ron Greenwood at West Ham was working on 3-man combination with overlapping fullbacks as early in 1963 I believe, So however much respect we give the Liverpool boot room they were tactically not top notch.
