This is one of the characteristics Andrew always tends to push into us. Along with mixing and its techniques, also look into things with a real audio engineer perspective. Of course one needs to know what to look for, and I am sure this is, due to his experience, something that definitely was not responding as expected, hence the analysis. Great job as always, and another clear example of not to follow what your eyes see, but fully understand things. Thanks Master, and keep up the good work.
The summary of this video: "20 different SSL plugins show different results. Some of plugins are precise. Some not. Some give even more cut. Know you plugin. And Enjoy. I'm a big fan of SSL". It's what was said in the video.
This topic was an eye opener for me. Most of us have been listening for years about the techniques of great mixing and mastering engineers without having these nuances into account. When they say “I always cut the vocal at 60hz” or “I always boost 3k+” we need to critically ask ourselves what exactly that means and not blindly do the same in our mixes. That is why Andrew’s course is so special: you will learn to think and hear critically, and, among many other topics, you will learn how many classic and modern audio tools behave and how you can apply their specific characteristics in your mixes. Thank you for another great video, Andrew.

Hello! Should I put Steven Slate's Virtual Tape Machine on the DAW master channel before SSL FUSION with VINTAGE DRIVE enabled? Won't it be oil anointed with another extra oil and create unnecessary distortion?
You are the best Andrew, We bust different myths and different kinds of bullshit, hahaha you tell it exactly how it is. Ill be signing up to check out your course as soon as i can afford it man. Kudos Keep it up
I'm currently enrolled in Andrew's course. After learning many tools of the audio engineering trade from AZ, I can attest to the fact he is a sonic savant in regards to his mastery of every facet of the audio technical aspect umbrella. I've mostly worked as a mixing/mastering hobbyist for about twenty years, personally, and this is without a doubt, the most in-depth analysis and breakdown of the audio science I have witnessed. Be it equalization methods, studio room acoustic treatment, compression workflow, panorama strategies, microphone selection for intended use-cases, Andrew has got it covered. This is coming from someone who personally thought they were obsessed in the late-nights, tinkering away to experiment with different mixing plans, only to realise that there are indeed, levels to dedication of the craft and I have much to learn. A great recommendation from me, to partake on your audio engineering journey with AZ's instruction to assist you heavily in your improvement of listening skills and proper application in of mixing/mastering skillset.

It's nice to see that the SSL Native version does a better job of this. I already thought it sounded better than the Waves version and it's easier to level match, so I feel validated in this choice.
I have SSL products like: Alpha channel, Mynx, SSL 4000E EQ, 9000 Preamp, 9000 Dynamics, 9000 EQ, SSL UF1, SSL UF8, the second SSL UF8, SSL UC1. And I was an official tester of Native Channel Trip v.1. Now I'm helping SSL with their bugs on UF1 and UF8. SSL is a top notch brand. With some issues of course.
I discovered this problem on my own like this: I was managing my plugins due to lack of cpu power and I noticed I really didn't needed Pro-Q3 as I already had an SSL before it with a potent EQ so why the heck not boost 2 db at 3k there instead and spare some cpu, right? Well, no, 3k on SSL E by Waves is actually 3900 Hz, wtf. Opened up and analyzer and I was amazed, now I compensate in my mind before any moves on that EQ or Filters. Great video, much appreciated!
What you discovered is tolerance. Sometimes the value can be on point. But with this thing it can't be on point. It's always gives less cut than you set up. And they fixed it in their Duality console and Native 2 plugin. So it was not just tolerance. It was this shift by design in 4000 and J consoles.

Great! I have found out that on Softube SSl 4000 the low knobs frequencies and low mid knob frequencies don´t really match when you choose the same number! It is all very interesting!
truth. and try boosting some 800hz on the bx ssl e channelstrip: its more like 500hz! so yeah, mix wirh your ears not by numbers. although come one, its 2022! make them numbers right and get the gui userfriendly. its a PLUGIN not a HARDWARE!
Thank you Andrew. I'm actually annoyed. I've decided to stop using Analog style vst's. As you said, I did want to cut 49hz with an ssl, and its not doing what I trusted it to do. Now I have to check my waves f6 for its accuracy. Not only did I just purchase plugging doctor, I still have to run pink noise through my plugins. Smh. I recently set out to minimise my plugging list. So I thank you again for pointing out these serious flaws or frauds. I never considered myself a victim of commercial advertisement. But I've been duped again.
My test to match the curve with plugging doctor and waves pluggings with high pass filter 18db. F6 50hz = ssl channel 83hz F6 80hz = ssl channel 104hz F6 100hz = ssl channel 118hz F6 110hz = ssl channel 133hz Wow this is ridiculous. Yes you should use your ears but come on, we use tools to achieve certain goals, image if a ruler did this? You measure a door with your work colleagues ruler, he goes home, you build the door using measurements from your ruler. And the door doesn't fit 😆
I feel your feelings :) I can reveal tons of BS going in in audio engineering field and bust tons of plugins for bugs and issues. But I have to keep it for my students. My policy is to reveal only a bit in my videos as teaching is my main job.

I would gladly buy it if Softube Console One would offer an "SSL 4000 Corrected" plugin where the graphics were an accurate representation of what frequencies are actually being boosted or cut. It seems RIDICULOUS that modern plugins emulate known technical failings of vintage gear. Thanks Andrew!

AZ…. I’m a previous student of Andrew’s and this is another great example of how his course cuts through the hype and myths of audio engineering! What you’ve shown here Andrew are programming errors of these various plugin manufacturers…. Analog equipment will always have slight variations due to electronic component values (tolerance) BUT computer programmed plugins should NEVER be so imprecise!!! Thanks Andrew for another ‘ugly truth’…. 👍😊
A bit different point in comparison to what I showed. Actually I proved that it's not the tolerance in this video. It's the tendency of those earlier and later SSLs. And if a person want SSL 4000 sound these plugins should be not precise as the originals are. The point is just know when exact frequency you cut. Then you get the proper results and your ears learn frequencies properly.

Last year I did almost this exact same experiment with various SSL emus until finally settling on the SSL strip V2. I find it interesting in a good way that Solid State Logic modeled their own circuit but fixed what was a known quirk back in the day. The EQ is still the same punchy character that I remember -only more visually accurate. Also it seems they did not choose to model the console noise and/or a ton of saturation either. Hats off to Solid State Logic for actually improving on their original design and knowing the difference between novelty and practicality.
Actually SSL 9000 emulations don't have the same character in some things. And even 4000E and 9000E have specific difference. Add to it a lot of difference between plugins themselves and you get pretty different sounding plugins. But I can't share 90% of those nuances in the videos. I keep it for the students.
In this video not every SSL numbers are a lie. SSL Native 2 Channel Strip has pretty precise numbers. And IK Multimedia ones. So it will depend on the a particular plugin.
@@AndrewZeleno1 I understand that, but nevertheless, Waves, these are so popular and every youtuber shouts that “you should boost high frequencies”, so the question remains relevant.
Brown knob yes. I used only Black knobs with 18db\cot. And I had a proof on 12db\oct to prove it's not 12db\oct. The video was 45 minutes. With it. I cut that part.

I always thought the ssl had a 6db/oct filter because of how "ineffective" and I heard other people say you need to push it more (waves ssl specifically). For more precise, more low down the sub range I'd just use pro q or similar since I can't hear much bellow ~50Hz in my room. Thank you for testing and making this video, now I know more and can use the plug in better, even if thankfully I never had any problem or wrong expectations with it. The whole thing is crazy, just put the 50hz knob at 50hz plug in devs. We don't like hardware because of mislabel pots.

I wish they were matched. I do believe we should focus on our ears, but even then the resolution and accuracy of these knobs would only be better if they work as they indicate. I don't see a reason most developers have this mathematically simple filter wrong.
These SSL plugins are emulating analog desk gear as you know. This is not a bug as much as it is a marketing ploy. They will say "listen to how warm it sounds while highpassing". It gives the illusion of analog when really it is just a trick. When using this stuff, you gotta use your ears and not the writing on the knobs. I found this by accident when I was cutting masters and rolling off 83hz on average when it should have been 40hz.. You are spot on with this!
Not sure how you listened to my video. It's a bug not with ssl emulations. It's a bug with mixing workflow for people who uses SSL. If they plan too cut 50Hz and thhey want 50 Hz the equipment should provide it. Even SSL company closer to 2000 said "Oh sh*t. We have to fix it" and they fixed it in K and Duality. It's engineering. You don't build bridges based on the wrong numbers and they fall apart. From the other side read the comment section. 95% of people say "OMG. I need to know it. I thought it's precise". So "listen with your ears" is not an excuse for many uses of SSL equipment and plugin emulations. This comment section proves it. Secondly "use your ears" don't work in some the most important situations. Example: You need to cut low dirt on a vocal. Vocal doesn't have lows by its nature. So if plan to cut 80Hz? If you put 80Hz you cut less than 50Hz. You will not hear the difference because low dirt is very quiet and by ears on a vocal it will be difficult to say if you really cut 80 or 40Hz. So people need the precise value when they cut 80Hz they want to be sure it will be 80Hz.

You are welcome. Not sure what you mean. It's supposed to be like that. As I showed in the video SSL company addressed it in the newer versions of SSL which implemented in Softube 9000K and SSL Native 2. Some companies like IK put their own precise markings around the knobs. Majority of plugin manufacturers those who emulated 4000 series they kept the original design with wrong markings. The point of this video "know this nuance and use it accordingly". Suppliers don't need to give any feedback as it's supposed to be like that.
@@AndrewZeleno1 ok, I did not read it like you explain. I looked at it like, the frequency markings and “numbers” in the GUI are wrong. Of course that is good to know, as many including myself use the frequency markings as first go-to but as you pointed out these markings and actual frequency don’t match. For me that would be a reason to “fix” in the software, if I would be the supplier. I see lots of TH-cam instruction videos by well known mixing engineers that go for the markings and look confident the adjusted the EQ to their liking, but as turns out, they are adjusting others frequencies. I use the SSL V2 plug-in with a UC1 and did the test this afternoon, looks like SSL are fairly to almost spot on, but some frequencies are still “off”. Now I understand why I sometimes needed to adjust listening to what I was changing in the EQ. Like a small uplift of 3,5K on vocals to make the vocal standout in the mix and better to hear the words (sorry for my poor English). Thanks anyway, always thought the markings were almost spot on, still fine it strange. I started in the 70’s with analog gear and the EQ’s and mixing desk of good quality were honest which made you as engineer know what to use and adjust in seconds instead of fiddling about until you think you know that your spot on. Next to that, as you showed, some EQ,s can’t even adjust what needs to be adjusted, specifically high pass below 100Hz. I find that kind of worrying.

Interesting observations about such plugins. Why not just use any vanilla stock digital EQ for the high-passing? Just to remove low-end dirt you are not really looking for 'that analog SSL sound' or whatever, you're just cleaning up. I default to Cubase's built-in high pass filters that are just there on every channel for that purpose; no need for fancy plugins that try to emulate analog stuff. It just does the job.

What I really don't get: Why would somebody who cannot hear properly (for technical or experience reasons) decide to get an SSL EQ and not just mix with the stock DAW EQ?
It's not about what EQ you get. And I showed you in this video that some SSL plugins give pretty precise measuring. 90% can't hear properly. If you think you can hear properly below 50Hz you overestimate the reality. Additionally to ears, you need to have the right sub woofer, a proper set up of this subwoofer, proper pairing it with the monitors, proper unparallel walls or standing waves treatment, understanding that 95% of standing waves treatment and room modes is BS, the proper size and positioning ETC... Without all these things you can't hear properly. It's not about SSL VS stock DAW EQ. The video was about the fact that many SSL EQ shows the wrong marking around the low cut knob. Seems like you misunderstand the point of the video fully.
Watch the video please. Same bug. I never showed the same bug. I showed you IK Multimedia which shows its precise Hz reading where 50 Hz is 50Hz on it. Native 2 cut 60 with 50Hz position. Many plugins cut 20 with 50Hz position. Acustica Audio cut more with 50Hz with 50Hz and less than 300 with 300 Hz. Softube 92 on one filter and 150 on the other filter to get 50Hz. BX 9000J should 170 Hz to get 50Hz. As you can see I didn't show the same bug. The summary of this video: "20 different SSL plugins show different results. Some of plugins are precise. Some not. Some give even more cut. Know you plugin. And Enjoy. I'm a big fan of SSL". It's what was said in the video.

!!! I use the most fair approach. No prepayments. You get a free trial class which is a real-time class with my current students who are taking the course right now. If you like it, you enroll. But still no payments in advance. You will pay only after you start the course and you can do it during the first week of a month. Not in advance. Also we have monthly payments only. So you don't pay for the whole course. I will be proving that it's the top quality education class by class to keep you enrolled in. 99% of students finish all 9 months of the course. I've been doing it like that for 8 years in a row. Get the Free Trial class - it's a fair approach!

Hey! I measure a compressor and show how exactly it changes the frequencies of an instrument. So a compressor is EQ as well: th-cam.com/video/8kH3WqZBO2M/w-d-xo.html
This definitely highlights the importance of mixing with your ears especially when using plugins modeled after analog gear
That’s super helpful - thanks for a great video Andrew. Cheers.

Thanks Master, and keep up the good work.

great explanation

This topic was an eye opener for me. Most of us have been listening for years about the techniques of great mixing and mastering engineers without having these nuances into account. When they say “I always cut the vocal at 60hz” or “I always boost 3k+” we need to critically ask ourselves what exactly that means and not blindly do the same in our mixes. That is why Andrew’s course is so special: you will learn to think and hear critically, and, among many other topics, you will learn how many classic and modern audio tools behave and how you can apply their specific characteristics in your mixes. Thank you for another great video, Andrew.
Thanks Hugo. And see you on Thursday!

Hi Dima! Glad to hear from a former student.
Bear in mind the ssl native is modeled after the 9000 K which is their most modern circuitry
It was this shift by design in 4000 and J consoles.
fantastic video andrew!
Thanks!

F6 50hz = ssl channel 83hz
F6 80hz = ssl channel 104hz
F6 100hz = ssl channel 118hz
F6 110hz = ssl channel 133hz
Wow this is ridiculous. Yes you should use your ears but come on, we use tools to achieve certain goals, image if a ruler did this?
You measure a door with your work colleagues ruler, he goes home, you build the door using measurements from your ruler. And the door doesn't fit 😆

Very informative...thank you :)
You are very welcome!
Andrew, what about high cut/ high shelf filters on these ssl plugins? Do they also lie?
In this video not every SSL numbers are a lie. SSL Native 2 Channel Strip has pretty precise numbers. And IK Multimedia ones. So it will depend on the a particular plugin.
@@AndrewZeleno1 I understand that, but nevertheless, Waves, these are so popular and every youtuber shouts that “you should boost high frequencies”, so the question remains relevant.
Wasn’t the ssl e skerries not 12dB slopes?
Brown knob yes. I used only Black knobs with 18db\cot. And I had a proof on 12db\oct to prove it's not 12db\oct. The video was 45 minutes. With it. I cut that part.
Dude, this video was great and explains why I always had to cut more low end after the SSL E (waves/BX) cause it just still felt like there is too much left.

Thanks. Black Knob and 9000 has 18db/oct. Brown Knob has 12db/oct.

This is crazy! I wonder if the 3X on the Brainworx would make the HP be right. Or if the 3X is a whole new can of worms....
I noticed something weird with that plug in and stopped using it!
Don't stop using it. Just find out about this nuance and it will change the way you see old SSL high pass filter.
this is facking incredible
Thanks Eduardo!

Perfect, thanks for this info. Any feedback from the suppliers?

Hi Frans. Did you know how compressors affect frequencies so they can be a almost EQs? Here's the video: th-cam.com/video/8kH3WqZBO2M/w-d-xo.html
Я тоже замечал что waves ssl как-то низы фильтрует слабо, поэтому я часто могу на максимум выкрутить фильтр, чтобы прям лишнее срезать, а потом отпускаю его до нужного звучания.
Значит уши ваши работают!
what if its the frequency analyzer thats slightly off? : 0

this was a flaw in the(BLACK FACE) E series EQ... the amplitude follows the Bell basically...when they corrected this everyone complained...that is why there is an "E" button on the "J" series console to "break" the EQ... the G is a different animal.
9000E is not exactly the same as 4000E in many ways anyway. And G is not a constant EQ. So it's basically Focusrite/88R EQ.

i know i wasnt crazy i will cut 50hz with the ssl plugin an then put fad filter pro
Haha :)
:) Now you will add more. Of course depending of what SSL plugin you have.
We use many EQs for the character. Also each plugin anyway sounds a bit different due to many factors.

So some of them have much more lows then we choose, few close to the frequency we choose, some cut even more. Important stuff!
Thanks for watching!
@@AndrewZeleno1 Get some sleep, brother! 👍🏻
@@marcfrank7446 pfff. You spew some nonsense man.
Hm are you sure the real thing doesn't do this as well? Would be weird for all these different plugins to have the same bug.
I just tried myself. I cannot reproduce your results with Console 1 at least.
...and cannot reproduce with Waves SSL either?
