I LOVE how the performers are not rushing frantically through the piece, versus the vast majority of recordings out there. One can really hear the melody and the drama created by Bach's rich harmonies. Bravo and thanks for sharing this!
Glorious music and a marvelous performance! For the hair splitters, it's my understanding that Bach himself also arranged this piece for the lauten klavier, which is essentially a gut strung harpsichord designed to emulate the sound of the lute. So no, it was not arranged specifically for lute. It's probable that the four lute suites were composed and arranged for the lauten klavier with full expectation that lutenists will arrange them for the lute of which he clearly fond . Bach, himself was the great recycler, and made several arrangements of many of his pieces. He was not stuck in a rut of "must be this key, only this arrangement, and only for this instrument." I would dare say to purists that if Bach had had access to the modern synthetic or electronic instruments of today he would not shun them, but rather embrace them as additional output platforms for his seemingly boundless genius
Bach never fails. Beautiful arrangement. Was lovely to come home and wash my brain with this. The room seemed an excellent acoustic allowing the resonance of note; the range of bass to treble captured. Thanks indeed.
This is absolutely wonderful! The Sinfonia to Cantata #29 has been one of my most-favorite Bach pieces since I first heard it back in the late sixties when it appeared on the album, "Switched-On Bach" by Walter (now, "Wendy") Carlos. No matter whether it's performed on a Moog Synthesizer, a big pipe organ, or by a chamber orchestra, this is one of many great examples of how the music of J.S.B. can lift one's spirits! Not only have I selected it as a "Favorite" here on TH-cam, I have also shared it on my Facebook page in order that many others will hear it and enjoy it! Thank you, LUTEDUO, for posting this truly fine Bach composition!
Me, too. I was turned on to my absolute favorite Bach piece, Sinfonia to Cantata #29 by the original Switched on Back in 1969. An outstanding piece of music. I am struck in awesome of these 24 string lutes and the handwork of the artists.
Your lute mastery and accelerating performances are beyond anything I have had the pleasure of listening to.recently. The Luteduo is on par with the greatest duos. I recall Presti and Lagoya in their enthusiasm and inventiveness, you reach this level. Thank you.
Hermosa interpretación. El trabajo de estos artistas es impecable, es perfecto y de gran profesionalismo. Felicidades y mil gracias por regalarnos estas joyas musicales y su gran talento.
It has been several years since I first heard you perform this wonderful work and every time I return to it I come out feeling as if my soul has somehow been cleansed. Much has happened in the intervening time but I must try to communicate with you once again. Besides, I need more cds to pass on to those whom I have made aware of your spiritually uplifting work. Always wishing you the very best. John in Oregon.
@LUTEDUO And, I really do mean it, Anna. You and Anton are quite special people. Now, I can only assume, your talented daughter Alissa, has followed on the same path. When the human spirit intersects with creativity and ability, amazing things happen. I would call it 'Exploration and Discovery' when I'm painting. It needs to be honored and it is so satisfying when one reflects and knows that they have taken the right course in their life. I have no doubt that you and your family feel this way. I intend to get more of your cds when I can. My sister has a number of them. She loves what you do and has friends who love it as well. After my upcoming knee surgery and taxes, I will be doing a little splurging again and can catch up with your newer releases. Wishing you always the very best. Always your friend in Oregon, John Oberdorf
Absolutamente encantador. Buen juicio historisista y una ejecucion laudistica muy uniforme. Felicitaciones por tan interesante version. Enrique Millan Gomez (Profesor de Historia de la Música-Colombia)
So many strings ! Are you sure the Angels only play harps ? Looks & sounds like two have touched down here ! So wonderful ! Such a sparkling performance !Love every piece I've heard the two of you play together ! More, please !!
Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! Buch's Lute Suite IV Praeludium should be played like this. Even better than revered John William's performance. Amazing!
It most certainly is. Good spot. In fact, it's the great Jim Clark at the great Spa. Jim Clark's death was a huge loss to motorsport. At least we still have Spa although it's not quite the track it used to be.
Interesting: at about three minutes into this the second lute (if you will) plucks sometimes on the offbeat (same place within the measures). I don't recall ever hearing that done in this Sinfonia, which I've heard as many as 50 times in my life. If it is an innovation: a good idea. If it has always been in the score, than it was buried in the recording & I am enlightened. In either case: Bravo!
Wonderfully performed,! What an incredible thing to combine Bach with lutes! I notice that these lutes have bass strings off of the frets, like a theorbo. Can anyone tell me if the lute preceded the theorbo, or the other way around?
Its all the same family, lute was earlier, theorbo IS lute and developed along all the multistring lutes with baroque lute as a compendium of this process :-)
I do not believe that BWV 1006a is for lute. The handexamplar is clearly for keyboard, and no French Baroque Lute tablature is extant in Bach's hand. Furthermore, the key is incredibly awkward on the baroque lute with its d-moll tuning. Artists such as Paul O'Dette and Nigel North perform it in F-Dur - much more practical. This video is superb, by the way, as well as the BWV 540 one. Truly astonishing. And I adore the Antoine Forqueray Chaconne too - I've heard it both on gamba and harpsichord. Simply gorgeous!
Magnifique, magique. Je serais curieux de savoir comment sont accordés les luths. L'accord baroque ? Merci en tout cas. Please, Which is the scuardature ? Thank you very much.
Bach wrote this for the lute! The world does not revolve around what you or any one individual likes. Your comment is that of an undisciplined, ignorant child. If you don't like it, don't listen. Bieber is probably more to your taste - recall the sixteenth chapel comment.
I LOVE how the performers are not rushing frantically through the piece, versus the vast majority of recordings out there. One can really hear the melody and the drama created by Bach's rich harmonies. Bravo and thanks for sharing this!
Hari ng kundiman I totally agree!
+Hari ng kundiman You are right.
I was just thinking the same thing as I was reading this comment. This performance really breathes so well. Such superb sense of dynamics and tempo
Totally agree.
Just perfect! Reminds me the rain drops of automn.
Never heared such a beautiful version of Bach's 1006! Amazing, simply amazing!👋

Как всегда- удовольствие и умиротворение от вас, дорогие мои, и от музыки. Всегда рад встрече с вами. Б.М.
Anna & Anton, thank you, I just reopened the history of music to myself, again
Heaven! Most beautiful version of all 1006 performances worldwide!
Maybe...
Very cool, thanks.

This is a tremendous version of this wonderful piece of music! Big applause for both performers!

Congratulations to Richard Berg for his creation of beautiful looking and sounding instruments!
Schier unglaublich. Fantastisch. Große Klasse

What a wonderful performance! It left me in tears.
Thank you !!!
What a wonderful sound for this well-known sinfonia! I play it on the organ and it's fabulous, but lutes sound great, too--unique.
Tout simplement remarquable et de très grand goût.
Absolutamente encantador.

This piece also appears as the Prelude for the 4th Lute suite which is generally believed to have been arranged on / for the lauten klavier

Please, Which is the scuardature ? Thank you very much.
Thank you! It is in d minor/F major tuning, E and B flat in the basses
very pretty....sounds like classical guitar...
wich contry theis lute
Very nice! Which tuning is being used ?
this is d minor baroque lute tuning, thanks!
I'm an oboist/organist, and lute looks to be unbelievably difficult to play to me!
