Dominique Wilkins recounted his experiences of severe racism in North Carolina, where multiple racially charged incidents and targeted harassment occurred, including a cross burning and the vandalizing of his mother’s vehicle. Most disturbing was an incident where he was falsely accused of theft in a store; an episode directly linked to his decision to leave the state. This tense situation would have escalated significantly had it not been for his police officer cousin who was called in to handle the allegation. With his assistance, Wilkins and his family promptly left the state, relocating to Atlanta in fear for their safety. He did not return to North Carolina until 30 years later for the unveiling of his statue. Comparing his experiences in North Carolina and Georgia, Wilkins felt he could "breathe again," emphasizing the supportive community and the sense of safety he found after his move.

It amazes me that black men can experience one or two incidents of racist behavior by whyts and they go their whole lives being bitter. Or it effects them that they become murderous. We have to do something about this because the outcome for the man is bad. Bad for the family and the culture. Maybe that's why POC can't move forward. We carry this bitterness for decades. i've lived on NC for the past 20 years from boston area, and there is one thing you guys hate more than black people is northerners. even after 20 yrs. there are certian counties i still try to avoid. I've been told on more than one occasion, and i quote " i will defend a black person but used that word before i would you"

I’m from NC and still here. Below Charlotte. I love it here. I know where to go and where not to. Usually you can tell. Extreme country, all trees and no stores, but then again I’m 35. My parents are 80 and 82 and from here. My mom saw the Klan lynch her uncle in 1958, as she was a 15 year old girl. They never went to school with whites. Whites burned their school down multiple times. But they stayed here, got educated and did very well financially enough to raise us in a mostly white upper class suburb behind a gated neighborhood. 🙏🏽 but honestly racism is everywhere and it’s bad in some areas in the south still. We have family in Georgia as well. Same. That old way of thinking is still existing in some areas.

This was a sad pitiful story that you just told. And you would think that your own family would've moved away from whites because of what whites have personally done to your own family and the black community at that time. But your family decided to move even closer to whites and you and your family are proud of it! Black folks get them some money and move with the "uppity whites" to increase their generational wealth. What a horrible thing to go through. I’ve lived in the South my whole life, I’ve had a few incidents of my own here and there but nothing like what he had to endure. Clearly his family was not wanted there, they were very jealous of him. The cross burning incident would have definitely gotten me out of there.

I rode through Kentucky and Tennessee , I did not want to stop. Friends are with me to go eat breakfast , it was like the movies when everyone stares at you and you can hear a needle drop.
NC has not changed at all! That was the main reason I did not return there after being there a few years! The system there is 100% good ol’ boy! Very tough for blacks to get ahead. Even these days! Some may have gained a bit of steam, but those good ol’ boys will not allow them to obtain any real power!

I'm from Washington and I witnessed the cross burning as a child. I was about 4 or 5 at the time. I lived about 5 houses down from his. I was young but ill never forget that night.

I'm so sorry. I was born in Belhaven and moved to Washington when I was about 7 and then moved away when I was 13. I had some good times when I lived there but I'm very glad we moved to a more enlightened area of the state. I wish that even as a child I had spoken out more against some of the racism I saw among people I called friends at the time. It's deeply troubling that people I knew growing up turned out to be so hateful and close minded.
Say wat you will about Glad (and some of its probably true) but he is a skilled interviewer and has the most diverse array of interview subjects on the web.

So I've seen a few of these clips with Dominique Wilkins and I can't help thinking: If I ever become a grandfather, this is exactly the kind of man I would love to see as the other grandfather.
My high school had segregated prom. The blacks prom was high school and whites was elsewhere. This was in the 90’s and continued to the 2010’s.

Even in the 80s when I was a child racism was still rampant and ugly in the area. Sadly the most racist people I knew growing up in North Carolina fell into two camps.
1. Poor wh!te tr@sh, the most obvious racists that just have no class and no shame and revel in being ignorant fools. Sadly I had family members that belong in that category. I don't associate with any of them today and I'm profoundly embarrassed by their behavior.
2. Rich entitled conservatives, I had people like this in the neighborhood I grew up in. I was even friends with some of them, but even as a child it made me deeply uncomfortable when one of them would go off on a racist rant.
I'm glad my mother moved us to more enlightened areas of the state when I was in middle school. I wish the people I knew growing up did not behave in such a horrible manner out of fear, ignorance or greed.
Sadly, Georgia isn't any better. Leave Atlanta and klansville is in every corner. But most keep it subtle.

I spent my elementary school years in the town where Dominque won two high school state championships. I remember seeing the nets and signed game balls in the high school trophy case as a child. And my knee jerk reaction was, "WTF this can't be true!" But I allowed myself to stop and think about it and realize that yeah I'm pretty damn sure it is. I saw enough terrible behavior, racism and homophobia in my early years there to take him at his word on what happened.
Today, I'm profoundly embarrassed at the behavior of people I went to school with on a daily basis. I'm profoundly thankful my mother raised me not to be racist and that she moved me away from that town to more enlightened communities within the state. And I'm deeply sorry that Dominque and his family went through that. It's so hypocritical and terrible that people of all races in that area want to bask in the glow of Dominque and Gerald's accomplishments on the basketball court while at the same time treating them with hatred and suspicion off of it. I am sorry that even as a child I didn't speak up more against some of the terrible things I heard people say, some of the awful jokes I heard and some of the terrible behavior I witnessed. We as people in this country need to do better!

Atlanta has problems with racism but it's not nearly as bad as it is in rural Georgia or in rural North Carolina where Wilkins played high school basketball. I've live in both areas for decades and things are WAY WAY better in the Atlanta area. Not perfect by any stretch at all but way better.

I was born and raised in eastern NC and there was more to this story. Dominique was literally committed to NC State and decommitted at the last minute. University of Georgia boosters gave his family money, cars, jobs, etc so that he would play ball there.
Obviously this was before NIL deals. If you can imagine all the fans of NC State were mad because of the last minute change. He was driving around Little Washington in a red corvette right as he made this college change. I really don’t think it was racism. This was just like Lebron’s decision to leave Cleveland for Miami when fans started burning his jersey.
People in NC are crazy passionate about basketball especially back in this timeframe. I wish he would have just said that he made a business decision to attend Georgia as it would have changed the trajectory of his family instead of trying to paint racism as the reason why he left NC.
