I have a lot of respect for Pog (and his team) for having the courage to throw-down a big gauntlet that spans the entire season. No one would have blamed them if they had come out with a schedule that had the TdF and Olympics as the sole focus for Pog. On the TdF team strategy, I could see them doing something similar to Jumbo at the Vuelta (2023) by having so many quality riders to throw at the GC, essentially telling the other teams, 'we will keep throwing our guys at the GC in this race, if you plan to beat us, you have to beat every one of them.' If they do take that strategy and the goal of someone (anyone) from UAE winning to be their goal, then they could be extremely tough to beat.

@@saschaguy1370 Context matters a bit. Pogi was beaten by 7 minutes after not being fully prepared due to his injury. That said, even a prime Poggi is going to struggle to beat Jonas in mid Summer, hot, high altitude stages of the TdF. I think TJV is going to prepare Jonas solely for winning the tour as they did last year, so it's quite literally an uphill battle for Pogi and UAE. I reckon TJV have the TdF in the bag.

Side note with Kuss though is that the first 2 GT's were as domestique. And Kuss after the Vuelta said himself that acting as GC leader is a lot more tiresome, especially mentally and this was when he already was in a beneficial situation mentally with less pressure due to the other 2 TJV leaders.
This isn't to say Kuss' 3 GT's isn't impressive (it is and imo only a real GT rider like Kuss can do that), but to point out that the extra fatigue from riding as leader should never be underestimated.

    Regarding the Tdf GC discussion.
Against everyone else than Jonas, i would choose A. Yates beside Pogi as the GC leader, because he can beat them all, is reliable and consistant, but if Jonas is at TDF in topshape, it changes, because Jumbo and Jonas are not afraid because of Adam Yates, they don't care about him.
But i can imagine, that they are a little bit more unsure about Ayuso. The unkown, the flaire, the huge upside... Regarding the situation, i think, you have to try it with the Ayuso - Pogi double and Yates for early pressure and yes, also Leadoutwork.

Honestly think it’s great Pogi’s going to the Giro but not so sure about that TDF squad either .. usually the team knows how to work together when Pogi’s there but Ayuso has also mentioned that while Pogi’s the sole leader, he will not let any chances pass him by. That’s obviously fair enough and I’m excited to see how he measures up there as well, but I’m not sure that this helps their chances against Jonas. Only time will tell though.

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

They have tried for 2 years with Pogi as sole leader and now Pog does the Giro before that. Imo the new strategy to use should be a very strong climbing squad with riders that can have a reasonable chance of attacking and riding GC (like here).
If Visma again try their train tactic they can just wait untill eg. Van Baarle is halfway in his pull and then start raining attacks. If Visma just keeps riding in train, UAE just has to keep attacking and get 3 riders (like Almeida, Ayuso and Yates) ahead and have them ride train there. Such a "train war" should be won by UAE.
But even more, if those 3 riders are ahead, Pog can attack and Jonas would have to react, either dropping all his support and getting isolated while Pog has 3 more teammates with him or trust on Kelderman Kuss against all those UAE riders.
In the first scenario, there are 3-4 riders than can repeatedly attack Jonas, an even worse Galibier situation than Pog had in '22. If Jonas attacks to drop them, UAE should just let him and ride train behind him, essentially making it a 3-4 vs 1 "train battle" that realistically Jonas shouldn't win (unless it is too close to the finish).

Your asssumption seems to be that Yates, Almeida and Ayuso are all stronger than Kuss, AND that they will work together flawlessly AND that they can compete on the flat with the JV team AND that Jonas will not beat them by about 10 minutes on the climbs and TTS like he did last year while not always going full gas because of his battle with Pogi.

      I don't play cycling manager.
*Your asssumption seems to be that Yates, Almeida and Ayuso are all stronger than Kuss*
Not necessarily, though I think they are a similar level and Yates, Almeida and Ayuso together are stronger than VB, Kelderman and Kuss together. Even Sivakov is similar level as Kelderman imo.
*AND that they will work together flawlessly*
That is up to UAE leadership to make work. It isn't like they couldn't, other teams can work as a unit, so they should be able to do so too.
*AND that they can compete on the flat with the JV team*
Visma is stronger on the flat no doubt, but Pollit, Wellens and hopefully Bjerg instead of Soler too aren't weak either. And it isn't like all these UAE climbers are pure climbers eg bad TT riders weak on the flat. Besides it is in the mountains this tactic should be played out, on the flat it is just about limiting potential losses.
*AND that Jonas will not beat them by about 10 minutes on the climbs*
If that is the case, there is nothing they can do about it regardless, doesn't mean they shouldn't try to use a better tactic. Before Galibier everyone also said that they couldn't break Pog and it took only an injured Rog and Jonas cycle attacking him to achieve just that. In the end Jonas is still human with limited energy reserves.
*and TTS like he did last year*
Which was a very great one, the question is can he repeat it. Dumoulin afterwards said he never saw a better ITT before it and Jonas too commented on being able to exceed his power expectations. So equaling it isn't necessarily that easy. On a flat ITT he hasn't shown that kind of dominance either so far.
*while not always going full gas because of his battle with Pogi.*
Not sure what you're trying to say here.
Ofcourse Jonas remains the favourite to win, but he isn't unbeateable either. Anyone that acts like he is, just makes the same mistake people made with Pogacar 2 years ago.

I know this idea will be shot down by many, but will we ever see it mandatory that the top ranked riders must race all three grand tours? Is there too much free choice involved with which races riders get to ride? If Sepp Kuss can ride all three grand tours and win the final one of the three, to me that says, yes the top riders can do it. I can't say with full confidence if it would be better for the sport, but it would make the GC battles for each grand tour more of an even playing field.

*If Sepp Kuss can ride all three grand tours and win the final one of the three, to me that says, yes the top riders can do it.*
That is a very dangerous assumption and there are several reasons why it shouldn't be used as an example:
      1. Kuss is a GT rider through and through. He is good at the 3 weeks riding, more than at the one weeks, this is definitely not the case for everyone.
      2. Kuss rode the first 2 as domestique and that is a lot less stressfull and tiring, he himself pointed out how much harder it is riding as a leader, and this was when he was in a comfortable situation with 2 other leaders ready to take up the slack if he failed.
      3. Kuss essentially rode almost no other races, which definitely would be the case for all these leaders too. So no monuments, one weeks, championships, ...
      4. How will you decide who are the top ranked? At what point do you draw the line, and isn't it than unfair that the ones just falling out that requirement can focus on just 1 or 2 GT's instead and thus be fresher?
      5. Even now we still have no idea how well Kuss' body reacts to the 3 GT's in next season, he might have a lesser one for all we know and even if he doesn't, other riders in the past did have problems afterwards.
It would destroy the sport imo

Why not? If Pog wins the Giro-Tour double, he makes history. If he wins Giro but falls short at the Tour, it's fine cause he has a GT win for the first time since 2021. The important thing for Pog is to win the Giro first. Also, anything can happen at the Tour. Maybe Pog gains a lot of time in the gravel stage. Maybe Jonas cracks in a mountain stage. Things like crashes or illness can happen, which we obviously don't want, but it can happen.
It is really bold for Pog to try the Giro-Tour double. Even I'm skeptical of it but I appreciate him for trying something new. If he succeeds, he'll have a historic season and I would love to be a witness of that.

Entirely understandable to admit to oneself that Jonas is the better three week GC rider, and then go for the Giro and still compete at the TdF.

I honestly hate this. I want to see the best at their best at the Tour, not the best excuses for not winning the Tour.

Pogacar lost his mind lmao, He won't go any much races now nor Monuments but he will go in Giro? Jesus christ. Like how many days does he have to Rest and train before the Tdf 24? Jonas stomps him again my guess is 10mins plus.
