I hope that you like this weeks episode where I craft some wargaming rock rubble scatter terrain!! I really like the way they came out and I feel like these are an excellent build for someone that's looking to make use of old scrap pieces of XPS foam! Stay safe good folks! Lots of love! Also, remember to ROCK! 🤘💙💛💙🤘
I have to admit, in the first half I felt I was looking at some real bad amateur hour terrain. However I found at the end I was pleasantly surprised. Turned out good for a quick build.
Hahahahaha! No no it is amateur hour all the time! I do not work as a terrain maker! Thanks though! 👍😂
Hahah Leif your intros are fantastic, Love it! Also rocks are my favorite scatter to make, I have waaaaaaaaaay too many. Cheers!
Cheers man! Yeah and very useful as well I have to say! Thanks for the nice comment! :)
Cutting up the cardboard tube for drying the pieces was brilliant!
Love your videos!
Thank you so much! Yeah it's a simple but oh so effective way to make sure that things dry quicker! 👍🙂
They turned out great! I really like the little stands you made out of cardboard rolls, I'm always looking for something to put my terrain on, so I think I'll borrowing that one. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Please do! Good luck! 👍😊
This is amazing and a great use of my literal box of leftover scraps of XPS...
That's great! Check out the hills I made also if you have a bunch of bits of sheets and such! :D
@@DevsDice Saw that one as well. I sense my players are going to be in some rocky terrain soon!
Great looking realism and texture on those bad boys. Thanks for your work Leif. -GM Atank
Cheers man! :D
I know what I'm doing today! Those are some of the best rocks features I've seen 👌. The Might Leif Earthshaper gives us another awesome tutorial 👍🤘 Thank you brother!
Aw thanks John! I am stoked that you like the video and the result! 🤘
@@DevsDice my pleasure as always Leif!
@@DevsDice hay Leif, just out of curiosity. How many minis would you say you have unpainted?
Hahahaha! I was out of the house running some errands and I think I have well...hundreds...I don't think I am in the thousands - yet :D
@@DevsDice Damn!!
I never thought of mixing glue and flock like that. I always try and dab glue on and pour or sprinkle it on then dump the rest back in. Thank you for that tip alone!
No worries! Yeah I sort of mix and match a bit. It depends, sometimes I want to almost "spackle" on the moss if it's supposed to his creases and folds! Thanks for commenting! :D
You're quickly becoming my favorite terrain crafter! Your creations look so good and the method is so straightforward! I am looking forward to more. I'd love to see you make some unique foam structures/ buildings.
Thank you kindly Connor! I have a backlog and in that I do have some various buildings and constructions so it will come! :) thank you again for the nice comment!
Thanks for the video. Your stones turned out very realistic and, I'm sure, look incredibly cool on the gaming table.
I've been painting miniatures for about a year now, but I still haven't mastered the _"dry brush"_ technique. I always end up with _"ower brush"_
Thank you so much! Yeah the over brush technique and dry brushing are very similar. It all comes down to how much paint one has in the brush and how much one "paints"! 👍😊
Looks great! It makes me jealous! I believe I know what I’ll be doing this Saturday
Hahaha! Thanks MattTheMonster! Go for it! Have fun and thanks again!
Seriously the results you get are unreal. Great video!
Hahaha! Thank you so much Kyle! These rock rubbles were fun to make! 👍😀
Greatest beginning part ever, ive got you now gave me darth vader vibes
Haha you picked up on that! 🤣
Im starting out making some terrain for a board and your channel is a godsend. Subscribed.
Aw that is awesome to hear Gino Risso! Thank you so much for your kind words and welcome to the channel! 👍💙💛💙
Great moss technique, i usually only paint up lines of glue and add the flock on that, but this looks way better and lively
Thank you so much! Glad you like it! 👍😃
Liked for the hilarious intro, subbed for the quality content!
Haha! Thank you so much and you are most welcome! 🤘😃
Really useful rock outcrops! Great work!
Thanks again Ken! Yeah these I also use on my modular river tiles! Super good and simple build! Thanks again Ken! 👍🤘🙂
I'll keep this simple....Rock is love, Rock is Leif.
...As our mighty warriors begin thier delve into the thick of the Westerholm Forest proper. The terrain is dotted with tall pine trees and mossy rocks still wet from the annual melt of Spring. Patches of slushy snow patterned on the muddied forest floor causes each step within this forest to be more labored as the adventurers boots stick inside the thick mud. The forest feels uneasy and empty. The missing signs of wild life leaves each warrior with a nervous void in their hearts.
A voice echos from the depths of the forest. "Intruders tread within my forests...take care of them my pets.."
Roll initiative.
Hahaha! Freaking awesome man! Just plain old awesome! What leapt out from the shrubbery? What was that voice? We'll see next week! :D
@@DevsDice FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON D-&-D!
*Que Dragonball Z music*
@@ForrTheXP Hahahaha! Personally I want some old fantasy music but I am open to Dragonball Z :D
@@DevsDice Welllll it's just the old catch phrase at the end of all the old DBZ shows.
Yeah there you caught me red-handed! Never watched DragonBall Z. :D
Finally got a chance to watch and once again you nailed it. My hobby time has been really limited of late, but this looks like something I could do to keep the creative juices going.
Great job!
That's great! Yeah these are very simple to do and you will get a lot of use whenever you want any outdoors scenario! Thanks for the comment! :)
This video rocked.
Hahaha! Thank you kindly! :D
Great work as usual Leif. These look fantastic. Thanks.
Thanks Shawn! :)
I made a set of these to use up offcuts. Great project. I really like the flock and glue method too. Gonna try that more often.
That's awesome Tim! I am happy this project helped! Oh yes! The flock-paste is a good thing whenever one wants moss and such! 👍😊
I really like the simple layout of your builds partnered with the attention to detail in the end result.
Thank you very much! I do like to keep it simple but practical and ideally looking somewhat nice! :D
I wanna ROCK! Great vid again man, loved the intro and I do like how crafty it was to use cut up toilet roll to hold your pieces while drying. Will be taking that idea.
Thanks Nate! :D
Your videos are great. Once I become decent enough at basing, I’ll move onto building your excellent scatter terrain. I finally got my grass flock that I ordered a few weeks ago, so I’ll be basing today. Be safe and well, Leif. Oh, and I absolutely LOVE the opening with the Twisted Sister bit!
Haha! Thank you Ronald! That sounds great man! Have fun with the basing! What sort of flock did you order btw?
Devs & Dice - I bought Army Painter Field Grass and Steppe Grass. I’m guessing that there are a million different products available from a wide variety of sources, but I’m trying to keep local stores alive during the pandemic. Your big Parsley shaker full of flock is awesome.
Yeah for sure, same here, I have two stores in my vicinity that I visit almost weekly! :D
You rock! Looks great as always.
I think a river should be the next addition to this terrain setup. A narrow shallow one and a wide and deep one.
Haha! What a great idea Niklas (stop looking at my backlog!) ;)
Very cool rocks. Love the new Logo!
Thank you very much Tim! On both accounts! :D
A good tip about the breaking the surface tension with IPA (although pretty much anything which can do this also works. I add a drop of dishwashing liquid to my glue slurry and it does the same thing.). It allows the glue mix to flow in and around, instead of just sitting on top as a skin.
That's awesome! So I might just add a drop of that into my mix! Great suggestion! Thanks for the tip! :D
Jeez man you are very talented! Thanks for some inspiration!
Thank you so much P Led, you are very kind to say so! 👍😊
Love your channel, man. These scatter rock formations are top notch. I'd like to see some desert terrain ones, too. Thanks for the inspiration! Cheers, --Bo
Thanks again Bo! Yeah different biomes is something I will look into next year for sure. I am trying to first be done with the forest terrain and I have one large thing left to do... 😉
Outstanding job man, very impressive!
Thank you so much Angelo! 👍🙂
Consistently incredible work, great stuff yet again. Definitely worth your time investment.
Thank you so much! I am so glad that you like the videos I produce! :D
I love your intros and energy!
Haha! Thank you kindly! I try my best! ;)
@@DevsDice Instantly subbed & followed your Instagram. Could you enlighten me as to what kind of flocking was used for the paste please?
That's awesome! Thank you! Regarding the flock I used, here is all the information I can see on the old packaging: ZITERDES 12124 FLOCK, HELLGRÜN. After some google-fu I am pretty confident that this is the one:
www.ziterdes.com/master-basing-battleground-flock-light-green-6012124.html
Hope that helps! :)
@@DevsDice thank you!
No problem! Happy to help!
Awesome job, they look great!
Thanks Andrew! Yeah these are good and fast to do! 👍😊
I have watched several of your videos and LOVE them. I’ve read through as many comments as I could stomach and couldn’t find my answer, also I’m baffled no one else has asked, WHERE CAN I FIND THE MUSIC?? Who wrote it, it’s incredible!
Thank you kindly, I choose this music with great care from Epidemicsound.com. The artist name is "Adriel fair" and I love the mix of medieval style music with the modern and joyful touch! :D
good wargames terrain. nice work. I especially like the way you keep "cheap and easy" out of the titles of your videos. nuff said.
if you where to put a scratch built starter wargames terrain kit up, what would you put in it? hills? how many & what size? rocky out crops? trees? how many, what type? what combination of "stuff" would provide a good basis to cover most types of engagements?
It could be a wargamer's "can of worms" to open? (if you understand the expression)
Hahaha! Yeah there are some "cheap and easy" keywords out there I guess!
Wow! That's an excellent question which requires some thought and customization depending on what game and what environments you usually use. I know for my forest-like scenarios then bushes, hills and trees have been immensely popular. Again sizes would depend on the most common size of board which would give us an estimate of how many hills. I am sure that one can deduct a good answer to this huge question but it would need some time and information. :)
Man as rocks go these are awesome
Cheers Chris! Always good to have a project to use scrap foam! Right? 👍🤣
Great Opening!
Hahahaha! Thank you so much! 👍😂
Nicely done 🥰
Thank you Stephen!🤗
I like these however I would use a more diverse mix of colours in the flocking plus use a few grass tuffs to sell the effect a little more. Great job.
Thank you and good tip! I might look into that! :D
Fantastic idea
Thank you kindly! 😊👍
Fantastic! This is kind of similar to how I do rubble piles. This sort of thing looks great on the table. Are those sliced toilet paper rolls that you use for drying?
Ah nice! How did you do yours? Why yes it is! I mention it at some point in the video! Just a cheap and easy way I found to make sure that things don't stick and get's good circulation or air around them!
@@DevsDice apparently I wasn't listening well 😅. I promised I watch the whole video. I basically just use Liquid Nails instead of hot glue and build/mount them directly on thick construction paper (just to make the bottom nicer). My painting process is different though... Anyway, just kinda similar. Great video man!
Ahh that sounds cool! I have no idea what liquid nails is but it sounds gnarly! :D Thank you kindly! 🤘
If your looking at this for stop motion animation add wires inside of each rock and don’t fully connect them (only if you what characters to be able to trip and start some sort of avalanche)
I wasn't but I have to say that it is a bit interesting to hear you talk about this. As a child of the 80s stop-motion has a special place in my heart! :D
I love your videos because the techniques that you often use are very compatible with stop motion(sets and such)
REALLY? Huh.... I have to say that my interest is peaked! :D I need to look into this a bit more :D
I have a playlist with a bunch of stop motion related videos on my channel
Love all your terrain videos ❤️
Thank you kindly! I have more on the way! :)
Nice video and easy to follow..thanks
Good to hear that it was helpful Chief Churpa! 👍😊
Beautiful!
Thank you so much Harriet! :D
@@DevsDice absolutely the best rocks out there.
Better be careful about your brilliant intros though. You’re setting the bar pretty high for yourself!
Each one is its own form of genius.
For what it’s worth, I like terrain builds more than painting vids. ...just throwing that out there.
Thank you so much Harriet! Haha not so sure I am the careful kind when it comes to my intros - we'll see! :) Thank you so much for liking them! Yeah I can understand liking terrain more than painting, I am sure you're not alone in this. That being said, I will mix it up with what I feel like for the moment, it helps me with staying passionate! :)
Great video
Thank you kindly Christopher!
Great work! Can I ask where you got your turn table from?
Thank you Karlos! Of course! I bought mine from a Swedish store: kaffebrus.com/
Hi, thank you for sharing your magnificent work. Im really new, and have a question. Do you have a base for all of this and if yes how do yo prepare it? Could be modular?
My pleasure Myriam! I do not have bases for the rocks specifically because I wanted these to be able to be put on anything e.g. grass, ground, water etc. Hope that answers your question! 👍😃
We don't have XPS foam in the Caribbean. Can I use polystyrene foam instead?
Well, I assume you're referring to expanded polystyrene? You could but I would then want to use a hotwire cutter just to get some sharper edges. And I would also argue that it would be a lot less durable. But hey, use what you have! 👍😊
Does anyone know what the name of the song he does during the final product showcase at the end of his videos is?
Hahaha! Niklas Johansson - Call of the North again! 👍😉
awesome
Thank you so much Sandra! 🙂
Can I ask, what kind of ink do you use in the spritzer bottle?
Also what flow agent do you use in it?
Or course Lars! I use just normal artist inks from Liquitex e.g. black and a bit brown. For the flow agent I use flow improver! 👍😊
@@DevsDice Thanks a lot! Appreciate the reply
😂🙌🏻 and again. Rock on. 🤘🏻
Hahaha! Thank you! You are very kind! :D
when you use the word " one inch figure " i was so confuse but as in a funny way i was like wait do you mean its medium size creature in dnd terms or the mini is 1inch tall. but oh well i think the video is educational enough im sure anyone trying this will figure out the scale anyway :)
Hahaha! That's true! My bad! I think I was referring to minis where the base is 1 inch! Which yeah not a great measurement! 😂👍
Is that a medium flock you're using to make the paste?
Not sure what medium flock is but the one I am using is the "sawdust"-kind in this video but you can use foam flock as well as long as it's fine. Check out my latest video with the Gallows Tree and you'll see that I use some foam flock there. That being said, the sawdust-kind is a bit easier to work with imho. Hope that helps! Have a good one Cary! 👍😄
Ahhh.. ok. More like a fine consistency then. Thank you. Your videos have quickly become my go to for terrain crafting.
Yes I would say so, the smaller it is, the more "paste-like" you can get it. Thanks Cary, I appreciate you saying so! 👍💙💛💙
have u ever made cave walls
As in dungeon cave walls? No I haven't, generally we use the negative space as "dungeon or cavern"-walls. So haven't really seen a point with it...yet! 👍😉
4:10 use an IPA alcohol.
My dumb ass: of all the types of alcohol, why would a hoppy beer possibly be the choice here?
Hahahaha! Yeah I had the opposite reaction when I heard that abbreviation in the context of bear! "But wait, isn't that stuff dangerous to drink!?" 👍😂
Älskade introt!
Tack så mycket Fredrik Hassel! Kul att du gillade det! 👍😊
another comment for another watch!
Thank you kindly! 👍😂
Fucking awesome intro! lol
Hahahaha! It just dawned upon me! 👍😂
