People fail to realize whitewashing isn’t just done to darker skin characters, a real common example of whitewashing were those anime adaptations like ghost in the shell and death note where previously Asian characters were played by white people
hi! as somebody who sees race and ethnicity seperately (i believe that asian is an ethnicity here, same as hispanic, and etc. white and black are simply just races. so i'd say "white asian" or "black asian" instead of just "asian" i mean, they are still asian.) i still think that characters should definitely be played by actors who are the same race as the character for more accuracy. this is my view on things.
A good example of a word that’s lost all meaning is woke. It used to mean to be aware of injustice and discrimination and to be careful as a minority in a frankly dangerous world, but now it just means whatever conservatives don’t like. Lost all meaning
Another one I can think of is goon it can either mean ‘a stupid and foolish person’ or ‘a violent and aggressive person hired by like some mafia boss or whoever to intimidate or harm a singular person or multiple people’ Nowadays it can mean oggling or going googly eyed whenever a woman, fictional or not, doing something sexy(you think of some examples)and people going absolutely batshit bonkers. Biggest example of this is Eve from Stellar Blade and the whole ‘franchise’ in general, especially in advertisement
With the pixel art I’ve been doing for like 2-3 weeks, there are VERY few colours for any skin tones, both for white and black skinned characters, which is why 99% of human-characters I’ve drawn all have the same shade used for the skin. I can’t change what shades are available for what I create. If I draw a human-character I try to cover their face/hands/legs as much as possible just because I can avoid any controversy with what I make.
Gotta love how whenever someone is complaining about this or that, it's usually a group of people who have absolutely nothing to do with it (for example, White Americans getting angry about "cultural appropriation" towards Mexicans even though they themselves aren't Mexican)
Can't Inklings and Octo's change their skin tone anyway? That's what it says on Inkipedia. "Inklings possess the ability to change the colour of their skin and eyes at will,"
I don’t see how people see, for example, the Marina drawings as whitewashing. To me, she is still Marina. I can still see the color in her. Man this society is so toxic. I agree with the gay ship thing. It’s not even hurting anyone oh my gah 😭
When I draw, I usually use a regular pencil (so sketching), and since I'm not exactly a professional at shading, I try to make it obvious when I'm drawing a person of color or when someone has dark colors in their hair/clothing But sometimes, I don't feel like coloring in some stuff, so I leave the outline and call it a day. I really hope that isn't considered whitewashing, because people are offended by everything these days.
I feel guilty for talking about this since I’m whiter than a sheet but I agree. I would also like to share an experience I had for reference. One time, way back in the good old days of 2020, I was in the danganronpa fandom *cue tomato throwing and booing,* and there was this one character in the game (Hajime Hinata). For context, he’s East Asian/has light skin. However, people in the fandom drew him a lot with A LOT darker skin, so much so that people would literally be cancelled for drawing him with his canon skin color because they forgot what he looked like canonically and they considered it “whitewashing”. And then they blatantly ignored all of the racist things the game/animes have actually done or implied.
2:15 Brooo They are not being whitewashed!!!!! Nintendo's just trying to stick to the slightly pastel/pale/watercolour palette (I think) that's why they look "white washed" 🙄You can see none of the colours are bright in most of the splatfest art Like they're not using shades like "Hot pink" but instead using Lilac, Beige and Mint Green Also explain to me how Pearl can be white washed if she's already white...?
When people say whitewashing they shouldnt misunderstand it like how people often say the official nintendo art is whitewashing when its just desaturation, before talking about racism contriversies, people, like yumes studio, should probably unferstand better, even the fact she is like 29 years old, I think people should get better understandings to subjects before saying about them. Also great video, keep up the great work, and anyone who reads this: have a wonderful rest of your day:)
in art making dark skin tones look good is way harder, if you don't properly shade it you'll get the mr popo effect if the character is really dark. And then you get ppl upset over that. same with plushies for example, just anything you can't shade properly. Black lines will also be harder to see for example. (a line that defines the nose or mouth for example) Thus you need proper shading if the character is really dark. i think because splatoon's art style isn't shaded properly you'll get them going for lighter colors. i only do line art and i'm not interested in doing more then that, if i fill bucket a dark character/person and don't shade it (which i can't i haven't learned that) then i think it's over for me lol
i keep seeing those memes where pearl and marina's color pallettes were swapped. except that they swapped the skin color too, so that now marina looks white and pearl looks black. obviously, both blackwashing AND whitewashing are bad in their own rights. what is wrong with the community
I remember when Chris Pratt got revealed to be playing Mario in the Mario Movie, I saw some people were complaining that they were "whitewashing Mario." Which like...what? How do you whitewash Mario, he's already been pale as heck since day 1 in 1981. When we get to the point of talking about hecking Mario being whitewashed, ya know the term "whitewashing" has lost its actual meaning and is just being thrown at anything.
I don't get how people are complaining about whitewashing and darkwashing when inklings and octolings can CHANGE THERE SKIN COLOUR BY WILL!!! (Omg that's shocking information!?!?!) And this also applies to real life octopi and squid I shall stop the stupid arguments by saying a simple fact
How appropriate (in the worst way) that your first death in the footage of a video about whitewashing was to someone using...THAT...banner... edit: I'm not sure if I agree on the comparison to queer art of not-canonically-confirmed-queer characters: One is interpreting a character as a minority regardless of if it's canon or specifically not canon, while genuine whitewashing is doing basically the opposite, except the character is visibly and explicitly a racial minority - your actual comparison with "small changes" is even weaker than that though, as, if the change is small enough, it's not whitewashing at all, and you're comparing interpretation to the act of color choice itself, which literally doesn't make sense

Uh, sorry to break it to you but when asked the Japanese said they didn’t care and said that the actress looked like the character.
we don’t speak of the marina plush…

Stolen from AAVE which explains too much imo.
