Gotta love how the game's like "Don't feed Grandpa bad things or flesh" and Mark _immediately_ feeds Grandpa a battery, some insulation, then gives flesh at the first opportunity.

I find it really interesting that this little girl gets exactly what she wants even if she doesn't really understand what happened. Like whatever this creature was (probably a demon from some of the in game books and such) legitimately gave her a happy ending. They probably did it by invading her parents body's or replacing them but regardless she got a loving family. That's oddly wholesome and horrific.

It's what that demonology article in this was talking about, that demons are "fed" by specific acts, either the act of worship or the act of chanting or the act of sacrifice but heaven also "has its heel on them" and makes it so demons have to abide by specific terms. If you follow their terms or contract, they get well fed but they also can't do anything to you and must fulfil their end of the bargain. If you don't follow the steps correctly or don't uphold your end of the contract or bargain, the demon gets to devour you. From Adrienne's conversations with whiskers, it seems like whisker's standard operating procedure was to mimic an individual's desires to lure them in and consume them. Whiskers seems to primarily feed off thoughts and desire, but also needs some food or flesh to build with as alluded to with the "looks like it can use some vitamin C from a kiwi" part. If an individual's desires are particularly strong it grows a connection with them and it seems to telepathically urge them into the contract. It seems to be some kind of telepathy because individuals aren't afraid and have an urge telling them what to do.

Whiskers/grandpa mentioned that what he says is influenced by those around him. He was also contractually obligated to fulfill Adrienne's wish. But I wonder if Adrienne's childlike innocence somehow influenced whiskers in a way that Dr. Hart (her actual grandpa yes I know) and his team couldn't. I wonder, perhaps, because the team envisioned whiskers as a horrible flesh eating monstrosity, even unintentionally, that that's what whiskers tried to repeatedly grow. But maybe because Adrienne had only innocent ideas/visions, maybe that's why whiskers was more passive. One of the notes warned to avoid meat even being in the same room as whiskers, and no where near it at all, let alone feeding it. Adrienne had meat and whiskers did nothing but smell and wait until it was fed willingly.
Humans are naturally weary of things they don't immediately recognize. The brain runs wild speculating every possible danger in an unidentified lifeform, and forms judgement without even knowing. Whiskers and the researchers were keenly aware of that. What they thought of it molded it, sculpted it. Perhaps it had no ill intent. Perhaps it's one duty was to abide by a contract humans make with it, and grow accordingly.
All speculation, it's 22:30 here and I've been up since 0400 and I'm a bit sleep deprived, but this is an incredibly captivating game. Games definitely does a fantastic job of creating a world to dive into.

Brilliantly put! I absolutely agree. Adults have prejudices, judgements, bias, etc. Children end up learning from them. The same way the creature was learning from the adults. When it comes to children learning from children, the imagination runs wild and can be amazing in ways adults have forgotten. And that's what Adrienne did with the creature, in a way.

Yames is honestly a master of disturbing imagery and themes in his games. Both Discover my Body and Growing my Grandpa deal in different types of body horror. Discover my body deals with the change of a persons body into something unrecognizable, all the while the person is happy about it. Growing my Grandpa deals in the transformation of a cosmic horror into something that could tangibly be a person. Both of these manage to somehow be equally disturbing. To me, Yames has perfected his craft, and I'm honestly so excited for Discover Our Bodies.

After seeing the "Bad" ending I think it is safe to assume Whiskers left the imperfect shell of Grandpa and has moved into the parents' bodies, molding them into what Adrienne wanted.
What I find very interesting is that in Bad end Whiskers invades Adriennne's body but since she is accepting of the situation they seem to have a symbiotic relationship; the parents no doubt resisted being invaded in the "Good" end and so were violently overwritten.

For everyone who's saying "don't feed it meat" I was initially thinking the same thing but then I realized all of those guidelines were for studying whiskers and then incinerating it to restart the process back to the beginning. If Adrienne continued nurturing whiskers but didn't initialize and finish a contract nor incinerate it to "reset" it, whiskers would have eventually consumed her because that is it's nature. The only easy way out for Adrienne was to initiate and complete a contract with whiskers. The act of feeding it flesh is symbolic of intent to initiate a contract and then the act of offering her blood was symbolic of offering her own flesh to begin the contract.

on the other side of things, I think it's more likely that it doesn't have any rules at all. The reason it obeys contracts is because that's what people *_thinks_* it does. If you never feed it meat then it shows that Adrienne is scared of it and keeping it contained, whereas if you *_do_* feed it meet then it's treating it with a naive innocence that it must be okay and normal. If you feed it meat then it shows you aren't scared of it, therefor you don't percieve it as something scary, and so it *_isn't_* something scary. On the other hand if you don't feed it meat then it means that you are scared of it, or more accurately what it could become; you *_percieve_* it as a threat so it *_is_* a threat.

Instead of jumps scares it relies on a constant stream of unnerving and deeply uncomfortable images and scenarios that physically repulse you yet it is interesting enough to keep you playing to find out how it ends by morbid curiosity. I thought pretty much everything he said in that final section was really interesting, and very, very well put. I love that he explained he felt he could be honest because he was her grandpa and that he loved her, so he could trust her. Even though he still recognized that he wasn't REALLY her grandpa. This game feels emotional when I get to 26:13 where the Growing and developing Grandpa communicates with the player like a loving and caring friend. It is a monster with a big heart, with inalienable love and understanding for his creator, and the dedication to be anything his creator wishes him to be. It's so heartwarming, doesn't matter if the creature is grotesque and unappealing. Growing My Grandpa reimagined Frankenstein in a biological way.

The core (whiskers) produces a segment of itself which develops into a set personality by becoming What the person in front of It wants It to become (a lure for Whiskers). While the lure might be limitedly sapient It is mostly empty and speaks for the demon itself.
"Grandpa" loves the girl because she wants granpa to Love her, still he lets her know that he (since he is just a lure) cant do anything to protect her if the actual entity (Whiskers) decides to atttack

I think that the reason whiskers acts and appears differently towards Adrienne than towards the researchers, is that the researchers were experimenting by thinking and wanting it to be something. Adrienne genuinely believes that whiskers is her grandpa, not whatever it is. Therefore its transformation and attitude is much more genuine. Because Adrienne is much more genuine.

I know this comment is old, but I feel like it's less that Grandpa is manipulating her, but rather acknowledging that it is a production of Adrienne's own mind, that it's actions are not it's own, but a result of what she wants to hear and see.

I think it’s an interesting concept, that a little girl is tricked by a demon into helping become a powerful self sufficient being, all the while she has no idea what’s actually going on and is eager to trust it as she feels alone in her broken home. Really well thought out storyline

    • @Altair1243WAR

@@Altair1243WAR This point of discourse is basically the point of all the antique “demon” pages in the game that predate Dr. Hart. The way everyone interpreted the creature was an affect of their time, the scientists see it as an alien monster with a Gremlins construct and they die trying to study it. In the past, people thought it was a hell spawn and warned vehemently against making a deal with it unless you’re desperate and you could die. Adrienne doesn’t understand what it is much more than she understands other adults and why they behave oddly, so without the hesitance and the dire nature of “confronting a devil at a crossroads for a deal in exchange for yourself,” she simply saw it as taking care of a family member and that inherently fulfilled the parasitic need of the entity to be “loved,” which is clearly fed off of from the way it would bring to life widower’s wives as the graveyard. And unlike those that came before, she had no expectation of what she’d get in return, just a prayer for her family to be happy.

    • @EatyourWafflesplease
      @EatyourWafflesplease 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

@@Altair1243WAR could be argued that the creature didn't quite know what was happening either. it seemed to have only vague recollections of the past, disjointed and without proper context. it blatantly told adrienne that it would hurt her in some way if she didn't fulfill the contract, really it was honest about things every step of the way, it just didn't have the ability to communicate it in a way she would understand due to how much of it operates off instinct. we don't know if the creature is truly malevolent or just another natural predator acting off instinct, and I think that's a very charming aspect of the game.

I really love this game. Here‘s what I‘ve been able to deduce for some folks who might wanna discuss story beats:
The game is intentionally vague about whether or not Whiskers is a supernatural entity (demon, devil, etc.) or a biological predator hunting off instinct. It used both heavy religious symbolism in the documents, mainly from the way cultures who previously encountered it dealt with the creature while also showing the research and biological concepts applied by the grandpa and his university team. The notions you teach it during the language teaching parts seem to be obvious symbolisms tying into the games plot „meaning, language“ etc. all relate to the theme of theory of mind and how the entity seems to both understand the world around it through implicit mimicry, but one could not be sure whether or not it was just an instinctual automaton that merely mirrors instead of understanding. It also asks the question of what one means by „understand“. I really love the tie ins with the neuroscience bits by the gamedev, particularly regarding shamans who have facial blindness being required to deal with the creature because it cannot feed off of their representations of other people for further cycles. These themes seem to also be underscored by the split between its shell and inner core. The core appears to be quasi static and somewhat conscious retaining some information about previous cycles throughout its regenerations, as it mentions memories of being buried (possibly by shamans) in a graveyard sometime in the stone age (it is confused by all our modern concepts and complications of mind), while the shell seems to be more dynamic but also animalistic and in control (the core grandpa when being released speaks of „being used“ by the outer shell and that he cannot resist against its urges). The core might also simply be used by the shell as an anglerfish would use its antenna, as a lure so it might not be conscious at all (which the scientists constantly doubt). This is all just scratching the surface of a game that has fantastic visuals, atmosphere and eery gameplay. A true marvel of a horror game!
There‘s simply so many themes I don‘t know where to end!

It just occurred to me: Whiskers is gone, probably crawled through the vent at the spot it remained dormant. The girl commented that there was another vent at the top of the room where her Grandpa now resides. Whiskers is Grandpa.
Additionally, there was talk about setting up a grave to be a "demon trap". When Grandpa is interviewed (10:32) he talks about the grave, says about the shepherds and how this all occurred before the stone buildings and such.
In other words: Child is growing an ancient shapeshifting monster that lusted after blood and flesh, attempting to change it into a loving grandpa, oblivious to the danger this thing poses.
And then Mark fed it meat...

This is the good ending, the creature needs flesh to develop.
If you don't give it any then you get the bad ending as you stunted it and it takes it by force, first chance it has.
      Either way, it gets out.
The lore also goes that this thing is shaped by your perception of it.
Adrienne saw it as family and genuinely cared for it, weirdly. (She's just a kid and has clearly not seen horror movies yet)
The scientists saw a monster and feared it. It's constant adaptations and experimenting meant their repulsion grew stronger, despite their understanding and it's containment.
The time between Adrienne's parents moving into the house and her actual Grandpa's death was in the years, meaning the creature had time to reset. (Which normally takes a full month with no one nearby.

This game's lore is fascinating. So this is a thing that copies the thoughts and wishes of humans, and has been alive for maybe longer than humanity existed. People have clearly used it to bring back their loved ones, but maybe also less benevolent things like murder. In addition to nutrients and knowledge, it needs flesh, and a blood offering. Then it grants the wish if possible- makes better parents, makes a dead person, makes someone fall in love with you.
If Mark hadn't fed it flesh and gave it blood, I think Adrienne might have been dead. That's what its comments suggest.
What I'm most curious about is if the parents are now part-Whiskers, and what that will entail.

Mark's videos bring me so much joy......My gf's tracker on her phone was registered going 110 mph today and she wouldn't respond......I broke down crying and I saw the video and it kept me from losing it. I love Mark for every video he does and I want to say to everyone here have a good day.

To summarize for you, and anyone else confused by what that said, essentially that last paragraph is saying that you better not disobey your end of the blood contract, or this thing can and will kill you.

Also mark: “how does she get to school?”
Me, who lives in the country: “i can’t think of anything funny to say, so im just gonna say I take the bus”

I know that the grandpa is probably some kind of evil creature and probably brainwashed her parents or something, but low-key he seems like a nice dude apart from that.
