    A lesson in why communication between your forces is so critical, today we discuss Operation Wikinger. A battle in which the Germans managed to lose horribly when no enemy forces were even present.

      you should cover the time a bunch of U-boats were deliberately bombed by a USAAAF B-17 while rescuing survivors from a sunken British cargo/passenger ship. they were flying a red-cross flag, had clearly identified themselves on radio and even had a deck full of survivors and lifeboats daisy-chained behind them. The US bomber saw and heard ALL THIS and attacked them anyway, dropped bombs right on the lifeboats. this was in 41/42 there is an excellent 2 part movie about it. the one time a bunch of u-boats including some Italian ones put themselves at great risk to save lives and they got bombed by the US. TYPICAL.

      in the interwar period, he helped to form the freikorps, right wing paramilitary units that brutally put down communist activity, carried out massacres of suspected socialists, and assassinated leftists politicians with the backing of the military and Weimar government. he was part of the court that largely acquitted the men who tortured and murdered Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht. one soldier was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for attempted manslaughter and the commanding officer got 4 months for failing to report a corpse.
      similar to Rommel, Canaris admired Hitler and believed that authoritarian dictatorship was the best form of government. he participated in the failed Kapp Putsch to overthrow the republic in 1920. Canaris was also known to give lectures on Nazism to the crew of his ship. he was very much into the nationalism, militarism, racism, and antisemitism of the Nazi party. it was Canaris who suggested that jews should be branded by a star of david.
      however, he did bravely take measures to oppose the regime. despite his militant nationalism and desire to see Germany become a great power, he was strongly opposed to war. as early as 1938 during the Sudetenland Crisis he was prepared to overthrow Hitler to avoid the outbreak of another great war. the sight of Warsaw in flames and the war crimes being committed against Poles drove him to tears. he tried to protest but was told by Field Marshal Keitel that this was exactly what Hitler wanted. he tried again to complain about the treatment of soviet prisoners, but was told by Keitel that he needed to stop thinking about the situation as a chivalrous battle and start thinking of it as the eradication of Marxist ideology. Canaris sabotaged efforts to get Francoist Spain in the war and dissuaded them from participating in a plan to take British Gibraltar. he passed on intelligence to british MI6 agents and helped jews to escape by training them as intelligence agents before giving them papers to escape Germany.

    Agree this was a huge screwup; assigning it some sort of superlative certainly seems appropriate!
    But wouldn't it be more accurate to say that Operation Barbarossa was Germany's Biggest Failure of WW2? No one knows what would have happened had Germany not instigated war with the Soviet Union, so maybe things would still have turned out badly. But we do know that their strategic assessment of their prospects to achieve their goals with respect to USSR ("kick in the front door and cause the whole rotten establishment to collapse" or something along those lines) certainly did not turn out as planned.
    Making an operational error in a 5 ship sortie into the North Sea and losing two ships and 500 crew is costly.
    Making an enormous strategic blunder into the East and losing millions of personnel, and pretty much everything else is priceless!

    • @krixpop
      @krixpop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      indeed,
      At Eknomus in 256 BC, the largest Sea battle in Human history (up and till today) a "massive" displacement was "some" kg above 50 Tones .
      700 ships took part in that Ancient battle, on both sides, in which Quinqueremes being the largest (50 to 55 T displacement)
      However the amount of forces involved, about three hundred thousands all together, and the total causalities of 50 ships sunk, 60 captured, and more than 30 thousands dead (20k captured) , makes Eknomus the absolute largest Sea battle ever ...
      And that with (approx.) 50 T displacement per ship and a total displacement of all ships involved: about 30k Tones...

MAJ Henry Elrod dropped his two 100 pound bombs on the destroyer HIJMS Kisaragi. They could have ben expected to inflict some, but not serious, damage, but one hit the fantail, detonating the tin can's store of depth charges. Kisaragi instantly went from being a destroyer to being destroyed, period

    A very good reason Germany would never be a sea power. Lack of coordination (rather competition) between Navy and Air Forces. They suffered the results of a bad theory. That competition was better than cooperation and that racism and fascism was better than democracy, and a free market, where people work together for a common goal.
    Friendly fire is not friendly. (From the book Shooting Blanks).

      @@GNMi79 : Agreed, although the US Govt worked with companies to cooperate with each other by designing factories and tanks and such that used similar parts, wheels, tires, gun calibers. Experts cooperated with each other across companies, there was openness to change and improvement. Same items often made by several manufacturers, and people put in long hours. Democracy and free enterprise in action. Typewriter companies making guns for instance.
