Great work as always man. Ive built quite a few spiral staircases and it was really interesting to see someone else do it. I like how you made the eyelits instead of stacking a colar up the center column. I used to cut colars and put a set screw in them. The treads were cut and reinforced after being bent/broke. Hand rail was the worst part. Had a fancy machine for rolling but that was only on a single plain. So i would eye ball it as it came out of the dies and pull it to make the helix. Keep up the great work.

Many years ago I made one of these stair cases for an underground pumping station. Before computers ! Lots of layouts! Made from steel and aluminum. Cut everything by hand. Bending the steel pipe handrail and installing it was a HUGE headache. Didn’t have a pipe roller, only a torch. Once was enough.
And for a beautiful, under the radar move... @t=5:08 -- Like a rock drummer flipping his sticks while playing... Mr. Brewer removes the vise grip clamp, then rotates/flips it, before again setting the clamp in place..... Just fun artistry. I like it.
Serious tool envy for that cutting machine, even though I do nothing that would justify owning such a machine. I'm assuming you put the treads on the centre pole before attaching the kickboards for a particular reason? Anyone else I would assume it was so that if they warped in the welding, that wouldn't stop them fitting together - but you don't seem to have problems with stuff warping out of shape.
Lewis Renovation yes, every three steps were perpendicular to each other. So if I held one tread level with the jackstand then all I had to do was plumb the other tread. Thanks for watching!
Very cool use of the plasma cutter. Love your videos. JD, in my area people charge about $60 CAD/hr (about $50/us) for basic CNC Plasma work and include design time with it. Waterjets are pretty much overbooked till the end of time because of auto industry boom. Does this sound about normal? I am trying to weigh the cost of PLASMA purchase VS outsource for now. In other words, can I make enough on side work to pay for the plasma or put the $10K into something more profitable in the short run? Thanks for the videos!
John Adams plasma has a much faster turnaround.... on ROI as well as project turnaround... unless the majority of your cutting need are thick I'd stick with a plasma. Thanks for watching

Great build! A couple of questions; which make and model is your plasma cam? It is cutting a very clean cut, how do you have it dialed in? The notch cutter I have not seen before is it shop made? Thanks
JC S thank you.... it's a plasmacam dhc2 4x4 running a hypertherm powermax65. I believe the key to good plasma cuts, is clean dry air.... and the tubing notcher is a westward fab, but it's modeled after the JD2 squared tubing notcher.
A thing of beauty, JD. What were your using to power the tubing roller? Have you seen diamond cut better from the diamond side? I usually cut it from the flat side, but I'm not using a plasmacam.

Stephen Dumaine no plans, completely to the customers needs... and I'm pretty sure it not to any code. The customer kinda set the price by all the restrictions upfront. This was a pretty "bare bones" build and it's mainly just for fun not the only way to reach both levels. But just like any custom job sometimes you make good money and sometimes poor money... but still made money.... I don't really have a good answer for the price.
each step was a 30* pie slice right? and did i count 15 steps? what was your rise? run? how was foot clearance? head clearance? was it easy/comfortable to use? sorry for so many Q's!

i am happy that you have the plasma cam but this way to builds leaves 99.7 % of us out
this can be done with a torch or plasma free hand. add in a sander and grinder and youre good to go.

Nice job JD. How far do you rotate the treads to get their placement? Never built a spiral stair and have always wonder about that. Thx
jimgam730 turned out to be easy... each stair was 30°... so after 3 steps every third step was 90° perpendicular to each other

idriwzrd plasmacam had height control so it's a breeze for diamond plate. I was using a rigid 300 pipe threader to power the tubing roller

Honestly it was super choppy and not really smooth..... it's a lot of smaller pieces that could be bent
