Folks may find other interpretations of WCS basics out there, but in my very humble opinion Brian and Miss Megan demonstrate the basic forms you will find in practice all across the USA and abroad. And, this includes - what you will experience in those big WCS weekend special events (national and international) that include competitions and instruction by some of the country's / world's best WCS instructors. In other words, learning these basics will put you "in step" with main-stream WCS no matter where you are or where you go. Nail these basics - and you will have a stable foundation to build your WCS on.
OMG ... I just dropped in (after 1 year of "interested") to a WCS class here in Athens, GA ... I am coordinated and can dance (in a bar)... HOLY Horse-in-a-bathtub .. I was so embarrassed. Deer in the headlights!! As if I didn't hear ANYTHING the instructors said!! .. I mean they were great, patient, fun and the group was great! ... But damn! ... They taught EXACTLY what you just did. I wish I had watched THIS video b4 Class .... anyway - YOU are SO helping me fill in the blanks. Subscribed and THX U!!! David.
We took our 1st class last night here in Carson City! Oh my gosh Y'ALL ARE FANTASTIC!!! We both LOVE the way you teach!! SUBSCRIBED!!! Grateful and blessed for you both ... as well as your choosing to share your knowledge 💯🙌🪄🤗
That is awesome! Hope you find lots of awesome things on our channel. We have a lot of resources on our site that can be helpful too.www.westcoastswingonline.com/resources/
thank you so much for this rich resource! I want to learn west coast swing, but I am slow to connect new movements (visual/auditory cues) into what my body does (interoception/proprioception), so I need a lot more practice than the average person. I went a live beginner class and felt overwhelmed. This lets me get all the extra practice I need on my own, at my own pace, with all the repetition that my unique system needs!
My friend this is called disco dancing, dating back to the mid 70's. Actually it was originally called the New York Hustle. It truly took off first in the major east cities of the US. New York, Miami, Atlanta then expanded to the west coast mainly California and eventually every where by the end of the 70s. Just keeping the record straight. Great instructional video thou. Keep on dancing !
Hey there, Thanks for the kind words. West Coast Swing did not originate out of Hustle though. It's roots come from Lindy Hop long before the Disco craze. You can learn more from my interview with dance historian Forrest Outman: th-cam.com/video/l8itxUb_BtU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IjCEjw2uDQ1RIeLM It's pretty interesting! -Brian
I love your videos, they're super-instructive and break things down really clearly. I'm usually a follower but due to the constant imbalance of leaders to followers have been wanting to try and learn the leaders footwork for the basic WCS steps. This video has been brilliant. Might be a bit boring dancing with me as a lead for a while but am keen to get to the confident stage with these and can then try out more adventurous steps. Thank you both. xx
I love your videos. There's no WCS class in my country. I'm a line dancer and together with my latin dancer friend, we start learning WCS. I couldn't enjoy learning it back then, but turns out that WCS is cool 😊❤
If you are new you want to do all steps of the basics so you understand the foundation of the dance. If you have learned different foot placement or a cross instead of together that is fine. So no you don’t have to mirror exactly what we do, but I would make sure you do all your steps and counts.

Yes!! Such great advice! Fundamentals are pretty important, then you can get more flexible from there.

That is great! It will get more natural the more practice you get!

Thanks, these videos are great. I'm as uncoordinated as they come and still improved a little after watching your video.
That is great! I'm really glad we could help.

do I have to mirror this video? or do I do exactly as they do?

I don't think it's mirrored since the lead's left is the same as mine :)
