  • Simon is seen here demonstrating how to professionally remove white ring or heat marks from a piano top.
Please DO NOT attempt to do this at home. It is VERY easy to burn the furniture and set light to yourself at the same time.
    You have been warned!
As you can see in this video, this method can be a very effective way of removing ring marks from a damaged polished finish. I must reiterate that it doesn't always work.
I'm using white polishing oil to act as a solvent barrier between the methylated spirit and the polished surface.
Using cotton wool to apply a thin layer of meths over the surface I quickly light it, pause for a few seconds, keeping a very watchful eye on the surface then either blow out the flame if I feel its been burning to long or allow the flame to die naturally.
Please note this technique will not always work...
If the finish is flaky and damaged It will not work.
If the white mark is almost solid white and dense in ts appearance it is unlikely to work
If the ring marks are dark in colour or black it will definitely not work.
If the white marks have been in the polish for many months or years it is unlikey to be as effective.
Methylated spirit is the solvent of french polish
I have watched quite a few video presentations on TH-cam describing how the flame burns the surface and this in turn partially melts the polish to magically remove the white marks. This the way to do it.. Please don't do this.

David Clair here, I have removed blushing from hundred if not thousands of table tops in my career and I have never seen this method. Very cool, Thanks for the share!

      Hi David.
      Thank you.
It was taught to me as an apprentice. Like you, I've done this hundreds of times.
It's the only way I knew until recent times.
You have to be very careful not to burn the surface but it does work. Using mineral oil on the surface helps prevent any heat damage.
This video is a little old now. I think we should do a more updated version. Have you been using the warm iron and tea towel technique?
      kind regards
      Simon

I did this at home and did not set fire to anything other than the 50p size area of meths. I kept the meths bottle far away. It works. Thank you. Three applications and I now have brilliant old piece of furniture.

Crumbs, that's an elaborate method! I just use an electric iron set to low on a tea towel to draw the water out and then polish afterwards to reseal.

OMG! I've watched so many videos on how to do this and tried them all and nothing worked. I just read this and used an iron and a cloth and Bam! Cant believe how easy that was and you are the first person who I've heard this from. Thank you!!! PS - FYI for others: The stain had been there for about a year and it did take about 10 minutes of "ironing" with some pressure.

This is the way it was done before the invention of the hairdryer and the heat gun. Remember to keep moving the hairdryer over the top. Just do not keep it on the same spot all the time. Works like a charm and without any risk of burning yourself or the house down.

These white water stains remain for years. Will the water not have evaporated during that time?
