    I like that, “throw it away and don’t let that stress you” … YES! One of my light pink gaura is not looking very alive this season. I’m guessing a garden critter chewed up the roots from beneath. Today is its last day in the flowerbed. And I’ll have a new vacancy for something else that needs to get in the ground. Gardening is an ever evolving opportunity.

      I ripped out my pink gaura yesterday...it was constantly getting infected with aphids, I spent more money and time trying to get rid of them then I paid for the plant so out it went..

    Gardening is so funny. I had 2 huge Hydrangeas that always got black leaf, I did everything Jim said to do but still black leaf. I took a chainsaw and cut those suckers down to the ground, yea I’m finished with those. They grew back to 6 feet tall the next summer and bloomed like crazy! With no black leaf! Hey don’t mess with me! 😜

    There are seasons of gardener’s life like there are seasons to a plant’s life. I grew up on a farm harvesting tobacco, mowing grass, picking, shucking, and shelling in my parents’ garden. You pick farm places hold no appeal for me. I’m glad to buy local farm produce already picked. I totally understand why you would not want to do a ton of propagating. That time is past.

    Hi Jim, I’m stumped by my rhododendrons. I’m in zone 7B, Atlanta. I planted Southgate rhododendrons on a north facing foundation 2 springs ago. Having come directly from the nursery, the bloomed perfectly. However, only a couple actually bloomed since, and even those were a half hearted show. They are all adding new growth and look healthy and full. They are mostly out of the light, so that’s my assumption as to the problem. But one of the shrubs does get about 2-3 hours of direct sun each day in the summer and that is not the one that blooms.

    In a container refresh video, you were mixing pine mulch with compost to make potting mix to replacing peat. I would be interesting in knowing more about the differences in peat and pine mulch. I have a good source of pine fines in my zone 8a garden and would like to use less peat. I appreciate that you show how to get a nice yard with less money with perennials and shrubs!! Not just trays and trays of annuals!! I like a few annuals but I did enjoy growing a lot from seed last year and they were as nice as what is available at the big box stores!!

    I bought two cercis online, a "Flamethrower" and a weeping red form. Both were about 6 feet tall and seemed pretty healthy when they arrived. Each was planted in a different part of the garden. This spring the plants were both dead about half way up. It's not a question of the scion dying as the plants are alive well above the graft. The lower parts that are alive are quite vigorous. Would it make sense to cut off the dead upper trunk and try to train a top, living branch to be the new leader? Live with an odd shaped tree or give up and replace them? It seems odd that both trees, different cultivars planted in different parts of the garden, are damaged in the same way. Thanks again -- your videos are so full of useful information, garden wisdom and inspiration.

    I had noticed that the sun felt more intense this winter & now trusted sources report an increase in UVC & some X-ray detected at ground level. I'm very careful with any spray but notice damage from Neem spray even with usual protections. We're very dry in N. Georgia too. I'm on a deep well but hope I don't have to keep watering like I've been. I like to use old hoses to make custom drip lines, I can put holes wherever I want the water & get another use out of a hose past it's prime.
    Had to laugh, I had to make some cuttings from my prunings though I only did a few.
    Thanks for another lovely Sunday chat Jim, Steph & Holly!

    Gaura needs a systemic to get rid of the aphids. THEN keep a close eye on it and spray it with an organic frequently.

    • @katiekane5247
      @katiekane5247 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with systemics is that anything that feeds on it is also affected. Bees & butterflies are poisoned from feeding on those plants. I wouldn't use them on anything flowering.

    I bought a helichrysum plant online. I try to quarantine new plants, but I ran out of room. I noticed gnats. I do make sure to put a plastic saucer under each new plant. I moved the plant off of the saucer, but changed my mind half an hour later. There were tiny white larvae under the plant after I moved it back to the saucer.
    Should I soak it in an insecticidal bath? All of this was inside because it has been so wet outside. I have only had the plant for 18 days in a south facing window. Zone 6b VA.

    Hi Jim - what growing zone do you find is the cutoff between ‘best time to plant is spring’ and ‘best time to plant is fall’? I’m in 6A and planted hundreds of plants in the fall, and lost quite a few of the smaller perennials over the winter. Wondering if I should start planning the bulk of my new planting in the spring, and challenge the passed down wisdom that fall is the best time.

    Pink Muhly Grass looks bad in the nursery and it is expensive. 19.99 for what looks like a few strands of grass and 34.99 for a 3 gallon that also doesn't look great. If this grass is native to zone 7 why is it so expensive? And, I am not familiar with grasses, but, do they look bad before you put them in the ground and then improve? Question: We just had numerous plants and a walkway installed, and one plant type put in was August Beauty Gardenia. Before I started watching your channel, I had asked how much I should water all these plants and the lead worker on the job told me to water three times a day for two weeks. I was doing that, and my gardenias have started looking terrible. I stopped the 3 times a day watering a week ago when I found out from your channel that most of the plants prefer not to be drowned. Two weeks into the planting, the gardenias have developed yellow leaves and have been droopy and one of the three gardenias hasn’t even opened the buds on it. I believe maybe I am dealing with root rot. What are your thoughts about using hydrogen peroxide to save these gardenias from root rot?

    Hi Jim thanks so much for answering all our questions!
    I have a serviceberry that was planted on the north side of my house (northern climate) almost two years ago. It is reaching pretty drastically due to the shade and has a significantly bent whip because of this. I tried staking it several times but the tree won out.
    With its age and very bent appearance, would it be worth a shot transplanting it in the fall to the south side of my house and trying to reverse the bend or it is most likely going to stay like that and should I just move on? If I should give it a try, any tips would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Question - I want to till a part of my backyard; to improve the soil for planting the way you have shown in videos. But it seems back in 20006, my builder put grass (or sod) in using a plastic mesh. I am concerned that the plastic will get caught up in the tiller. I saw that happen with a landscaper a few years ago, and it almost wrecked his tiller. He kept having to pull the plastic out and start again. The area I want to till is small - probably no more than 25 or 30 sq. ft. Do you think I am going to have to til the area by hand with a pick axe? It is pure hard clay here in Chapel Hill, NC; and I am an old lady. Thanks.

      The people who bought my parents old house had all of the sod removed and used chemicals on the soil to kill whatever was left behind. The rest of the neighborhood had centipede back then so that's what the new owners went with. That was 10 years ago. I rode through that neighborhood recently and our old house plus three houses to the left and right have bermuda lawns. Looks like the old man left his mark on the neighborhood. I'm not sure that you can kill it...

    So third time hopefully is a charm. I would like to have a grafted fruit tree and when doing research I’m getting conflicting opinions. I’m in zone 7b. Some say you can grow these trees in 7b and some say the weather is to harsh. Also, I’m wondering what you think about making an espalier from a pear or peach tree, or any fruit tree that would work here. I would so love one of these trees but don’t want to waste the money or time if it won’t work. This is my third time asking this question, please help. Thanks, Joanne

    • @staciejackson7497
      @staciejackson7497 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, just offering my own experience here -not trying to answer for Jim. Espaliering trees offers an alternative decorative and/or space saving way to grow fruit trees. The nursery that you’re acquiring them from should have the knowledge on which individual trees they are selling are well-suited for this treatment and your climate.

    • @anitahadley2871
      @anitahadley2871 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is your concern about it being grafted or just a specific fruit tree? Lots of grafted fruited trees are suitable for growing in 7b. I’m in GA 7b and peaches and pears are grown here, we are the peach state. I don’t see why growing an espalier would be any different as long as the location is good.

    • @jmcaulay577
      @jmcaulay577 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anitahadley2871 Hi, thanks for the answer, I was told by one nursery that they do not sell fruit trees in zone 7b, North Carolina as it does not favor fruit trees and the heat, rain and bugs prevent the tree from yielding proper fruit. They also told me that it does not get cold enough in the winter to kill bugs and keep the tree happy. I was inquiring about the grafted apple tree which can produce 4 or 5 different kinds of apples. The espalier tree would be an experiment on my part with a pear or peach tree to see if I could get the branches to grow in the right direction and yield nice fruit. Another nursery told me that fruit trees can grow but take a lot of maintenance and can acquire a lot of bugs and spraying to keep,them in check. I was curious as to what Jim’s opinion was. I’m not sure if I’m experienced enough, I’m just worried, as I do worry, it won’t work. Thanks, Joanne

    I hope you can answer my question about growing plants from the seeds of hybrids. I grew a lovely hedge of 'Vanilla Ice' Sunflowers last year (helianthus debilis). I collected some seeds to plant again and it also has reseeded itself naturally. Can I expect the same-looking creamy-yellow bushy sunflower? I guess it's a hybrid, although it didn't say so on the packet, so maybe not? Same thing with Zinnia 'Envy'. I collected the seeds, but maybe I'm better off buying new ones each year if I want that exact plant. What's your experience- and how do you tell which plant seeds stay true and which don't?

    I planted some alliums 2 years ago and flowered last year but nothing came up this year . Foliage did die back on its own and plenty if sunlight in the flower bed . Any reason why ? Will it come back next year ? I bought more allium bulbs last fall and planted them in a different bed and everything flowered this spring . I am afraid this will happen again for my new alliums

    I have a Golden Oakland Holly that I put in a container last fall. My plan was to put it in the ground along my back fence line. There is, literally, only one spot where I can put it and it will have room to grow to its mature dimensions. However, when I dug the hole for it this morning I found way too many large roots from a nearby maple tree that i didn’t want to cut. I was thinking of maybe building a slightly raised bed for it so that it can get established and the roots will eventually work their way down around the maple tree roots. Will that work or will the roots push out against the bed wall?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would work, but you would watering it daily for a long time. A root slayer shovel will cut those roots and it won't really harm the tree unless your digging tons of holes

    Great video! I had a loropetalum that I mistakenly planted in late fall zone 8a that has looked pitiful since I planted it, so I just dug it out and replaced it, and the original pot shape with no additional roots popped right out of the ground. Do you think I dug it out too early?

    Hi Jim ,
    My Brazilian grape tree (Jaboticaba) lost all of its leaves this winter. It in a container and still alive but very slow recovery.
    Should I keep it in full sun or part shade until it gets its leaves back and should I let it dry out a little or keep it wet ?
    I has a shedding bark like a crape myrtle so I don’t think the sun will burn it too bad , I’m also in a zone 6b so our summer is not too intense.
    Any suggestions on a good potting soil would be appreciated, some people grow them in straight peat moss with very little perlite, but they also live in Florida . It would take a very long time to dry out with that kind of mix when it starts getting cold where I live.
    Thanks

    We planted some small (8-10 ft) trees in zone 6b and want to plant groundcover around them to discourage weeds (and zoysia grass creeping into the mulch). The trees don't provide much shade yet, so how should we think about picking plants to put around them? I worry sun-loving plants will be in too much shade after a few years as the trees get bigger, but shade plants would be in too much sun right now. Are there options that can work long-term, or should we just plan to move things around as conditions change?

I extended my garden bed last Fall and this new bed has this grass already there and it keeps coming up even though I keep pulling it out, and I just learned that it is the worst thing for me to do. Im in zone7b. Any recommendations for me to keep it from coming back, from your experience?

    I have a Japanese maple (acer shirasawanum Autumn Moon, about 4 years old) in an entry way area that needs some shaping. I didn’t get to it in winter and understand spring is not a good time to prune it. Can I do it in summer or should I wait until next winter? It gets direct sun until early afternoon, then is shaded the rest of the day. It is protected from wind by the house. PNW zone 8b.

    Jim, thank you for your videos. My beautiful glads have thrips. I jerked a bunch of them out. Is there any hope to control them or should I dispose of all glads? Also, I have asiatic lilies in the same raised box. Will the thrips affect them? Can I treat the soil for eggs or do I need to get rid of it? And if I have to get rid of it, how do you get rid of soil? I contacted my extension office, but they have not responded. Thank you for your help!!

    Jim, I have a newly planted Sky Pencil which is putting up suckers about 4 inches away from the base of the plant. At least I think they are suckers! Although they are very small , the leaves seem to be similar. Is this normal? I have never grown ilex before and wondering if this is the way they fill out.

    Nashville, TN, zone 7a. I have newly planted Little Poncho Dogwood that appears to be budded up, but has not leafed out yet. It gets 4 to 5 hours of afternoon sun each day. Thoughts on when I should expect it to begin leafing our in my area? Perhaps I got a dud, and it is actually dead? How to tell if it’s still alive? Thanks for all your help. Big fan!

    Can you recommend an evergreen foundation shrub for zone 6 (TN) that will thrive in shade with a couple of hours of overhead sun? The foundation line runs north-south with a large tree out front. I live in a hollow with a large hill to the east and a large hill to the west so I get a few hours of direct sun mid-day, rest of the time is deep to filtered shade except for the south end of the house which gets more sun. Sounds complicated and it is! LOL

      Good morning, I re-landscaped the front foundation of my house last fall. (east/ west foundation line) All day shade across the back portion of the bed. I used spiderweb fatsia, soft caress mahonia along the back of the bed and, across the front of the bed, sunshine ligustrum. I bought smaller plants to save money. The fatsia and mahonia were not easy to find in my area and were more costly than the ligustrum. All of the plants look fantastic and the fatsia and ligustrum have doubled in size. I don't have irrigation in this bed, so I mulched it well with pine straw and watered once per week at first. I live in Southport, NC, so it is warm, humid and mild winter.
