    There is a place in Kansas City named Pop Culture which had a real piece of work running the store. He would always yell at kids who touched stuff. I remember one day I went there and it was the first appearance of anti-venom. So I was looking at the copies trying to get the best one because all the copies were not in the greatest condition, and I guess I was taking too long...the next thing I know he came over and grabbed the whole stack off the shelf from in front of me. I was like wtf??? I put the word out and quit going after that. He was just a bitter old ass who didn't need to be anywhere near the hobby. Another time before that I bought a few Neal Adams Detective comics including a #400. When I went to pay he says, "Enjoy them while you can." in a subversive nasty tone. What a POS.

    sorry to hear you had a bad experience. My worst was going to the store I had my comic file at on the day Captain America #25 was released. I was ordering Cap at the time and the recent news about his "death" was creating interest in the book. I went in to purchase my file order, the Cap 25 was not there BUT they had a copy hanging on the wall behind the till at $100.00. I told them I would buy the copy hanging on the wall since it should have been in my file and got a bunch of attitude when I said I would pay cover price. Closed my file, as did the guy behind me who also didn't get his copy of the book.

    I'm amazed how some of these shops treat their inventory. Half full long boxes means most of those books arent worth the purchase. Cracked and broken spines, white creases along the spine, books literally folded. Just reader copies. They don't care enough to inspect the boxes. Also, isn't the point of the plastic graded boxes is to protectect the comic?

  • @epb7284
    @epb7284 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    , I'm sorry to hear that that happened to you both. I've been in a comic shop like that. One of my old LCS' was sold to someone else (I never knew, nor felt a connection with the new owner)and it seemed like the shop was open mostly open for their friends to hang out and game (which is cool, but I felt kind of unwelcome, or a burden when I'd want to look at something behind the counter for instance) I didn't return much after that. I think they finally went out of business. A place that treats their patrons like that can't last and how does that look to the comic community and those of like interests?

    This is the fourth video I've watched today with people explaining how the comic book store workers we're playing video games and not interacting with customers positively. Really sad stuff

  • @michaelwalsh6344
    @michaelwalsh6344 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Truth is that if it was the owners' young son and his two friends playing video games then they did indeed NOT want you to be there because they didn't want to do any "work" even if all that would be was to say hello to a customer and possibly ring-up their sale at the cash register. Most kids don't know or appreciate where their parents' money comes from as long as it comes.. it is ironic that one day it will stop coming because of his very actions in the past

  • @Outlawdave71
    @Outlawdave71 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You did nothing wrong, as a small comic/game store owner in a small town, I can say with some athority we need all the customers we can get. When you walk into my store someone will welcome you with a smile and offer to help you find something. Even if we are in a game we stop, you have priority as a shopping customer. I dont have any super keys but what I do have I want to sell, these books aren't like the magic and pokemon, flying off the shelves like like leaves in a tornado (really what lets my store stay alive) so I want anyone interested to see what I've got, it may be the key they are missing! Just my 2 cents.

    My worst comic shop experience was on a Free Comic book Day oh, this, shop had artists and writers signing stuff at his shop, long story short I got a sketch from an artist he told me to wait till the end of the day to do it so I did not hold up the lines, so near the end of the day I came back was getting my sketch it took a while about 45 minutes, I paid the artist and my friend and his son came with me his son was getting some comics signed so I got in line with his son to talk with him while he was getting his comic signed , the owner came out like 10 minutes later while we're still in line and told me he wanted to talk to me I got out of the line went outside and there he started yelling at me saying I was taking advantage that i was already in line before, I explained to him what went on he then proceeded to get his employees to come over and asked them if I do this evey year and the all said that I do this every year I told him that I never have got anything signed or met any of artists or writers in the past he proceeded to get more angry and kick me out and told me never to come back which is fine because I don't want to give businesses 2 someone that's going to act like that because it's not all right to treat customers that way

    Although I quit collecting comics some 25+ years ago, I used to hate boxes that were underfilled or overstuffed. Although I like cats well enough, I'm allergic to them and one store hat cat fur all over the back issues. Another pet peeve is when I would drive to a store, and they were late opening up. Some were run well and some weren't. Also, the comics should be priced. I've heard stories about stores wanting to price the comics after you bring them to the counter or want to change the price.

      That behavior Wrath described is very unprofessional.
      Unprofessionalism and lack of good business sense was killing comic shops LONG before the Internet and anything like Amazon marketplace was a significant factor!
      I can count on less than one hand the number of comic shops I ever felt welcome in! A lot of shops are managed and run by people who are anti-social and HATE their customers. It's a reality with comic shops. Comic Guy is a stereotype that holds up in many comic book stores!
      I stopped going to comic shops over 12 years ago because I just got fed up with the overall low quality of monthly product and the feeling that I wasn't welcome in the store. I have since collected things again but only in trade and in hardcover. The vast majority of the time I will not pay cover price because it's too expensive and there's really no reason to pay MSRP for most of this stuff -- it's not worth it, and in the vast majority of cases never will be!
      A lot of the BS I saw being done in comic book shops is being repeated at places like Half-Price Books. They WILL gouge if they can get away with it and people aren't knowledgeable. They criminally underpay for most things already. DO NOT SELL your comic book collections to HPB because they will take advantage of you!

    I'm not into funko pops (though it looks like you scored) but that CGC book for $60 was a nice pick up and the grade made it a solid bargain. As for the rude boy, I would have arranged with the owner to go back for the Avengers book while Dad and his son are there. You can make it a teachable moment in customer service and displaying books for the son. On top of that you might get a slightly better deal on the Avengers book for the attitude and embarrass the son at the same time. A win, win situation, IMO.

    Shocking the store personal blew a $200 sell over a misunderstanding. Btw, the best approach to thumb through a very tight comic bin is to remove the first ten comics and gently place it aside. That avoids bending comics and more importantly keeping the bin in order.

    For that individual not greeting customers when they walk in to a store with no regard and sincere respect to acknowledge your presence is very unprofessional and especially if a worker a store raises his tone of voice towards your wife is very uncalled for and disrespectful.
    Sorry you and your family had to experience something like that which is unfortunate and as you mentioned the bad vibe that probably had made you feel some sort of way trying to enjoy a nice day out to have fun at a comicbook shop, all because of that worker there being so unprofessional and disrespectful.
    Happy you two left on a good note to where nothing else coukd have happened after that ordeal. They have lost two potential customers and hope that the owner of the comicbook shop realizes not to employ them there anymore because it's business that they're tarnishing with their lack of understanding how to treat customers with respect.

    the worst comic shop experience I had was with a comic shop in Manila Philippines called Comic Quest, the owner was a ahole who tried to pressure me into buying ore comics which I did not want. also he sells comics as jacked up prices due to privellage of buying from him.

      @@whynotcomics3291 yep horrible this owner had a lot of ego, despite his attitude, many were still buying from him, if you were loyal to him he treated you good even though selling you comics at jacked up prices, however if you deviated and bought comics from another seller, you were treated like dirt.

    another one was in Vancouver , BC Canada, in the late 90s, at the ABC Comic book emporium in Granville street, one of hte best comic used book store shops in Vancouver and I still go there since the owner is sort of a buddy of mine, they got this clerk who was a total aggressive prick, I almost had a brawl with him in the shop, later got fired for stealing money then died of liver failure a few years later.

    This is just coming from your side of the story. But if they were rude to me, I would not patronize them. Even if it is a desirable comics at a good price, you are not getting my money while treating me like a drag. The son is probably a brat - privileged kid because he can “work” while playing video game in the store.

    Can't speak for the shops you go to but i'td be good to keep in mind that a lot of shops are making dick on new stuff and old back issues and collections are where the comic money is coming from so they might be more high strung. The last 3 shops I was in no longer sells new issues if it's not on a reliable customer's pull list.
