This was my absolute favorite rendition as a kid and always will be. I just watched it last night, and it will never NOT make me smile! Martin Short is BEST Madhatter, and all the acting, sets, songs, lighting, costumes, and especially puppetry is just beyond amazing 💙💙💙
Indeed! I always found the Disney version a little boring but this one was just so enjoyable and I still sing the songs from the Mock Turtle and say "More Pepper!!!"
This is the version I remember growing up with, even though I had seen the 1951 Disney version (You don't forget an unbirthday after watching that) and I dream of the day I ride Disneyland's teacups. However, I absolutely loved Martin Short's humour as the Hatter and Whoopi as Cheshire. My mother and I recite the tea party scene and the cook's "More Pepper!" often on a day to day basis. 😆 I also love George Wendt (Norm to those who have seen or are old enough to have remember watching Cheers) and Robbie Coltrane as the Tweedles.
I have read the book versions of Alice in Wonderland and through the looking Glass before and I loved them, I also would want to read them again a whole lot more times too as well! I do love reading Alice in Wonderland in the books by Lewis Carroll as much as I also love Alice in Wonderland in movies and plays too!
I could watch 4 hours of behind-the-scenes footage of this film - it is simply amazing! Thank you so much for finding this and sharing it with us fans!
I've watched this version, on what seems like a continuous loop, since my Mum taped it on TV back in 1999. It's my absolute favourite version. Thank you for posting the behind the scenes!
Such BEAUTIFUL sets and props!! The behind the scenes footage of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is all green screens and nowhere NEAR as magical as this!
I grew up watching this as a child. I think it was recorded on TV. This was my favourite retelling on the story. I loved Gene Wilder as the Mock Turtle. Rest In Peace and Whoopi Goldberg was amazing.
@Nikki Price. Yes, she knows how to play a controlling and conniving character very well. "Jack's an idiot." "NO! Sentence first, verdict after." Which proves the lunacy.
Nikki Price (Ezekiel) Zeke Hamish Beckley: With a Queen of Hearts loud 100% voice that is so childish squeaky, sort of bitchy, high pitched like a steam tea Kettle or a raccoon chipmunk sounding type train whistle it's just so damn amazing how someone like Miranda Jane Richardson can play as this role. And she well and truly nails the entire role down to a tee. 7:10
Yes, for years when my kids were growing up, "Off with their heads" was a favorite saying 😂😂 in our house. Martin Short was excellent as the Mad Hatter. Absolutely well done folks 👏👏👍🏻
Christopher Smith As well as Gene Bergman from 'Something Wilder', Descendant of Victor Frankenstein---Doctor Fredrick Frankenstein *"Frodrick Frokensteen"* Sherluck Holmes Sherlock Holmes's Smarter Brother, Leo Bloom from the Producers and of course Jim 'the Waco Kid' from 'Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles'!
Omg i knew it was him :O I remembered i was watching the chocolate factory, and i was like where did i see that guy before? It was Alice in wonderland! Thank God I remembered him!
I feel like this version is more closer to Walt Disney’s initial vision he had for his version of Wonderland considering in early versions he had characters like the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle, the White Knight and the Duchess, who weren’t of course in the final film. So watching this version, it’s kind of like seeing Walt’s original vision he had in mind for the story. It’s amazing how the screenwriters were able to find places to put those characters not present in the Disney version without the film feeling overcrowded. So they solved Walt’s problem he had when making his version 48 years prior.
This is by no means my preferred adaptation of alice, but it's fantastic to see this documentary. I had no idea this documentary existed and I have looked into rare versions! thanks for uploading!
The most loyal to the book plot and detail progress. At least to me. ^^ and the characters design is so similar to the original and first illustrations .
This is my favorite Alice in Wonderland version. It made me obsessed with wanting to go to England when I was a kid. This movie is so relaxing and I loved the scenery. I used to watch it over and over in the early 2000s when I was a little kid. I watch it occasionally now and it brings back so many childhood memories. The best Alice in Wonderland movie ever!! 🐰🐛🏑🫖🍄🐀👑♥️
Thank you for sharing this rare video! This is my favourite version of Alice and I always try to find some more infos about it like pictures from the set and videos like this. Do you have any other material of this movie? More pictures or videos? Thanks!
I own the book version that was released, which contains pictures from the movie, and I have a sticker set somewhere as well! Apart from that, everything I own can be found on the net. Glad you enjoyed the video :)
This is absolutely the best adaptation, and probably will remain so. The use of practical effects works so well and makes it all seem more real and tangible. Not trying to hate on the Tim Burton Alice, as I actually enjoy that one as well, but it just makes everything seem weightless and inconsequential when it's all cgi. Plus this adaptation is the closest to the book over all other major productions
Even because I love the 1999 Hallmark television film Adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, I also love the cast of actors and actresses who played the characters, like Martin Short as the Mad Hatter, Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat, Miranda Richardson as the Queen of Hearts, Christopher Lloyd as the White Knight and Gene Wilder as the Mock turtle! I just want to say that they all did such a great job with all those amazing acting performances they did! I do love this version, but I also love the Disney cartoon and the Tim Burton version with Johnny Depp too!
The level of care and artistry that was put onto this film is mindblowing. Just the cast alone my god. I remember watching this on television when it came out, and I was absolutely enthranced by it from minute one. I bought it on dvd a few years ago and rewatched it and it was even better than I remembered. Just a beautifullly made film, and by miles and far one of the best adaptations of Alice ever made
Man ive been looking for this! I remembered vividly memory of this movie that brought me so frightened and yet veryyyyyy interesting and weird. Im so glad that they won the award. Seriously i miss this movie. It left me a lot of memories Edited: tbh I really like this more than 2010 (latest version)
Watching this as an adult, I realize that Martin Short is the BEST Mad Hatter I’ve ever seen in any Alice adaptation. (Johnny Depp, eat your heart out). But in 1999, I tuned in to this special solely for Gene Wilder, my favorite actor of all time; may the cosmos rest his soul 😢 He was the definitive Mock Turtle.
I miss the days when movie sets had to actually be built and painted. These days the trees, the hedges, the card castle, everything, would be shitty soulless CGI.
This was Tina Majorino's and Whoopi Goldberg's second film. They did "Corrina, Corrina" in 1994. I was 2 years old at the time. I saw "Alice in Wonderland" when I was 6 years old.
Alice in Wonderland 1999 10/10-A brilliant TV movie that stays closely to both the books starring a wondrous set of characters like Sir Ben Kingsley as the Smoking Hookah Caterpillar although I wish he stuck closer to the story blue and tired looking instead of a freaking Major the other characters were pretty good too Whoopi Goldberg does a awesome performance as the Grinning Cheshire Cat I mean she's just so sly and cheeky, Martin Short as a crazy yet funny Mad Hatter talking in a ridiculous voice, Christopher Loyd as the clumsy White Knight and in my option one of the best Queen of Hearts Actresses ever Miranda Richardson sounding so high-pitched and also the Mock Turtle played by one of my all time favourite actors to this day the late great Gene Wilder. It's a wonderful Alice in Wonderland much better than the 2010 Tim Burton remake *HANDS DOWN!!!*
Besides the cartoon, this one’s my favorite & the Tim Burton one... maybe the manga.. (in a different setting..) the queen’s hair tho, i always swore she shaved her hair and replaced it using an eyebrow pencil.🤣 (a big one maybe)... well those eyebrows surely got an eyebrow pencil style. Will you want to join the dance is my favorite Alice song.
As a kid, I had seen many versions of Alice in Wonderland. But this 1999 film is by far the best version. Mainly because there are puppets that are very well controlled by puppeteers and very rarely animated with computers. When I think of the new version of Tim Burton, there is only computer animation where there is no love in it. That's why Burton should have stayed away from this book.
This was quite a visual feat in its day. For a television program I can't think of a more well crafted production. There was only a few in the 90's that matched this level of craftsmanship. Gullivers Travels with Ted Danson comes to mind. And another one about a family who sails on a magic ship to a fantasy land. It was a miniseries. It ends with the bones of a dragon being being found by trolls and flesh and sinew and skin suddenly come back to it and save the family from the barbaric trolls. But I don't remember its name. Anyways this production holds a special place in my childish heart.
Amo esta película pero no la encuentro, alguien por favor dígame dónde puedo encontrarla en español o por lo menos subtitulada, por favor por favor por favor🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This movie was so freaky to watch as a kid. The styles and levels of effects are totally inconsistent but that almost makes it a perfect adaptation. The cartoon was great too but it didn’t get nearly this weird
I grieve the fact Gene and Martin worked the same movie yet never shared a scene together. I know with all my heart they would have an audience in stitches. What a waste.

Jake.
A big thing that sold the performances is that the actors truly appeared to inhabit the characters and looked like they were genuinely having fun.
This was my absolute favorite rendition as a kid and always will be. I just watched it last night, and it will never NOT make me smile! Martin Short is BEST Madhatter, and all the acting, sets, songs, lighting, costumes, and especially puppetry is just beyond amazing 💙💙💙

Cat Arya D eeyyy me too! Will you won't you will you won't you join the dance!
It's got great writing and follows the book amazingly ~ the Queen is the best~!!
I also love George Wendt (Norm to those who have seen or are old enough to have remember watching Cheers) and Robbie Coltrane as the Tweedles.
Absolutely! Now that I have seen a few others, this is far and away my favorite.
I love this version of Alice in Wonderland. It's so underrated. Compared to the Disney version, this one is more accurate to the book.
Yes, I love the animated Disney movie too but this is definitely my favorite as a film that actually captures the book.
This version of alice is similar to the disney one though

The Best version of "Alice in Wonderland" ever. Absolutely.

This was the best Alice in Wonderland!!
Omg! “Doooooooooooo you plaaaaaaaaaaay croqueeeeeeeeeeeette?” Then fighting with the flamingo is triggering memories.
I grew up watching this as a child. I think it was recorded on TV. This was my favourite retelling on the story. I loved Gene Wilder as the Mock Turtle. Rest In Peace and Whoopi Goldberg was amazing.
My absolute favorite Alice in wonderland movie seems near perfect to the books
This is my all time favorite! I absolutely LOVE the Queen in this version. Miranda Richardson is amazing!
I like, the sound of that ~
@Nikki Price. Yes, she knows how to play a controlling and conniving character very well. "Jack's an idiot."
"NO! Sentence first, verdict after." Which proves the lunacy.
Nikki Price

Best version of Alice in Wonderland.
Martin Short as the Mad Hatter is brilliant.
What a crazy cast and amount of effort put into what is a TV movie. You rarely see this kind of production in TV, it's pretty amazing
R.I.P. Gene Wilder, A.K.A the Mock Turtle and Willy Wonka.
Christopher Smith
As well as Gene Bergman from 'Something Wilder', Descendant of Victor Frankenstein---Doctor Fredrick Frankenstein *"Frodrick Frokensteen"* Sherluck Holmes Sherlock Holmes's Smarter Brother, Leo Bloom from the Producers and of course Jim 'the Waco Kid' from 'Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles'!
Yeah I miss him too!
Omg i knew it was him :O I remembered i was watching the chocolate factory, and i was like where did i see that guy before? It was Alice in wonderland! Thank God I remembered him!
This movie was such a labour of love - and the effort and affection showed through magnificently!
FINALLY SOME BEHIND THE SCENES ABOUT THIS MOVIE
I could watch this movie over & over again, the best Alice ever!
I feel like this version is more closer to Walt Disney’s initial vision he had for his version of Wonderland considering in early versions he had characters like the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle, the White Knight and the Duchess, who weren’t of course in the final film. Extraordinary! I grew up on this version and the animated Disney classic!
The set design and puppetry are truly remarkable
I remember watching this on Hallmark when I was a kid. This made me so nostalgic
This is probably my favorite adaptation of Lewis Carol’s story ever made.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I've always wanted to see behind the scenes of this incredible film!
This is by no means my preferred adaptation of alice, but it's fantastic to see this documentary. I had no idea this documentary existed and I have looked into rare versions! thanks for uploading!

Thank you so much! I really love this version. This movie is my childhood memory! Pity that I can’t find the full version any more.
There's a dvd of this version of the movie being sold on Amazon, just in case you wanted to get it! :)
I have this on VHS! 😃
This movie was just perfect! Still my favourite Alice in Wonderland Movie. I use to watch it non stop when it came out in 99. Great cast too!!! ☺️
my gran used to have the cd of this and i’d watch it on repeat every time i visited her - it was my favourite
Bro this is such a childhood memory
I was the last girlfriend of actor Heathcote Williams, who starred in this movie, seeing this video moves me indescribably

Me 2.
I have watched this a few times, and it is undoubtedly the best presentation, either literary or visual, of Alice in Wonderland.

This is such a brilliant adaptation.
Beautiful and delightfully entertaining.
And what a cast. Tina Majorino is outstanding as Alice.
Truly fabulous an awsomeness for the utube to share this beauty
Thank you for on my bottom of my heart
I went and saw the play Alice in Wonderland last night. It was magical, but no where near this quality!

I still absolutely love this.
I found this doing my collage homework on Jurassic park could some one tell me we’re to find this version
Every source I found online says Martin short’s head was enlarged three times, not two.
I noticed that too, I wonder which is correct
the disney live action tim berton version disney has the magic to bring this story to life
Does anyone know where I can find the behind scenes for the magical legend of the leprechauns hallmark movie?
Does anyone happen to know if the house shown @9:08 is real? If so, do you know where it is?
Thank you!
So my friend and I were extras in this morning and she was the white rabbit
What were you?

I really like BTS's and I consider this version of AiW as teh by far best and most accurate.
