John Deere 318 50" deck hub bearing replacement repair

  • How to replace the bearings and spacers for a fraction of the cost of replacing the entire hub assembly on a 50" JD deck. Shortly after I replaced this one, the others started making noise and developed excessive play. You might as well replace all 3 while you have the deck apart.
    There's a kit to replace all 3, along with fresh blades and belt: amzn.to/3bZOik4

    Excellent video! You are a natural teacher and your videography is great. I now have confidence I can do this with my JD 318 mower deck. Thank you!!!

    Very good video, with good ideas. I'm currently working on a 265's deck spindles which are very similar. Gotta get two of the three pulleys off somehow first. No amount of pulling them works without ruining them.
    I've read you can put the whole thing in a vise and hammer down on the spindle, eventually forcing the pulley off as the spindle drops down ... but to me that seems like it would just flatten the bottom of the pulley. Such fun.

    Nice Job!
    Replacing the bearings in the double pulley of a 48" JD Deck on a GT275 this weekend so doing the pre game "TH-cam Information Crawl"..
    Glad I came across your video.
    Have done bearings before, but you never know what you can learn from others.
    The Freezer idea is pretty "cool" (pun fully intended) will have to give that a try.
    At 17:34 I say to myself, oh crap he is pushing the bearing out and does not realize it.
    At 17:50 you make the discovery and respond oh so accordingly. Classic.....
    It is always great to see others that still work on the things at the "detail" level themselves to get more life and value out of things vs. just buy a whole new part or pay someone else to do it!
    Save $$, Less Waste, Satisfaction In A Job Well Done with your own two hands!
    Keep up the good work!

    Cool. I replaced my carage bolts with stainless steel ones. My lawn tractor is the 430. Rare 50 inch deck for a that model.

      That's a good idea... one of the other bearings is starting to make noise, so I'll go the stainless bolt route next time.

    I've worked on my deck several times and each time I've tried to remove the bearing hub assemblies, the carriage bolts have just spun around without the nuts coming off. I've had to use a grinder to remove the head of the bolt to get the bolts out. This has happened twice and both times I was using an impact wrench to loosen the nuts. My advice is to clean the threads on the bolts and spray with penetrating oil before you try to take them off. Plus, use a ratchet wrench rather than an impact. I'll try to remember this the next time have have to remove one of the hub assemblies.

    Great job! There is a TH-cam channel of a guy who repairs enormous John Deere tractors (those monstrosities you see on huge farms). He replaced giant bearings...how did he do it? By putting them in the freezer ;)

    Use a large six inch "C" clamp to hold the blade put a rag to prevent blade damage while tightening or loosening. It's a lot safer than the block method or holding the blade by hand.d

    I have been going out of my mind trying to figure out what part numbers I need to replace all the bearings on my JD 180 48" deck. Since the JD dealers around me have all gone away in the last few years, I am pretty well screwed. Chatted with a dealer in Indiana who sent me what "SHOULD" be my deck. Not even close. I think somewhere along the line my deck was replaced and I can't find anything telling me what model mine is. Anyway, watching your video I see the same spindles that I have and it is the first I have seen them. Yours are cast iron with 3 bolts. Same as mine and the only ones I have seen that were not aluminum with 4 retainer bolts. So I am going to see if I can use your mower to find all my parts. Is there any chance you still have the bearing info on yours??

  • @FloridaDeere

    what was the part number for the spacer? do you still have that? Otherwise, excellent video, I will surely put this info to use.

      Hi, I believe the part for the spacer is M73515 or it could be M45121. (The first part # might have superseded the second.) Check out this link, it has measurements to compare dimensions to yours: globalpartszone.com/john-deere/m73515-1.html

    I am still wondering about the grease inside the hub. I just took all three of mine apart and they were filled with grease, but .... I don''t know.
    I think I will try to use my vice to push the spindle in. The less you pound on the bearing rolling elements, the less likely you are to damage them. But maybe the jaws don't open wide enough.
    Thanks for the video.

      Just to follow up, I found this in the service manual section on rebuilding mower deck spindles:
      "When assembling bearings and spacer, fill cavities 75 percent full of multipurpose grease."

  • @RobBrown99
    @RobBrown99 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the detail. At 19:50 you insert 3x bolts into the pulley mount. When you insert the mount back into the deck and attach the nuts, how do the nuts tighten? There's no head on the bolt to stop it spinning while the nut is tightened.
    Reason I'm asking - 3 of my bolts on my same model deck on the center pulley are loose and wonder if I can tighten easily without taking the pulley off. Thank you

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those bolts were carriage bolts, with the square behind the smooth head. The hole they went into was square shaped and holds the bolt in place while tightening. Great question, I should have mentioned that in the video.

    • @RobBrown99
      @RobBrown99 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, thanks for the response! I will inspect them on removal. Quite possible that if they spin while tightening someone put the wrong bolts in. Thanks for getting back to me.

    Always amazes me how much grease are in between the bearings sometimes, it's the same in the spindle. The bearings are sealed and no grease will get to the bearing no matter how much is pumped in there. Good job though.

    • @cwmaxfield2000
      @cwmaxfield2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. Those inner seals need to be removed. Its easy and to not do so all the grease in the world does the bearing no good. They are pre packed. Bout it.

  • @dougphelps6917
    @dougphelps6917 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You could have avoided the spacer replacement - just needed to punch through the spacer straight to the bearing - since you aren't reusing it anyway.

      @6thGearGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doug Phelps Thanks Doug. Less parts to replace. I did it that way when I replaced the other two units the following year.

    • @tcmits3699
      @tcmits3699 ปีที่แล้ว

      These spindles should be made like front wheel drive hub bearings. I welded a couple of helical beads
      on the outside of the inner sleeves to fling the grease to the upper open bearings while running

    do you happen to know the part # for your blades. I have tried numerous blades and cannot find a blade that will center on the hub. my old mower has a small bushing to center the blades but JD cant seem to find part numbers

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked and do not have any part numbers on the blades. I would think that's a common item for a dealership to sell. I would try checking with a different dealer.

    just wondering, why is there grease in housing for sealed bearings?

    • @6thGearGarage
      @6thGearGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure exactly why they put the grease in there, but my best guess is to prevent corrosion on the pin and inside of the housing over time from any moisture collected when washing the deck off with a hose.

    I had to replace all my bearing hubs today on my John Deer L130 because bad bearings wiped out hubs even tho they were greased om a regular basis. Went to John Deer and bought all three new hubs but I was very disappointed as these hub assemblies were made in China, I have dealed with China products before and bearings especially are junk, their metal is all weak and will rust if you stare at it--God we need some American made products in the stores again. Trump is the Man to make this Happen....
