    I had the honor as a high schooler of being at one of the final college concerts Duke did. I met Cootie Williams, Russell Procope and Harry Carney. Sadly within 6 months, so many in this great band had died...

    What a collection of talented players and Duke really knew how to use them! This is why they say his instrument was the orchestra.

    virtuoso ...all of them ..how music has fallen from these heights we'll never know!

      Sam Patterson I guess music has fallen from these heights because it's all about money and image these days as opposed to spirit and joy. What do you think?

      I'm sorry to tell you that you are right, but it takes the history of racism and its effects to know what really happened. Maybe reading the Miles Autobiography will give you a clue. It is about money & image, but it also became about what you could see instead of what you mainly could hear. In Asia and Europe their govt. supports the arts. But in America they didn't want to do it because black people created jazz. By the way whites also enhanced it, when you consider Zawinul, Evans, Mclaughlin, Ponty and so many more.

      It's because people don't play instruments anymore. Musical training is not something that most people can afford. The attainment of a skill on an instrument isn't valued as much as it used to be. Things and times have changed. Technology has advanced but our art is in abeyance.

      @@flame-sky7148 I concur entirely. Wynton Marsalis said in a interview their fault was being Black.
      In 1967, Coltrane described Jazz as "American classical music".

    • @flame-sky7148
      @flame-sky7148 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@isaackahn7188 Yep, that was one of Coltrane's last interviews with that Japanese man. In India their Carnatic music is called North Indian or South Indian Classical Music. Every country has it's own classical music JC. They just named black music some jizz or jazz (some derogatory name). When Miles Davis was playing music back in the 40's as a teenager, they just said, " we're going to play music". That's it, "jazz" is a white man's term. I wish forever that jazz was created by white men, then it would have gotten the recognition and the accolades it should have deserved. But blacks did it, and this country sort of swept their contributions under the rug so to speak. But what we do have is their records and video evidence of concerts along with their compositions. Thanks for technology.
